Speed Development in Youth Football – A Few Qucik Tips For Developing Speed

Speed Development

For the second consecutive year my youth football program is doing an abbreviated «football speed» development program in the Spring. The program is designed to develop enthusiasm for playing in our program while working on form and «football speed» development.

The program is called FASTT for Fun, Agility, Speed and Technique Training. The program is divided into three segments, the first segment is the «football speed» development portion, We work on form, speed and quickness development here using modern plyometric movements integrated into football movements. We use a combination of body weight, ladder, cone, medicine ball, box jumps and harness work in this portion of the program.

Fundamental Skills Development

The second segment focuses on basic fundamental football technique development. We do not use pads for this. We concentrate on breaking down each fundamental football movement into teachable steps and then perfect those steps. We don’t work our schemes or football plays, this is all fundamental skills development and the drills and skills change daily.

Game Time

The final segment is the pure fun team competitive games portion. Many of these team building games have little if anything to do with football. What they do for the kids is help them develop a bond with each other and help them develop a keen sense of competition while having a whole bunch of fun.

This is not conditioning, this is a process that helps build momentum and enthusiasm in our youth football program. It also shows the players and parents how we work with the kids and gives the kids an understanding of our expectations and communication methods. This certainly helps us in August when many teams are struggling through their first few practices, we are able to move quickly into evaluations, teaching fundamentals and putting in schemes.

Next Seasons Teams

As I may have mentioned in the past, we are expanding our program to 4 teams, an age

6-7 flag team, an age 7-9 tackle team, age 10-11 tackle and age 12-13 tackle. I will be head coaching all 3 tackle teams next season after head coaching 2 of the teams last year. The reason I have all 3 teams is the parents want it that way and I’m grooming 3 head coaches that I want working side by side with me for a season before I turn a team over to them. While several of these future head coaches have excellent credentials, youth football is much more than X’s and O’s. In

Omaha when I expanded from 1 team to 16 teams in 5 short years, we didn’t take the time to do the hands on apprenticeship program and we outgrew our infrastructure, Now we have a Head Coach Development Program in place that will prepare each to be an effective youth football coach.

FASST Over the Summer

The FASST program lasts for 7 weeks and started on April 1, we meet once a week for just 90 minutes. We want to keep the kids very hungry for contact with us and many are playing baseball as well. We leave each player with a written summer development program that they can use if they so choose. We show the parents what we are looking for on the movements in a group presentation in May and leave them with a written workout plan. I let the parents know that I don’t care if junior does any of the movements over the summer, but to let the kids be kids and make sure they are spending a lot of time out in the heat. On the other hand we do have a few kids that are real hard core and if they want to do something on their own over the summer, we give them the tools to do it.

Doing a «Speed Camp» or activity like FASST has helped us set ourselves apart from other Youth Football programs in the area and gives us a nice segue into the fall. Our league rules do not restrict this type of activity in any way, make sure and check your league rules before getting started.

Torn ACL – One of the Most Common Football Injuries

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) can be one of the most devastating injuries a football player can face. Often this type of injury can put a player out of the game for an entire season and in the worst case, end the player’s career. No matter how gifted a football player is, a torn ACL can drastically affect his ability to play the sport as coordination and mobility can both be drastically impaired. Players like Willis McGahee, Dante Culpepper, and Donovan McNabb have all had their careers impacted by torn ACL injuries.

Wear a knee brace to prevent or heal a torn ACL during football games and practices

Healing a torn ACL can be difficult and, in cases when a patient wants to return to a sport, a brace or support of some kind will be necessary. As this is the most common football injury, there are braces that are designed with the sports player in mind. Not only are these knee braces designed to take the pressure off the ACL area, but also created to be strong and durable.

The DonJoy Armor Knee Brace with FourcePoint Hinge is considered by many to be the finest off-the-shelf knee brace available. Off-the-shelf means that no prescription is needed to purchase an Armor Knee Brace. The patient does not have to wait until a brace can be created for them as this brace is available immediately. The brace comes in seven sizes and it can be adjusted to fit comfortably.

There are many other advantages to the Armor knee brace including the fact that the sturdy frame allows the wearer to mold the brace to the leg. The brace is held in place by an anti-migration Supra Condyle pad that does not catch or pinch the calf. Because it is built with sports in mind it can even survive a football game and protect the knee from blunt blows with its own impact guard. There is also a guard’s hinge cover to protect the material of pants and uniforms. The hinge and guards work to build resistance which can keep the knee from either over extending or being thrown to the side. This resistance also shortens the time spent towards a full extension of the knee giving the wearer a more natural gait as they walk or run. This natural movement protects the wearer while he or she is engaged in extreme activities.

The Armor Fource Point Protective Knee Brace protects so well that many college and professional football teams are requesting that players who have weakened knees or previous ACL injuries wear this brace whether or not they are having problem with the joint prior to the game. The brace is not cumbersome and can prevent further injury to the knee safely and without sacrificing mobility.

This brace is not made only for football and anyone with ACL knee issues who is engaging in sports or other activities where the knee could be compromised could benefit from this support.

How to Attack a 2-3-2 Zone Defense in Flag Football

One of the most asked questions flag football coaches ask is how to attack a zone defense. In fact, it was that very question that led to me start selling my Headache Offense and Unbeatable Defense online more than a decade ago. I decided to come up with a set of plays just for this article to show how easy beating a zone defense really is.

Here is one example of how you can move the ball vs. a 2-3-2 zone in a 7man blocking league. All three of these plays attack the «bubble» underneath the Safety and between the Linebacker and Cornerback. This is a very vulnerable part of the zone defense.

Play #1

[Link to play diagrams found at bottom of article]

LSE – Post-corner route with the initial break at about 7 yards depth. Be sure the post part of the route aims to the opposite sideline at about 20-25 yards depth. This is important, as you’ll see in the next play.

RSE – Post route with the break at about 5-7 yards depth.

RWO – Square in route at about 5 yards depth. The ball will be thrown to the «bubble» area.

Center – After an initial block, run a 5 yard hook route above the LT.

QB – The reads are simple.

1) First look at the «bubble» and if it is open, pass to the RWO running into it.

2) If the LB is threatening the bubble, pass to the center. If the Safety is threatening the bubble, pass to the RSE post at the shaded area in the diagram. Pass a bullet to him in stride.

3) If the FS moves to help cover the RSE, just pass to the LSE’s post-corner.

Now what happens if the strong side Corner follows the RWO, anticipating the in route? That brings us to the next play.

Play #2

[Link to play diagrams found at bottom of article]

LSE – Exactly like the previous play’s post-corner, but without the second break. Continue the post across the field until you run out of bounds.

RSE – Run a post exactly like you did in the previous play, except at about 12-15 yards break outside to the sideline at a point 2 or 3 yards underneath your break.

RWO – Run a square in like before, but before you get to the middle of the field, turn around and settle down in the «bubble».

Center – Same as previous play.

QB – Only run this play when you notice the Corner following the RWO on the square in.

1) Read the RWO first and make sure the Corner follows him. If he doesn’t, pass to the RWO in the «bubble». If he does, read the SS.

2) If the Safety isn’t in position to defend the RSE’s break outside, pass to him. Because the Corner vacated the outside zone, he should be open.

3) If the Safety is in tight coverage with the RSE on his out break, pass to the LSE downfield for a huge gain! Be sure and hit him in stride.

If the LB is inside the «bubble», pass to the Center. If the Corner retreats back to his zone before you pass to the RSE, pass to the RWO in the «bubble».

Play #3

[Link to play diagrams found at bottom of article]

Here’s another way to attack that same «bubble».

LSE – Run either a streak or a post similar to the one in the previous play.

RSE – Run a 5-7 yard hook.

RWO – Run a 5 yard hook, sell it by squaring your shoulders to and making eye contact with the QB. Then, quickly break upfield in a streak.

Center – Same as previous play.

QB

1) Start out reading the RWO and (assuming he’s not open) pump-faking to him on the hook.

2) Then read the SS. If he is not in position to cover the «bubble», pass to the RSE. If the SS is in position to cover it, read the RWO streaking. The Safety read must be very quick as you don’t have very much time to pass to the hook-and-go.

Of course, if the LB is in the «bubble» pass to the Center. And if both the RSE and RWO are covered, pass to the LSE downfield.

As with any play set, you need to practice with every possible read the QB can make so the reads become second nature. That way, he won’t have to «think», he just has to «react». If you just put a QB under center without detailed reads, you are destined to fail. You can’t expect a QB to be able to just look out at 4 or 5 different receivers and find the open guy (unless, of course, you have a Joe Montana on your team). That’s like telling a checkers player to just «get the king» in a game of chess!

But, if you teach your QB exactly what to read and how to react, then you don’t have to have a brilliant signal caller, you just need to have one that’s willing to practice. Of course, that means you can’t have too many plays or you won’t be able to execute them correctly. That’s why you need to choose the most powerful plays that can be effective when run over and over again vs. the same team.

Beating a zone defense is about strategy, not athleticism. It’s about out-thinking your opponent. Start drawing zone defenses on pieces of paper and trying to find the weaknesses in them and brainstorm how to exploit them. If you start using your brain, you can easily dismantle any zone defense you face!

Is the "Prima Donna" Attitude Ruining Professional Football?

More and more in professional football we see bizarre touchdown celebrations, strutting and preening after a big play of some sort, and now Chad Johnson has legally changed his last name to his number. What is going on in football today?

The «it’s all about me» attitude that seems to be showing up more and more in our society today, is running rampant through the National Football League. And while some people say it’s just the stars expressing themselves, I personally don’t like it and think that it has the potential to ruin the sport.

How you say? Well, the problem at times bleeds over into the locker room and starts to mess with team chemistry. Look at Terrell Owens for example. Everywhere he goes, eventually he is at odds with someone. And, while a tremendously talented wide receiver, TO starts his antics usually when he is not getting the football as much as he thinks he should.

In two recent games, the football was knocked loose as a player was about to enter the end zone and started his celebration early. These guys were so focused on getting the crowd to focus on them that they screwed up the play itself.

Now for a «quite the opposite» view, take a look at the New England Patriots. Arguably the most successful NFL franchise in recent times. And they focus on finding and keeping players who are team oriented and are willing to fit into their «system». And that system works. Hence three Super Bowl championships in this decade.

So what’s the right way? Well, I don’t think that you can say that there is a right way or a wrong way. But the question for the NFL is which way do the ticket holders prefer? I don’t have the answer to that, but I do know that most NFL fans that I talk to are tired of the antics and prefer their champions to be low key and full of character and integrity.

Now in all of this, there is a glimmer of hope. I read recently that more and more of the younger players coming into the league are not playing the «prima donna» game and are just focused on improving their skills and helping their team win.

I hope that this is the real trend. I’d like for my grandkids to watch these football players and see character, not just characters. If they choose to play the game at any level, I want the players that they try to be like to be someone that they can look up to.

Maybe I’m naïve, but I love the game of football and I don’t want to see it ruined by a few.

How to Keep Players Coming Back in Youth Football

Player Retention Tips in Youth Football

Part of the «mission» when you are coaching youth football should be to retain players. While youth football may not be the thing for some kids, for others it just takes a litle time to grow on them. At the end of every season I have kids on my team who have probably decided they wouldn’t come back to play another season. But somewhere along the way they change their minds to come back and have a great season that changes their opinion of the game forever. While I enjoy seeing my teams play well, execute our football plays perfectly and win Championships, I get a greater amount of satisfaction from getting my players to finish the season and come back to play another year of youth football.

There are a number of things I like to do in the 60 days after the season is over to help change some of those fence sitters minds:

The Season DVD is always a big hit. I do one that includes funny captions, all our accomplishments and we set it to Christian music. You have no idea how often those DVDs are watched by your kids and their families, several of my parents say their kids basically «wore out» the DVD from playing it so often. Heck watching it that much may even help the kids run their football plays out better. These DVDs keep the game fresh in the kids minds and sets you apart from other youth football teams that he could go play for. It may also set you apart from another sport like soccer or the dreaded fall baseball.

I have always sent these DVDs to the kids in December as a Christmas gift along with a letter. In this generic one-size-fits-all letter, I spell out how much I appreciated the season, the parents and the kids. I also include a personal message about what Christmas means to me and my family. Dave Dimmond, a friend of mine from Florida has been sending personalized letters to his kids for quite some time. He talks about how much he appreciated the players contributions to the team and talks about very specific events and attributes for each individual player. While this may seem very time consuming, Dave reports that these letters are treasured by his kids and some of the kids even frame them. This is something I will be doing for each of my players this year and for the foreseeable future.

Most youth football players need just a little bit of public encouragement to get them enthused about the game, that includes your star players. You never know which kid may be feeling a bit inadequate about his efforts. We all have kids that aren’t starters that we know will develop into good players in the coming year or two. Unfortunately some of these kids don’t understand that with a year under their belts, they will be next years «star». Some of these kids lose interest and drop out of football altogether without the proper encouragement. If we believe youth football teaches life lessons, our goal as coaches should be to retain all the kids no matter their ability. I want to retain the stars, future stars and never will be stars as well. Some uninformed people think it’s a mutually exclusive deal, bit it’s simply not true, you can play kids, retain kids and win too, even in the most competitive of youth football leagues. I’ve done it and so have many others.

Take the time to do things like this and your retention numbers will increase. Guys like Dave Dimmond are the guys kids love playing for, he’s the guy getting mobbed at the gas station by his present and former players. He tells me he gets e-mails that often start out something like this:

Coach Dimmond,

My name is John Smith, a friend of mine, Mike Jones has been raving about your youth football team for the last year. He brags about how much fun his boy Jimmy has playing for you as well as how your team went 11-0 last season scoring all those points with that offense John brags about all the time. How do I get my son signed up for your team ? Do you have any spots left?

I also like to have the kids take the team trophy home for a week. We then have them bring the trophy to school and pass it along to a teammate who keeps it for a week and then passes it along to the next player on the list. This keeps your teams name fresh at school and in the minds of impressionable young kids while giving your players something they can show off for their family and friends.

If you are coaching youth football and your teams are consistently competitive, you will get e-mails like that too, we all do. Encourage your players and get creative with keeping football fresh in their minds and not only will you get better retention numbers but you won’t be hurting for new players either.

University of Missouri (MU) Tigers Football Player Taken in 2010 NFL Draft – 1 Mizzou Tiger Selected

The University of Missouri (commonly referred to as MU or Mizzou) Tigers had one player taken in the 2010 NFL Draft that was held in New York City in April. The name of the lone player selected from the Columbia, Missouri based college is Sean Weatherspoon.

Weatherspoon was the first player selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft with the 19th overall pick. The Falcons are excited about adding a talented young linebacker to the heart of their defense.

Weatherspoon was born in December of 1987 in Greenville, South Carolina and long before he grew into a top tier professional football prospect at 6’1″ and 239 pounds he excelled as a high school athlete in the rich prep football land of the state of Texas. The multi-talented Weatherspoon demonstrated himself to be a three sport star at Jasper High School in Jasper, Texas. Jasper is located near the Louisiana and Texas border on the east side of Texas.

In addition to being a college recruited linebacker in high school Sean played basketball and participated in track and field at Jasper High School. While best known for being an All-State football player Sean was an All-District performer as a guard on the basketball team and an All-State high jumper on the track team.

Despite being a dual threat as a contributor on both defense and offense as a wide receiver on the grid iron in high school Sean had to overcome the hurdle of being relatively undersized for his linebacker position as a high school athlete looking for top tier collegiate football recruiting attention. Despite eventually vaulting himself to becoming the second linebacker selected in the 2010 NFL Draft (behind only Rolando McClain from the University of Alabama who was taken by the Oakland Raiders with the number 8 pick) Weatherspoon had relatively few college football scholarship offers to choose from as a high school senior. Missouri ultimately won out over competing full ride scholarships from Iowa State University and Texas Christian University (TCU) amongst others.

After playing in every game at the University of Missouri as a true freshman in 2006 Sean had a breakout season his sophomore year in 2007 in which he earned first team All-Big 12 honors for his efforts. Sean eventually earned numerous accolades from various organizations as a second and third team All-American selection at his linebacker position.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith is excited about bringing Sean Weatherspoon into his organization. Coach Smith believes Sean will compete for a starting linebacker position and also hopes to get him on the field as soon as possible by using him in special teams situations.

Heisman Trophy – The Race to Claim the Title of College Football’s Premier Player is Heating Up

As conference play approaches, each of the pre-season Heisman hopefuls has either lived up to our expectations of them or begun their slow slide into obscurity. The player who emerges as the final victor will depend not only on outstanding personal performances, but on their team’s ability to consistently win football games – especially key games in their schedules. Early season hopefuls included Ohio State’s Troy Smith and Ted Ginn, Jr., Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson, West Virginia’s Steve Slaton, Chris Leak from Florida, Kenny Irons of Auburn, Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn, Michigan’s Michael Hart, and Northern Illinois’ Garrett Wolfe to name a few.

Let’s take a quick look at how the first three weeks have played out for these notable candidates. Many sportswriters have identified Ohio State’s Troy Smith as the man to beat for the 2006 Heisman award. Not only does Troy Smith have patience in and accuracy from the pocket, but he also has deadly running ability when the heat is on. This rare ability often leaves opponents wondering just exactly how to defend against the Buckeye’s versatile offense. With Ohio State’s current #1 rankings in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls, the spotlight will remain on Troy as the season progresses.

Running backs Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma and Steve Slaton of West Virginia are making their presence known as well. Although Oklahoma lost its last game, Adrian Peterson put in a respectable day’s work at the office. With 515 yards in three games he has proven himself a worthy candidate for this year’s voting. Not to be outdone, West Virginia’s Steve Slaton showed us he has all the right moves as he rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns against Maryland under the spotlight of a nationally televised game. Watch both of these backs closely as they via for Hesiman voting points in the upcoming weeks.

If you want to get noticed by the journalists and former Heisman Trophy winners who cast their votes for the Heisman, stage a spectacular comeback against a key rival on their home turf. Chris Leak did no less than exactly that against rival Tennessee when he engineered a comeback from 10 points down to lead Florida to a 21-20 victory over the Volunteers. 199 yards passing and 3 touchdowns on 15 completions in that game earned Chris strong Heisman consideration at this point in the season.

Ohio State’s Ted Ginn, Jr. and Auburn’s Kenny Irons are two preseason favorites who have struggled to make the big plays necessary to keep them in the running for the title of college football’s player of the year. This is not to say that they have not significantly contributed to the success of their teams, because they certainly have, but in order to win the Heisman, you must outshine the other candidates with highlight reel performances that keep you ahead of the pack. So far this season Ted Ginn, Jr. has not lived up to his reputation as a show-stopping kick-off and punt return specialist, and Kenny Irons has not churned out the big yards needed to stay with the other top running backs across the country.

Michigan’s Michael Hart has consistently given Michigan fans something to cheer about so far this season. Hart’s third straight 100+ yard rushing performance has helped Michigan get off to an enviable start in 2006. If Michigan and Michael Hart continue their winning ways, look for a late season Heisman showdown between Hart and OSU’s Troy Smith on November 18th in Ohio Stadium.

On the other side of Michigan’s last victory was Notre Dame. Brady Quinn’s sub-par performance in that loss has taken some of the steam out of his run for the Heisman. It will take significantly better play from Brady to get back into this year’s running. Only the strength of Notre Dame’s schedule can provide the stage for Brady to play the role of catch-up the rest of the season.

If you think a small conference can’t produce a Heisman winner, don’t tell Northern Illinois’ Garrett Wolfe. He leads the nation in rushing so far in 2006 and showed signs of greatness even against Ohio State’s stingy defense. If Garrett can stay healthy and continue to put up big numbers and flashy personal performances week in and week out, he just might surprise a lot of this year’s other Heisman hopefuls.

With only three games played thus far in 2006, it is still too early to know for sure who will walk away this year’s Heisman Trophy winner. Rest assured that each of the contenders with Heisman dreams will continue to play his heart out to be the one to hear his name announced from that sacred podium in New York on December 9th. We are all in for some great performances! Enjoy the action.

Increase Your Athletic Potential As a Football Player – Build Strength, Power, Speed, and Agility

Football has specific demands that need to be addressed when training. As you are working to become a better player focus on training the following areas.

* Explosive acceleration and fast sprinting speed.

* Muscular endurance and strength in the lower body.

* Muscular balance and high levels of neuromuscular coordination.

* Body awareness and agility, the ability to know where your body is, and be able to move it.

* Good flexibility to avoid injury, football players are prone to poor hamstring flexibility.

* Correct balance between your quadriceps and hamstrings, as well as strength imbalances between your left and right leg.

Set Your Goals:

*****Get better- Work harder

*****Standout from the rest in all competition

*****Become the best you can through effective training

*****Raise your personal bar of excellence with each routine

*****Leave nothing on the field- give everything you have.

Follow a football training conditioning program. There are four components necessary to prepare for football season:

Strength, Power, Speed, and Agility.

Fundamentals, speed, strength, agility, power, and endurance are what coaches are looking for in their high school football players. If you can build these areas to their maximum potential then you will be noticed by coaches and recruiters.Use the football drills to improve your ability and talent. Then learn to incorporate the benefit of the drills into your game. Develop the ability to showcase your talents and skills on demand.

Strength training is important to prevent injury and to improve your athletic performance. It is strength training that will make you a stand out player… continuous, effective, sport-specific training. If you have the desire to play at the next level, know that it will require hard work , determination, and a great strength training program.

Power, on the other hand, may be viewed as quickness in running or jumping. Power is displayed in the speed of your motion.

When training to increase your power focus on the speed of the lift as well as the amount of weight that you lift. Now, this may seem contradictory to those of you who were always taught to lift weights slowly. However, the important difference with power training is that you lift explosively but WITH control. Controlling the weight is essential to proper power development.

The theory is that moving a heavy weight very fast requires more power than moving that same weight slowly. If you are looking to develop serious power and improve your athleticism there are many power routines that you can incorporate into your workout. Understand that these routines are different from training for muscle mass or bodybuilding.

Speed training is equally important for football players. The secret to speed training is to apply power to good running mechanics. Knowing the proper sprinting technique is crucial.

Maximum velocity isn’t achieved until 30-35 meters into your run. So for a sport like football where you are more interested in shorter sprints, maximum speed may not be the number one goal of your speed training.

Acceleration becomes the desired outcome of your training. However, training to improve maximum speed also will improve your acceleration, power, coordination, and dynamic flexibility.

Agility is the ability to change direction quickly, as well as accelerate and decelerate at a moments notice. Football is an examples of an «open-skill» sport. This means there is ever changing movement required from the athlete.

When one player is covering another the critical factor becomes which player can move faster into a superior position. The competitive edge goes to the player with the most agility.

Think of agility as applying speed, accelerating, decelerating, maintaining balance, maximizing power and changing direction while your surrounding environment continues to change.

You can improve your agility through drills. However drills will only be effective if you have a foundation of strength, power, and speed already in place.
