2010 Football Predictions – Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Texas Tech Red Raider Football program has taken some major strides in the past 3 seasons but the mad scientist known as Mike Leach is no longer the head football coach in Lubbock. Texas Tech finished 9-4 in the 2009 college football season capping it off with a 41-31 Alamo bowl win over Michigan State. New coach Tommy Tuberville is now leading the Red Raiders, a different type of coach than Leach. Tuberville prefers power running and a suffocating defense to the wide open style, Tuberville told Texas Tech that he would keep the spread offense, for how long nobody knows. The Red Raiders finished 7-5 against the spread, going over the total 5 times and under 7 times in 2009. The offense was one of the most productive in college football averaging over 470 yards in total offense which ranked 4th in all of college football, Texas Tech threw for over 386 yards per contest which ranked 2nd overall in the NCAA and scored an average of 37 points per game, 7th in college football. The Tech defense was not as efficient, they ranked 49th in total yards giving up 353 yards per game which ranked 49th, the gave up an average of 225 yards per game in the air and 127.4 on the ground.

Tuberville brought in Troy offensive coordinator Neal Brown to develop a system similar to what the team ran under Leach. Taylor Potts threw for over 3,440 yards last season but is being pushed this year by Steven Sheffield, both are very capable of putting up huge numbers but Sheffield looks like he will be the starter coming into fall camp. Whoever is under center they will throw to a corp of wide receivers that all had at least 45 catches in 2009 and that is impressive, hell this sports handicapper can put up big numbers throwing to these guys. Senior Baron Batch gained 884 yards rushing and he is expected to carry the load in 2010. The offensive line will be massive as usual. The smallest of the unit is 290 pound Lonnie Edwards at guard.

The Texas Tech defense will defiantly change under Tuberville, after all he is a defensive minded coach. Tuberville has brought in Alabama linebacker coach James Willis to run the unit and Texas Tech will go to a 3-4 defense. To boost the pass rush star linebacker Brian Duncan moves from the middle to the outside. The team is also counting on Donald Langley and Kenny Hyder to also apply pressure. The defensive line is sound with nose tackle Colby Whitlock ho is entering hi senior season as a 4 year starter. The defensive backfield gave up 12 touchdowns last season SeCody Davis, Franklin Mitchem and cornerback Laron Moore return as starters.

NCAA College Football Free Picks Week 3

Here are some free handicapped picks for college football Week 3.

NORTH CAROLINA (-3) VS. Virginia: North Carolina’s offense has the look of a somewhat effective unit for the first time in years and that is due to the ability of new QB TJ Yates. NC’s 10-4 yards/pass play is indicative of this improvement and this should bode well for the Heels as they play an underachieving Virginia team coached by the embattled Al Groh. The Cavaliers have a decent defense and they should be close in this one for most of the game but their inconsistent offense will undermine them again in front of hostile fans. The key stat here is that Virginia is only 11-23 ATS on the road (which includes 6-21 ATS under Groh). The Cavs clearly get rattled outside of their surroundings so look for the Tar Heels to get the victory. THE PICK: North Carolina (-3)

VIRGINIA TECH (-21) VS. Ohio: The big news for Tech is the insertion of heralded freshman QB Tyrod Taylor in place of the struggling Sean Glennon. This move was one that Hokies coach Frank Beamer just couldn’t wait any longer to do as the 0-2 start have destroyed all ideas of a national championship season. Taylor however is very talented and has the blend of speed and arm strength to spark the Hokies to a nice win over a weak offensive Ohio team. Tech is also 38-16-1 ATS at home as a favorite of less than 25 which included 18-3 against non-conference foes. Go with the Hokies based on this trend along with the spark of being at home with a new QB. THE PICK: Virginia Tech (-21)

College Football Week #10: Where Is Frank Solich?

Ever wondered what happened to Frank Solich?

You remember that guy: he was the coach at the University of Nebraska for six seasons. He was the loyal lieutenant who took over the Cornhuskers from Tom Osborne, proof positive that it’s never a good thing to be the guy who takes over from The Guy. After compiling a 64-19 record as Nebraska’s head man, Solich was callously and controversially fired in favor of Beau Bridges. (Okay, no, it wasn’t Beau Bridges; it was Bridges-look-alike Bill Callahan.)

Solich took a year off, then in 2005 took over the moribund football program at Ohio University (which is, if you’ll allow the digression, quite a long way in prestige, if not geography, from THE Ohio State University). Jim Grobe turned Ohio into a good-not-great MAC team after taking over an 0-11 program in 1995, but Grobe jumped to Wake Forest after the 2000 season (and let’s face it, he didn’t exactly have the greatest record at Ohio: 33-33-1). Between Grobe and Solich came four years of Brian Knorr, who undid just about everything Grobe did, to the tune of 11-35. Solich took over last year, and went 4-7.

Things have gone better in 2006. Ohio is 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the always-exciting MAC, currently tied with Kent St. in the MAC East (and they own the tiebreaker, having upended the Golden Flashes on the road last week). It’s not a great team by MAC standards, but it’s won a conference-high four straight, including an upset win at the University of Illinois just three weeks ago. What’s gone best for the Bobcats has been their defense: they’re currently 15th in the nation in terms of passing yards allowed per game, and have picked off seven passes compared to allowing eight TDs. Ohio has traveled to Rutgers, Missouri and Illinois (as well as a silly game against I-AA Tennessee-Martin); if you just count the team’s five conference games, they’ve allowed just over 15 points and 278 total yards per game. In the typically-high-flying MAC, that’s pretty darn good. The Bobcats have eight returning starters on offense, and seem to be gelling there as well, especially on the ground: during this four-game win streak, Ohio is averaging 26.5 points scored and 210 yards rushing per game. At the same time, they’ve got the 108th-best passing offense in Division 1 football; this truly is a mini-Nebraska circa Three Yards And A Cloud Of Dust.

On the road against Eastern Michigan this week, I think that’ll work. The Eagles are 106th nationally in rushing yards allowed per game (a whopping 181), and also give up 4.9 yards per carry. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a blinking red light. Eastern Michigan allowed 178 rushing yards to Western Michigan last weekend, 175 to Toledo before that, 159 to Bowling Green before that, 179 to Louisiana-Lafayette before that, 176 to Central Michigan…oh, heck, you get the point. This huge rush-defense number is no outlier: the Eagles are challenged on the defensive side of the ball. Plus, on offense, Jeff Genyk’s team has scored a MAC-worst 16 points per conference game. Three different quarterbacks have started for Genyk — Andy Schmitt, Tyler Jones and Dontayo Gage — but the team’s sacks and interceptions outweigh their touchdown passes. Overall, Eastern Michigan is 1-7, and 1-4 in MAC games.

Ohio has probably been better at home than on the road, though their only conference loss did come in Athens. Eastern Michigan has only hosted two games so far this year, and will play three of their next four in Ypsilanti. This line opened at Ohio by 4.5, but zoomed quickly to 6.5. But the trends look good for the Bobcats, too. They’re 4-0 against the spread during this modest winning streak, and 4-1 ATS in their conference games this year. Eastern Michigan, for their part, is 1-4 ATS versus winning teams, and 2-5 ATS as a home underdog. Most of all, I like the Solich running game, paced by Kalvin McRae and his 11 touchdowns, to dominate the clock and the scoreboard against the rush-defense-challenged Eastern Michigan. The march to the MAC title game continues this weekend, and I’ll take Ohio (-6.5) at Eastern Michigan.

Last Week: Ohio State didn’t even bother making it interesting against Minnesota, shutting out the hapless Gophers, 44-0. Taking the Buckeyes and giving the 27 points was the right thing to do, and thus I’m exceedingly glad I recommended that you do it. That cover puts us at 6-3 against the spread so far this year.

Backyard Brawl Football Game – West Virginia University (WVU) Versus University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)

While the Backyard Brawl may sound like a professional wrestling pay per view event it is in actuality the name given to the annual football game held every season between the West Virginia University (WVU) Mountaineers and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Panthers. The historic rivalry between these two nearby college football programs has its roots in the first meeting that occurred all the way back on October 26, 1895. The inaugural game was played in Wheeling, West Virginia, a neutral site, and the final score on that day left the West Virginia Mountaineers victorious over the Pittsburgh Panthers by a score of 8-0 in what would prove to be the first of over a hundred meetings between these two college football programs.

The phrase Backyard Brawl is a hyperbole derived from the close physical proximity that the two campuses are from each other. The University of Pittsburgh is not surprisingly located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and West Virginia University is based in Morgantown, West Virginia. The two schools are separated by about 75 miles. The relatively short distance between the two Big East Conference schools makes the roughly one and a half hour drive along Interstate 79 from one college to the other a breeze for students and alumni making the trek for away football games.

The popularity of name Backyard Brawl has become so great in the area that it has more recently extended from the grid iron onto the hardwood as the basketball programs have adopted the moniker for their biannual Big East Conference meetings. After 102 football games between one another and 180 basketball games it is fair to say that the two schools are intimately familiar with one another. The regional rivalry that began simply as a football centric issue has evolved to concern every aspect that the two respected institutions of higher learning can compete in.

With specific regards to football the University of Pittsburgh leads the overall series by a fairly sizable margin. Through 2009 the count is 68 head to head wins for Pitt and a mere 38 victories for WVU (there have also been 3 ties along the way in 1909, 1985, and 1989). Even though the University of Pittsburgh enjoys its current series lead in part because of a dominant stretch of 15 consecutive victories from 1929 to 1946 the competition has been very even over the last decade. In fact, over the last ten years the series is split with five wins for each of the stories programs.

Defeating Press Coverage When Coaching Youth Football

How do you defeat press coverage when coaching youth football? Most non-select teams in youth football do not play this type of coverage with their defensive backs, as it requires very physical and athletic corners. Press coverage almost always has the defensive backs right in the face of your receivers, with the defensive backs playing very physical, they will try to get their hands on your receivers and try to jam them up at the line of scrimmage. You may run into a team or two a season that may run press coverage part of the time or if you go play in a tournament, you may see a stacked team run this type of coverage all of the time. In either case if you are a good coach, you want to be prepared.

Press coverage is almost always man coverage in youth football. Remember this isn’t the NFL, a defensive back can put his hands on the receiver as long as the ball is not in the air and until the receiver has made it evident he is no longer a potential blocker ( after he is behind the defender). If you throw a lot of timing routes like slants, arrows, short hitches and screens, press coverage often completely disrupts the timing and effectiveness of these plays. On longer routes the defensive strategy is to take receivers off their route paths and slow them down, giving the blitzing linebackers more time to sack the quarterback before the receiver can get open or to his spot.

Beating It

To beat press coverage, you have to create space between your receiver and the defender. Space gives your receivers an opportunity to make a move and put additional space between themselves and the defender before the press contact can be made. You do this by alignment, making sure your primary threat receivers are off the line of scrimmage by putting him in a flanker, slot or wing position. The most effective way to put space between your receivers and press coverage is to then put your biggest threat receiver in motion. The motion creates additional space and if you motion under another receiver or even across the formation, the defenders often have to switch man assignments, creating havoc and creating space for your other receivers as the defense realigns.

Other Solutions

Another way to counteract man press coverage is by technique. If a receiver wants to get outside, he can use a swim move to get by the defender. If he wants to go inside he can use a rip move, if he wants to run over or go to either side of the defender he can also use a club move. If you have a dominant athletic pass catcher and the defender is less physical than your man, these are effective techniques to beat this coverage. Even if the defender is physical, he may tire of having his forearms clubbed every time he tries to put his hands on your receiver. I’ve seen defenders completely stop putting their hands on receivers after getting clubbed a few times in a row.

The Shallow

Against press coverage teams you always want to take vertical shots downfield early as well as run «shallow» routes. Shallow routes are routes where the receiver runs parallel to the line of scrimmage at the heels of the defensive linemen and across the formation to the other side. We often match this with slants from both receivers from the opposite side, to create a wide open short zone we can hit the shallow receiver on, on the run. That type of route is usually wide open versus teams that use press coverage, as those teams often like to blitz linebackers as well. Just run to that open space and make them pay for the blitz with a pass that hits very quickly and usually has some nice yards after catch possibilities. The shallow is extremely effective using motion towards the quarterback.

While we could use some of these concepts out of our base set, we usually run them out of our Spread Single Wing set, the one we use to run the Jet Series out of. Obviously you could adapt these concepts into nearly any offense.

This is something you want to work on as the season progresses because eventually you are going to run into a team that has the kids to employ press coverage. Our jobs as coaches is to make sure we put our kids are into a position to succeed.

Is Your Football Team Conditioning and Practicing the Right Drills?

Conditioning: Dot drilling

Conditioning drills are effective in training and helping athletes be strong and reactive. For this reason, coaches like this drill for its focus on speed and accuracy. The drill set up is a mat or place on the field with 5 dots about a foot away from each other forming an X shape, exactly in the same shape as you would see diamonds arranged on a number five card in a poker deck.

This drill begins with the player starting on two of the outer dots and jumps feet together to the middle dot and then out again to the edge dots separating their feet. Next the player will jump touching each dot with on leg only, and then switch using the other leg. Then continue around the dots with both legs together. The last step is the same as the first hop scotch method but this time when the player reaches the other side they will turn around on the two dots. Because this drill is intended for accuracy and speed, it is recommended that players start out slow and deliberate and then speed up to their maximum time.

Making a great hand off

Whether you are a quarterback, running back, or a player that at anytime will receive a hand off you need to realize the basics of a great hand off. Let’s look at a simple hand off between a quarterback and a running back to point out the fundamentals of this skill. The running back starts the hand off running towards the quarterback with his arms open creating a pocket for the quarterback to slide the football right into the running back’s chest. When the running back receives the football he clamps down both arms hard on the football to protect it. Now that the running back has the ball when he leaves the quarterback he should remain low to the ground in order to react quickly on the field.

Running will increase performance

Endurance is the name of the game when it comes to football, and running will help you endurance grow. Running drills will help you gain stamina so that you will be able to play to your full extent throughout the game. Teams, or individuals, that do not complain throughout the running drills will be better off and better prepared for a game. Because in the end, the team or players that are the fastest are the ones that win the championships. Running also will teach you how to push yourself even when you don’t want too.

Building your muscles and endurance through Weightlifting

No practice regime would be complete without lifting weights. The effects of weight lifting will add muscle to your body and increase strength, this straighten will add to your maximum power. Maximum power should be the goal of your training, because it involves muscle strength and muscle excursion during play. This exertion will help you as a football player to execute your skills on the field with speed and force. As you continue in your weightlifting program, we highly recommend that you get a personal coach to push you in your goals, teach you proper techniques, and ensure that you are doing the right work for your position.

Teaching Zone Coverage For Youth Football – Slow Feet and Bad Angles

To teach Zone coverage to youth football players, you must have the image of the end result firmly fixed in your brain.

Quick pass reads, piston like footwork, razor-sharp drop angles, exacting zone drop depth, ESP-like communication and finally interceptions and incomplete passes.

You will need this image fixed in your brain because what you are likely to start with is:

Slow / No pass reads, sloppy footwork, slow feet, false steps, inexplicable dropped balls and maddening completions.

If you have done a good job in the run game teaching read steps, run support, run pursuit and communication your job will be much easier.

The first step to playing zone effectively is getting players to drop fast and deep enough to:

1. Keep Wide Receivers in front of them

2. See routes develop

Players have to understand that when they identify pass, they must get to their zone NOW!!!

You will have to over come a huge barrier – multi-tasking.

When young players identify pass, they will attempt to do everything at once in 1.8 seconds:

– Watch the QB

– Watch the Wide Receivers

– Figure out who they should cover (even though it is zone)

– Figure out where the ball is going

– Try to remember what they are actually supposed to be doing.

This mental activity, makes the feet slow down and leads to players taking poor drop angles.

Take a focused, step by step coaching approach.

1st focus on speeding up drops.

Get there now!!

Once players demonstrate they are reacting properly to pass keys, then, and only then, should you move on to teaching the other components of zone coverage –

– improving footwork

– sharpening drop angles

– hitting landmarks

– communication

– ball skills

Coach the little things and big things will happen.

Coaching Youth Football – Offensive Line Drill

When planning who my blockers are I utilize this pop warner football drill. I should say, I have my offensive line coaches perform this test. It is a classic test participants block against the instructor was clutches a blocking pad. Every child starts out in a three point stance straight in front of the manager. The coach exhales into the whistle, or shouts a cadence and the participant strikes the pad with as much force as he can and thrust blocks the coach. The instructor will maintain his position while letting the player push him easily. The coach yells out a number giving that player a ranking. We use a range of 1 (weak) to 10 (strong). The children then go to the end of the line and wait until it is their turn again.

You will detect rapidly that a competition will commence among the lids as they start questioning to each other «What was your score from coach?» All of a sudden there is a competition where each kid is trying to out perform one another.

Similar to the Iron man drill, you recognize which players continue to work harder to improve their ranking while other kids lay back and quit trying since they do not like to compete against other kids. The head coach must keep up a good morale for all players on the team. You must pay attention to the weaker kids by giving then just one duty. All coaches should assist these players in helping them specialize at it. Give them time, and as the season progresses, these kids will get good at their skills.

You are a manger, instructor and teacher of youth football, not High School, college or the Pros. Your task is to make certain all kids, particularly the delicate kids do not get an attitude and decide not to play. Please maintain clear-cut notes making sure the delicate kids attitude is positive.

Every athlete is required to start this drill with a proper three point stance.

Another usual inquiry is if the pee wee football players should be taught to block using their hands or using the shoulder pads. Every player should be exposed to each fashion since separate situations may need different types of blocking. The individual participant may find one style easier than the other.

It is common that the same players are your best blockers, runners and passers. All players, regardless of the position the play, will need to thro a block at some point. Also, depending on the offense you set up the running backs and split ends will be required to perform significant blocks.

Presidential Election Upset Occurs Exactly Fifty Years After Merger of Two Football Leagues

It seems somehow fitting that the stunning upset in the Presidential Election happened just one day before the fiftieth anniversary of the official merger of the nation’s two professional football leagues. That historic legislation, signed by President Lyndon Bains Johnson on November 7, 1966, helped pave the way for one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports.

Considered an inferior organization, the AFL began in the mid sixties to gain popularity with football fans. That fact was made clear when the NBC television network interrupted a November 1968 New York Jets and Oakland Raiders game to show the film Heidi, only to be hounded afterward by protests from fans around the country.

It was those very Jets who just two months later managed to pull off an upset similar to the one Donald Trump enjoyed in this recent Presidential Election. In the third Super Bowl New York had to face the Baltimore Colts who, like Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016, were heavily favored to win.

In spite of the fact that the Jets were eighteen point underdogs, quarterback Joe Namath publicly declared that New York would win the game. Donald Trump would make a similar promise about the Presidential Election fifty years later, and history has recorded that both men succeeded.

Namath and the Jets beat the Colts 16-7 to win the Super Bowl, the first ever by an AFL team. The Green Bay Packers of the NFL had dominated the previous Super Bowls, out scoring their opponents in Kansas City and Oakland by a margin of 68-24.

In Joe Namath-like fashion last week, Donald Trump led the Republican Party to an upset victory over Clinton and the Democrats. Almost every election poll had predicted a big win for Clinton, as did every major newspaper and TV network. It promised to be so one-sided that some stations might have even interrupted the coverage to show a film not unlike the infamous decision to show Heidi over the Jets-Raiders matchup.

Fortunately, every station stuck with the election, which proved to be much closer than predicted. The surprise result will obviously have a much larger impact on America than did the Jets victory all those years ago, but that upset on the gridiron proved to be a great benefit to the NFL and the millions of football fans in the country.

A year after that Jets victory the leagues merged into one, which has since then been experiencing incredible financial and social growth for the last fifty years. Perhaps the recent Presidential upset can bring about a similar effect, maybe in the form of a peaceful merger between the two rival political parties to help bridge the antagonistic divisions among the American people.

Youth Football – How Does Your Youth Football Team Stack Up Nationwide?

Youth Football is Youth Football No Matter Where You Live

Many coaches seem to feel biased about certain areas of the country having better quality youth football than other parts of the country. Some youth football coaches from less densely populated areas of the country also seem to often feel a bit inferior about the level of play in their areas.

My personal experience and the evidence of results of National Youth Football Tournaments don’t give credence to those ideas. I’ve seen video or watched teams play from nearly every state in the country and I’ve done clinics for over 5,000 coaches all over the country. I’ve seen great youth football played in areas of the country known for great football like Florida, Texas, Ohio and California. I’ve also seen some of the worst coached youth football in those same states. I’ve seen excellent athleticism and well coached football from states most don’t think of when they think of football, places like Utah, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Illinois and Washington. At the youth level no one area of the country dominates, just look at the winners of the Pop Warner National Championship or the big Unlimited National Tournament in Daytona. The teams come from all over and there is no trend, winners come from all over the nation.

While many feel their leagues are competitive and their area of the country is somehow inherently better than others I highly recommend you take your team to one of the many national tournaments. They are a real eye opener and a great experience for your kids. As a kid I still remember my Bowl trips, especially the plane trip to Las Vegas and I know our kids love going to Florida as well.

As the kids get older maybe there are some differences as weather, regional preferences, and Spring Football or even year round football make certain areas of the country «hotbeds» for football talent. Some states even have huge football budgets and coaches who either don’t teach at all or have very low class loads and even «athletic» periods where they meet with their football players year round in the classroom. Those differences may account for some of the differences in DI Football players coming from various states. But in the early development years the differences are not as large as many might think.

I had the pleasure of working clinics in Utah, Montana and Washington State these last three weeks and they play good youth football there. Great people and coaches in it for the right reasons. These are some of the most organized and well coached leagues I’ve come across. More on that in the next few days along with some UNBELIEVABLE stories. Yes we have a youth football/ live bear story that is almost too unbelievable to report. Just know that while youth football has a lot of commonality across the nation, there are some HUGE nuances, including shooting a live bear in Montana during a youth football event, don’t miss this one.
