Football Special Teams Training – How to Bust the Wedge

Special teams can make the difference in who goes home with the win and who suffers the loss.

Simply put the receiving teams job is to advance the kick off return as far down the field as possible. With a couple of key blocks, put the ball in the end zone. Setting up those key blocks starts with the wedge.

The wedge as we all know is a wall of players the return man screens behind hoping to find the opening that can spring him for big yards or a 6 point run back.

The kicking team sends down its rushers and wedge busters, running full speed, risking life and limb as they hurl their bodies at the players making up the wedge. Sometimes the wedge busters are successful, stopping big run backs. However there are many times they are not, allowing the big momentum changing run back. Momentum that can change the out come of the game.

How do we become more effective in busting the return teams blocking wedge? Don’t try to run over or knock down the blockers. Instead split the blockers.

Run straight at the blocker full speed, sell him on the fact you plan to run over the top of him. No matter how skilled and practiced he is, at the last moment he will be bracing for the impact. Rather than make head to head contact, split the blockers, run between them taking the best angle to the ball carrier. Not only do you reduce injury risk to yourself, you will frequently find yourself in position to make the tackle, stopping a long kick off return and staving off any momentum changing returns, like a 6 pointer.

How to Find the Perfect Football Boots?

Are you passionate about football and want to become the next Messi or Ronaldo? This will certainly need some kicking. And for that, you will need a perfect pair of football shoes. The decision to select football boots is not as easy as it sounds. Many factors can influence your choice of these shoes. In this article, we will try to explore the most important factors that must be considered before tying up your laces. Read on.

Playing Position and Style

You can be a striker, midfielder, defender or goalkeeper while playing football (soccer). No matter what position you are playing in and what style you have adopted, kicking the ball is compulsory. We have some pieces of advice related to boots selection for each position.

If you are a striker or forward, go for light-weight shoes. This will help you accelerate your moves to beat the defenders and find the back of the net. For defenders and goalkeepers, protective shoes are preferred as this will help him making clearances and passing the ball with precision in intense areas. If you are a midfielder, it is better to opt for shoes that offer comfort and control.

Know-how of Brands

You cannot straight away walk into an outlet and ask for a pair of football boots. This is not a grocery item that you consume. It is something that will play a vital role in your journey of becoming a superstar. Therefore, get some knowledge about brands.

See what football stars use and find out which brand offers the best quality shoes that compliment your style and position. You don’t need to always go for top-notch brands of the world. Just focus on the specifications and reviews. It will also need some research work to get shoes of your type.

Don’t Purchase before trying

Make your homework strong but never buy one if you are not comfortable with them or because of someone’s endorsement and recommendation. Search for reliable stores, get in there, try the shoes on and purchase only if you are 100% comfortable with them. Plus, you should never compromise on comfort. Colors, price, or commercials have secondary importance.

Get the Correct Size

There must be a gap of around a half-inch between your toes and head of the shoes. To make it simpler, just make sure that there is enough space for another thumb within that area. Another way of checking this is by pressing the top of your boot. If your toe is touching the top of the boot, ask the shopkeeper to give you a larger size.

So, that’s how the selection of football shoes can be easy. It might require some research work but don’t feel lazy to do that. The selection of a perfect pair of shoes is as important in football as the skill set required to play this beautiful game. Take your time and don’t rush to make this decision, be patient.

How To Remove Stickers and Decals Off a Football Visor and Window of Your Car or Truck

Question: When putting decals on a Football Helmet Visor, how do you remove the black decals that come on the visor?

Answer: If the sticker or decal that is on the visor is an easy peel vinyl, it should remove easily, but if it’s a standard adhesive, it can be difficult to remove.

In this case, what you’d need to do is get a hair dryer and heat the decal up enough that it is quite warm – but not hot – to the touch. Once this is done, get a fingernail under one edge of the decal and slowly pull it off. Hopefully it won’t leave any adhesive behind.

If it does leave some adhesive behind, you can get «orange peel» glue removers from the hardware store or possibly a larger grocery store as well. Apply to a soft paper or cloth towel, then dab on the glue until it softens, then rub it until it comes off. Clean the remaining residue with a dry corner of the towel. This type of glue remover works well on most plastics I’ve used without dulling or clouding the finish of the plastic.

Question: I purchased a large decal to apply to the rear window of my car, and I was wondering if there is any product that could be applied to the rear window to make the sticker easier to remove, plus protect the window simultaneously?

Answer: Not that we’re aware of. In reality, the decal itself will protect your vehicle’s rear window quite well. And if you understand how glue works, you won’t need to worry about getting the decal back off.

Of course, now I’m going to tell you how to get window decals off your car windows or bumpers the easy way. Well, sort of easy.

Most window stickers of the exterior application variety will be printed on vinyl sticker material or polyester decal material. The glue typically used is an acrylic adhesive, which, over time, becomes hardened and more difficult to remove. If you’re purchasing wholesale decals for resale, it might be wise to look into removable glue decal materials which are becoming popular for this reason.

But no mind. In your case you’ve already purchased a large sticker for the back window of your car, and you’re nervous about damaging the window, either during the application or removal of the decal later. In neither case do you need to worry about the window.

When it comes time to remove the decal from your car or truck, get a heat gun or a hair dryer to warm up the decal. If you’re using a heat gun, the lowest heat setting should do the trick. If you are using a hair dryer, you’ll likely need to use the highest heat setting. With large stickers, you may need to heat a small section of the decal and work it off a section at a time, especially if it’s been on the rig for an extended period of time. Once you’ve heated a small area (100 square inches or so), begin to peel the vinyl with a slow but steady pulling motion at around a 45 degree angle. As you get to the end of the heated window/vinyl, you’ll feel it become more difficult to remove the vinyl. Stop and heat another section of vinyl/glass, and repeat.

When you have the entire decal removed, you may find that there is some glue residue remaining on the glass. You’ll need a good «orange peel» oil glue remover, available at many hardware stores, to apply with a spray bottle or a soft towel or soft paper towel to the glue. Allow the glue remover a couple minutes to soften the glue. You may want to apply a second application of the glue remover to the residual glue to further soften it, especially if the decals have been on your car for more than a year.

Once you’ve softened the glue sufficiently, you can take a glue remover soaked towel and gently rub the areas where the glue is remaining. Once you can visually observe that the glue is gone, take a dry, soft towel and wipe the window again to remove the glue remover residue. If you need to apply graphics immediately, you can use isopropyl alcohol to neutralize the glue remover, or if the decal was on a painted surface on your car or truck, warm soapy water may be preferable to alcohol, which could potentially dull your car’s finish.

Fantasy Football – A Lesson In Monetizing Anything

Attention entrepreneurial spirits – the following would have seemed as fictional as Star Wars to our grandfathers, not to mention Vince Lombardi. However, it’s all true and there’s a valuable lesson in this – you can monetize anything!

Congratulations to the NFL. They’ve found a way to keep a huge fan base despite the myriad off the field issues they seem to shrug off weekly. The referee strike of 2012 and the inept replacements? Forget it – that didn’t even register on the NFL fan’s «List of Things to Care About. » How could it? This is a league that has recently seen popular players either indicted or found guilty of domestic violence, rape, child abuse, and murder. Nice guys, huh? In short, there is NOTHING that would keep us from tuning in each Thursday, Sunday, and Monday (in my lifetime, I am sure there will be a game on every night of the week). TV ratings suggest this monster really IS too big to fail.

So why do we do it? It’s not because we care about who wins or loses the actual game. Some of us do, but we’re now in the minority. No, the wins and losses are not even the second reason. Sports gambling, though illegal in most states, WAS what kept the NFL atop the list for sports fans. People gamble nearly $10 billion on the Super Bowl alone. Imagine what a full season brings in. The joke used to be something like «Daddy’s favorite team is the Dolphins and he wants them to win by less than 4 points.» However, because gambling has such a negative connotation in society, people don’t talk about it much, and certainly not when they lose.

The thing that will help the NFL remain the king of the hill indefinitely turns out to be the photo negative of gambling. It’s Fantasy Football, and it’s nearly reached the point where we can remove the word «Fantasy» from the name. It’s quite real, and it’s here to stay. Gambling is illegal because it’s considered a «game of chance.» Wagering on Fantasy Football is legal because it is considered a «game of skill» (don’t ask me who decides these things, but it’s true). Gambling is ugly because it can ruin people’s lives when they lose. Fantasy Football is innocent and fun, even though the same amount of money is spent on participating, and yes, half of it is lost. With gambling, there is only money. With Fantasy Football, there is money, but also funny team names, trophies, and bragging rights. It’s market norms versus social norms, once again. Unless you live in one of the few states where gambling is legal, it takes connections to people with connections to partake. Participating in Fantasy Football only requires an internet connection and as little as a $1 investment.

Fantasy Football’s roots can be traced back to the 1960’s, but that was a different world. It wasn’t until the last 10 years, thanks entirely to the internet, that it took flight and became a craze… and a SERIOUS business. About 40 million Americans are playing some form of Fantasy Football this year, and they are spending approximately $2 billion to do so, but that’s just the beginning. When you consider the entire industry, the empire that is Fantasy Football is estimated to be worth more than $50 billion! And it’s going to continue to grow. Everybody’s doin’ it. I play, my friends play. Heck, even NFL players play! Just this week, one NFL player tweeted «I’m probably going to lose my fantasy football matchup this week cause (Adrian Peterson) can’t play Sunday for disciplining his child… » Really.

While you won’t hear announcers talk about point spreads, they frequently refer to Fantasy statistics. The crawl at the bottom of the TV screen is now devoted to the new national pastime. As big as the NFL has become, it recognizes that it NEEDS the Fantasy Football element to keep its brand healthy, so they go out of their way to promote it. There are magazines, books, radio shows, and TV shows devoted to it and there is even a TV series based on a group of friends tied together by their Fantasy Football league. Only in America!

On-line Fantasy Football sites are raking in money, capitalizing on the popularity of this «game of skill.» One of the most popular sites boasts that it pays out more than $10 million per week. Considering they are cleverly charging 10% on every dollar to facilitate the thousands of contests among strangers, it’s easy to calculate how a company like this can quickly become worth millions almost overnight. And it’s not just NFL football. Most of these sites provide the forum for «Fantasy» baseball, hockey, basketball, golf, and the major college sports.

The lesson in all of this is simple – If you build the site, they will come, and they will come with dollars to spend. Find the product that people are crazy about and make it available to them on-line, in any form you can. If you don’t have the product itself, write a book about it. If you don’t want to write a book, write an article and sell it. Position yourself as an «expert» (whoever questions that anyway), and you’ll command a price.

Now, if you’ll excuse me. It’s nearly game time and I need to root for my kicker’s offense to move the ball down the field to the 30 and then get stopped. Strange thing, this Fantasy Football.

Defenders Shooting Your Gaps? How to Solve That Problem in Youth Football

Some youth football coaches fear that by pulling their linemen, they will leave big gaps in their offensive line that can easily be filled by defenders and cause negative yardage football plays. On the face, that argument may have merit, but when you look at the details it just doesn’t if you use a few very simple techniques. If your offensive line has splits that are like you see from Texas Tech on TV, 2-3 yards, pulling would open up huge gaps in your line. However, in my offense our linemen are foot to foot. There are no splits and with shoulder width stances and the gap left by a pulling youth football lineman is 1 yard or less.

The defenders do not know the snap count, so any offensive lineman has an advantage over the defense as far as getting a head start on the snap. We also have all of our offensive linemen with the exception of the center, off of the line of scrimmage. This allows them to pull much easier and allows our other offensive lineman to easily cut off any penetration by any defender by taking a simple short step to the inside, something we rep every day in football practice with our linemen. Since our backs also know the count and the defenders don’t, our backs are usually long gone by the time a blitzing defender gets into our backfield. In fact, despite playing against every standard and junk-yard defense known to man in the last 6 seasons, our first team offense has had just one negative yardage play.

Even if there is a defender right over your pulling linemen, a very simple blocking rule like GOD; inside gap, on, down will put another offensive lineman on the defender covering your pulling player. If a defense decides to cover everyone on your offensive line or go to a GAM type defense, then don’t pull. There would not be a defender to block if your puller made it to the point of attack anyway with those defenses. If a defense blitzes a linebacker he is most often on or close enough to the line of scrimmage to be blocked by the rule or legally cut or crab blocked. If the blitzer comes from a spot off the line of scrimmage there is no way he will be quick enough to make the play, unless he is a Lawrence Taylor clone. We love it when our opponents play those type of defenses, we don’t have to bother with pulling, will still have a double team at the point of attack and will block the unblocked defensive lineman with a kick-out block by one of our backs.

If you have an extremely slow and unatheletic lineman that has problems covering gaps for pulling linemen, have them make a simple but effective crab block. See the posts on crab blocking for more details on that here in the tips section. Gaps left by pulling linemen are not a problem in youth football if your team uses the above techniques.

Developing Aggression in Youth Football Players, the Splatter Tackling Drill

Splatter Tackling Drills

We are huge fans of splatter tackling and splatter tackling drills when you are coaching youth football. These drills are great ways to ease your kids into full contact. We think it is imperative to prefect blocking and tackling technique at the youth level. Too many youth football coaches just don’t spend enough time or demand the perfection of detail that makes kids great blockers and tacklers.

Ruining the Potential of Good Kids

Despite what many youth coaches think, most kids aren’t born to be great blockers and tacklers, they are made. Unfortunately there are a bunch of kids out there that have the potential to be very good football players that are ruined by their youth football coach. These coaches rush kids into contact before they have perfected perfect blocking and tackling technique with their players WITHOUT contact. Too many kids get rushed into full speed blocking and tackling in space well before they are ready for it. That’s a coaching problem, not a kid problem. Coach is too busy trying to quickly see who is studs are, before giving his average and weaker kids a chance to develop the skills and confidence to be able to survive and compete in a full speed tackling or blocking drill in space.

Splatter Drills

In our book «Winning Youth Football a Step-by- Step Plan», we detail exactly how you can do it. One of the key steps is using «Splatter» drills. The Splatter Drill lets a player learn how to accelerate through contact without experiencing the consequence of a reciprocal blow. This drill also allows the player to take another player to the ground without a hard ground impact. This drill can also help you drill the correct landmarks for feet placement, head placement and hip roll.

For the player playing the role of the «patsy», the player providing zero resistance to the block or tackle and is getting slammed into a soft landing matt on every rep, the job doesn’t sound like much fun. But what I’m hearing from coaches all across the country is that their kids love to be the one holding the shield and getting slammed onto the landing pad every play. I thought our kids were weird, they all want to play the pasty, but I guess everyones kids are as odd as mine.

Problems With Splatter Drills

One of the things that always bothered me about this drill was the fact you need to have 4 long dummys to use as landing pads. Well at about $100 each, that is $400, out of the reach of many youth programs. Lugging these dummies around is a big hassle as well. Then once on the field, you have just one landing pad for 25 kids. As most of you know I’m not a fan of having kids standing in long lines, so that means whenever we do splatter drills. It is only part of a circuit, it is never a drill we want to do on it’s own, even if we need it.

The Solution, Tony Holland to the Rescue

My good friend Tony Holland from Maryland solved this one. He went to Walmart and bought several camping air mattresses for $65 each. Each mattress is big enough to be a landing pad all by itself. These things roll up into a small box too, so you don’t need a pickup to lug them around. Tony bought a small electric air compressor for $20 that not only inflates each mattress in less than 2 minutes, it also sucks the air out as well when you are finished. Tony has several of these mattresses so his kids can all do Splatter Drills at the same time and in much smaller groups. He didn’t have to repair a single leak and he said all of his are good to go for next season.
