A Medaieval Football match

Ever thought of football as an extreme sport?

Welcome to the world of Royal Ashbourne Shrovetide Football (Shrovetide)!

I was introduced to Shrovetide when I met my then-to-be husband, a determined Shrovetider, and asked him how he’d broken his nose!

Shrovetide football is played in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England, on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday every year, as it has done annually from at least the 12th Century (not even the world wars stopped play.)

Both the inventors of Rugby, and Association football, had strong Ashbourne, and Shrovetide connections.

The goal posts are 3 miles apart, there is no pitch, just the streets of the town, the surrounding fields, and of course, the river Henmore, which is perhaps the most important area of play. This is because the goal posts are at the site of the old mill wheels of the two mediaeval water mills, upstream and downstream from the town, respectively.

The ball (brightly painted leather, about the size of a medicine ball) is ritually thrown to the mob (known as «The Hug») at 2 p.m. each day, and is then fought over by two teams, the «Uppards», who try to score it at the upstream goal, and «Downards», who try to score it at the downstream goal, until 10 p.m.

As the ball is made of leather, with a stuffing of sawdust, as it gets wetter, it gets heavier. It also swells. Thus, by the time it has reached one or other of the goals, most of its paint has been rubbed off, and it is a sorry sight as it is victoriously carried aloft back to The Green Man, to mark the end of play.

(If the ball is goaled before 5 p.m., a second ball is turned up, but normally the ball is not goaled until well after 5 p.m., if at all.)

Loyalties are decided by birth, if you’re born upstream, or from an upstream family you’re an Uppard, and vice versa. (This differs from most ball games, in that the aim is to score an «own goal»)

There is no limit to the number of players on each side, and very few rules, so the game is very rough and tumble. It is all played in good humour, so deaths are infrequent, but it is a great spectacle to watch.

As the field of play is the whole town, spectators get caught up in events, but it’s quite safe – there are refuges in enclosed areas to ensure only players have any chance of injury.

It can be quite disconcerting, however, to see 4 to 5 hundred men in rags and hobnail boots rampaging towards you!

The river banks form a fantastic viewing platform for watching river play, and cheers go up from the crowd whenever the ball is seen.

It can be cold, but luckily Ashbourne has many historic pubs, cafes and restaurants to get you warm, and the pubs open each day before the game starts, and do not shut until well after the game finishes.

The locals are very welcoming, and someone in the crowd will always explain the finer points of play, as they’re intensely proud of their unique heritage.

Colt McCoy & Jordan Shipley University of Texas (UT) Football Teammates, Roommates, & Family Friends

Colt McCoy is best known for his success at playing the quarterback position for the University of Texas (UT) Longhorns based in Austin, Texas. In fact, his success as a college passer was so prolific that he attained benchmarks never before accomplished by anyone including setting the all-time record for most wins by a quarterback with a grand total of 45 over a four year career.

Chief amongst the numerous reasons for the success Colt experienced are his father Brad McCoy who played at UT in his youth and coached Colt in high school and Jordan Shipley who in addition to being a good friend and former roommate to Colt was also his favorite receiver during the four years that the two played together in college. Interestingly there is a link between Brad McCoy and Jordan Shipley that circumvents Colt altogether.

Jordan Shipley has a father named Bob Shipley who served as the high school football coach for his son, the record breaking wide receiver from a small town in central Texas with a population of 1,600 people. Bob Shipley played football at the University of Texas when he was a younger man and during that time he was teammates, friends, and even roommates with Brad McCoy, the man who would eventually become the father of Colt McCoy.

Jordan Shipley and Colt McCoy were born less than a year apart in the mid-1980s and grew up in tiny central Texas cities that are located about an hour and a half apart on opposite sides of the small Texas city of Abilene. Jordan was raised in Rotan, TX (population 1,611) while Colt grew up in Tuscola, TX (population 714) 80 miles south of Rotan.

Interestingly both Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley had fathers that served as their high school football coaches at their respective schools and the two standout players played complimentary offensive positions with Colt being a quarterback and Shipley a wide receiver. Both players went onto become nationally renowned football stars while playing college football together in Austin, Texas which is only a bit more than 200 miles south of where the two boys grew up.

The relationship that Bob Shipley and Brad McCoy formed decades earlier came full circle when their two boys followed in their footsteps and became not only contributing players to the University of Texas Longhorns football program but more importantly good friends. The bond between the McCoy and Shipley families is a unique one that is filled with shared experiences that will likely continue for lifetimes and possibly into future generations.

The History of World Cup Football

The FIFA World Cup (often called the Football World Cup or simply the World Cup) is the most important competition in international football (soccer), and the world’s most representative team sport event. Organised by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s governing body, the World Cup is contested by the men’s national football teams of FIFA member nations. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II), however it is more of an ongoing event as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years preceding the final rounds. The final tournament phase (often called the «Finals») involves 32 national teams competing over a four-week period in a previously nominated host nation, with these games making it the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.[1] In the 17 tournaments held, only seven nations have ever won the World Cup Finals. Brazil are the current holders, as well as the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times, while Germany and Italy follow with three titles each. The next football World Cup Finals will be held in Germany.

The first international football match was played in 1872 between England and Scotland, although at this stage the sport was rarely played outside Great Britain. As football began to increase in popularity, it was held as a demonstration sport (with no medals awarded) at the 1900, 1904 and 1906 Summer Olympics before football became an official competition at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Organised by England’s Football Association, the event was for amateur players only and was regarded suspiciously as a show rather than a competition. The England national amateur football team won the event in both 1908 and 1912.

With the Olympic event continuing to be contested only between amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organised the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The competition is often described as The First World Cup,and featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. The first tournament was won by West Auckland, an amateur side from north-east England that was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the competition. West Auckland returned in 1911 to successfully defend their title, and were given the trophy to keep forever, as per the rules of the competition.

In 1914, FIFA agreed to recognise the Olympic tournament as a «world football championship for amateurs», and took responsibility for organising the event. This led the way for the world’s first intercontinental football competition, at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament, before winning the gold medal again in 1928, with another South American team, Argentina, taking silver. In 1928 FIFA made the decision to stage their own international tournament. With Uruguay now two-time official football world champions and due to celebrate their centenary of independence in 1930, FIFA named Uruguay as the host country.

The 1932 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, did not plan to include football as part of the programme due to the low popularity of football in the United States. FIFA and the IOC also disagreed over the status of amateur players, and so football was dropped from the Games.FIFA president Jules Rimet thus set about organising the inaugural World Cup tournament to be held in Uruguay in 1930. The national associations of selected nations were invited to send a team, but the choice of Uruguay as a venue for the competition meant a long and costly trip across the Atlantic Ocean for European sides. Indeed, no European country pledged to send a team until two months before the start of the competition.Rimet eventually persuaded teams from Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia to make the trip. In total 13 nations took part — seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America.

A spin-off tournament, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, was first held in 1991. It is similar to the men’s tournament in format, but so far has not generated the same level of interest.

How to Win At Table Football – A Beginners Guide

Table football may be considered by some to be a fun gimmick, however many players play the game in a very competitive nature. This article will attempt to provide you with some tips and information in order to beat your mates and become king of table football. Generally there are three simple rules to follow in order to have success; finesse, positioning, and control. Understanding these three skill areas will hopefully lead to you beating your mates on a regular basis.

First of all when it comes to table football many people make the mistake of trying to hit the ball as hard as possible, with no regard for direction and finesse. This is a common mistake among players, and you can see dramatic improvements in your play by simply taking your time and picking out the shots to take. Aim your shots on goal by positioning the ball to either side of the striking player when shooting. Try to find gaps in the opposition’s defence line and then exploit them to create goal scoring chances.

The second skill to focus on is the positioning of your own players. This has an increasing importance on the defensive side of the game. Try to align your players to match the opposition’s player position, this will allow you to get good blocks in and hit them on the counter attack. When defending its vital to always have control of the midfield and the goalkeeper rather than your attacking players. This is so you can adjust quickly and clear the ball up the pitch to your attackers to create chances for yourself.

The third area to spend time practising is that of ball control. Being able to keep control of the ball and work shooting opportunities often makes the difference between winning and losing the game. Side passes provide an excellent chance to switch the ball quickly from the flank to the centre and get a potentially lethal shot on goal with.

Practice these three key skill areas and you’ll be beating your mates in no time, it really is as simple as that!

How Live Football Streams Are Achieved

As a self-confessed football obsessive, I need to be able to access live broadcasts of the top games wherever I am. Sometimes it’s not always possible to find somewhere that shows the particular match I want to watch but thanks to technological advancements I can now watch almost any match I wish through a live football stream.

With the help of the internet and some networking facilities, I am able to watch streaming live football via my computer in the office and my laptop should I be stuck in a hotel room somewhere. Being able to watch any one of a number of football matches being broadcast on a particular day is all well and good, but this article tries to explain how it’s done for the more inquisitive natures out there.

To understand how live football streams work, you first need to understand a little bit about networking. In its most simple form, networking is one computer exchanging data with another computer. To be really simplistic, there isn’t a lot of difference between this and mailing a letter.

The first computer addresses a piece of information to another computer and then sends it across the cable that connects computers to one another. The second computer checks the addresses of all of the messages coming by and reads only the messages addressed to it.

Live football stream is achieved with the help of streaming media. This concept is not as foreign as it sounds and it simply acts like an ordinary television or a radio broadcast that streams live football matches. When you wish to view a certain live football stream, a programme called a «streaming media server» breaks up the desired file into pieces called «packets».

These packets race across the Internet one at a time and get reassembled back into your computer the same way. Providing you have a fast internet connection and the server is not overloaded, the live football streams will begin playing instantly on your PC and the file size is generally small.

Unfortunately, like most good things, there is a drawback to using football streams to get your fix of live action. Since it is live and should be delivered just in time across the potentially unpredictable internet network, quality is sacrificed in order to enhance speed and performance. Even though the main use of streaming video is web delivery, this type is not suited for local presentations.

To view live football steams, your computer requires a special program, called a streaming media plug-in. These plug-in programs are generally free and can be downloaded from the internet.

The difference between downloading video from the internet and watching a live football stream is that the user doesn’t need to wait for the entire media file to download before it can get viewed. While the quality may not be perfect, a live football stream appears to begin to play almost instantly.

Iowa Football Helmet – A History

The modern era of University of Iowa football helmets began with a yellow helmet, gray facemask, black vertical stripe and black numbers on the side. This design was used through 1964 and was brought back once in 2010 in a game against Ball State to commemorate the 1959 Rose Bowl Champion Hawkeye squad. The first major change occurred in 1965 when the numbers on the side were replaced by a black «I» with a white circle and a thin black outline in the logo spot. This logo did not last long, however. By 1966, the «I» was removed and the helmet was just solid yellow with black and white vertical stripes.

A logo returned in 1971 with a large soaring eagle across a black background. The eagle had a lot of shading to it. Since the background was now black, the vertical striping switched to a single yellow vertical stripe. This was the second time a logo only lasted one year. By 1972, the logo was changed with all the shading being removed. The eagle was solid yellow, and its talons were similar but slightly altered and thicker. By 1974, Iowa decided it like the solid design again and went back to the solid yellow helmet; this time only having one black stripe with no white stripe outline like they did in the late sixties.

The year 1977 marked another shift. As was popular in that era, the name Iowa in cursive was applied to the yellow helmet with black stripe. The Iowa decal was black but outlined in black. As facemasks of different colors became available, the uniform designers at Iowa decided that a black facemask would fit this design perfectly. The design overall looked pretty crisp as black and yellow are some of the easiest colors to read and see from afar (the billboard industry knows this and uses this scheme often when they are trying to catch your attention).

The current Iowa football helmet has been in use for over 30 years believe it or not. The black helmet with yellow stripe and a graphic Hawkeye head came into use in 1979. This is one of the most memorable logos in college sports and immediately catches your eye with the beak, eye, head, and part stretching from the eye toward the body. High schools and other teams have used this popular logo. There have been a few occasions since 1979 when the Hawkeye football team wore a different helmet. At least twice they have worn an all black helmet to mourn either campus shooting victims or a player’s parents. They also wore a gold helmet once in 2004 to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of Kinnick Stadium.

One final interesting element of the Iowa Hawkeyes football helmet has been the «ANF» letters which where place on a small decal on the back of the helmet. This was worn in the mid to late 80’s and early 90’s. Many people wonder what those letters stood for when they look at historic photos of the Hawkeye team. «America Needs Farmers» is what the ANF stood for and it was meant to support struggling farmers. Even in 2011, they continue to have special America Needs Farmers days where farmers are invited and paid tribute to. It makes sense when you think of Iowa as the corn and soybean farming capital of America.
