Pennsylvania Football – An American High School Tradition Featuring the Ridley Raiders

First and foremost, my hat goes off to each coach, mentor, administrator and stakeholder that has contributed to the student athlete in the past as well as those who continue to partake in the lives of student athletes and communities in America. The time and effort that is put into coaching is tremendous in terms of X’s and O’s, and most importantly, the student athlete’s personal life, involving people, places, and situations. Coaches are truly role models and have an impact on the lives of the players. LONG LIVE THE COACH!

Pennsylvania football is known as one of America’s greatest traditions. Such players as Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Joe Montana and dozens of other renowned players have established themselves, the state, and others as the «cradle» and backbone of American high school football. In addition, Pennsylvania Coaches like Curry (Berwick), Bernat (Owen J. Roberts), Waller (Ridley), Pettine (CBWest) etc… represented what leadership of student athletes should be on as well as off of the field. I have personally encountered Coach Hank Bernat, more ways than one, and believe me he is a COACH! These motivational, inspiring, dedicated, and strong wielded mentors sought to make sure that the student athlete endured successfully in education and in the community. The coaches of Penn’s Woods (Pennsylvania) ensured that each player understood the realities of life and that it was imperative to become a productive citizen in America. The greatest all round coach from Pennsylvania that people have told me about and I have witnessed in terms of leadership, and emphasizing the try and care mentality was the one and only Jerry Sandusky. Need I say more?

In many unsuccessful as well as accomplished football programs in 21st century high school communities, educators and coaches are pressured to make positive results of winning whether by way of undermining or acquiring the true support, preparation and education within the schooling realm. The question remains, what is the intent of the coach? Is he using the student athlete as a pawn for his future success, or does he care about the student first? This has a profound impact on the integrity of his or her mission and most importantly the student athlete! This environment can create an unsound culture as well as a production of poor values internally within a schooling society and is infiltrated into the community and American society. This negative domino effect is the end result of not just losing in the game of life, but instills a stale atmosphere within the schooling institution in terms of sport and other social aspects.

THE RIDLEY RAIDERS

A reminder, not an introduction, the Ridley Raiders continue to be Pennsylvania’s team and one of America’s traditional football teams. Established in 1934, the Ridley football program reached the 500 win mark «30» years faster than any other program in the state! Furthermore, as a testament to their tradition and success, the Ridley Raiders have the best winning percentage in Pennsylvania as well as establishing the greatest winning percentage in the nation at 25 percent! A schooling society of tradition backed and supported by all stakeholders including the students, educators, administrators, and an outstanding «blue collar» community. The fans consisting of traditional family and others who are new to the community, buy into the «blue collar » work ethic and the town and are dedicated to the students, community, coaches and the team. This action is somewhat not heard of in many schooling societies in various educational high school realms. This is what makes the Ridley congregation a winner within a geographical area (Philadelphia) that is not just a tradition for football, but is the foundation of America’s history and birth place (Declaration of Independence).

Stakeholders across American high schools and post secondary education should emphasize the successes of the student athlete first and the money, fame, as well as aspirations to be successful may fall in line if it was meant to be! Take care of the student athlete! Just ask such higher educational coaches and motivators as Joe Paterno, Jerry Sandusky, Jackie Sherrill, Steve Spurrier, Bobby Bowden, R.C. Slocum, Don Nehlen, Bo Schinbeckler, Tom Osborne, Paul Bryant and many others who continue or have motivated and taught the student athlete to be strong productive citizens on and off of the field. HAIL TO THE RIDLEY RAIDERS!

Tips To Clean Your Football Boots

Have you got a pair of football boots? If so, you should take the right steps to clean them or they may not stand the test of time. We have put together some tips to help you clean your boots the right way. Read on.

Step 1: After you have come back home, loosen the laces and then remove the boots from your feet. Now, hold your boots and knock them with each other to remove the loose mud. Use a stiff brush to brush the sides of the boots.

Step 2: get a damp cloth and soak it in lukewarm water. Now, squeeze the cloth and then rub your boots with it to remove any mud from the shoes. Some mud may be stuck in the tiny grooves. You can remove it with a toothbrush.

Step 3: Get an old newspaper page and scrunch it up. Now, put it inside your boots before you store them for a long-term. This will help your boot stay in the same shape. Aside from this, the newspaper also helps your boots dry quickly as the paper will absorb water. Put your boots in a safe and dry place so that they don’t take much time to dry completely.

Step 4: Once your boots are dry, you can use a petroleum jelly or Vaseline to grease the studs. Another benefit of the petroleum jelly is that it will save the studs from rust increasing the lifespan of your shoes.

Step 5: to maintain the color of your football boots, you should make it a habit to polish them on a regular basis. After 24 hours, you can apply natural leather oil on your boots to save the leather from water damage.

Some Dos and don’ts

Some people kick their boots at the heel. While this is tempting, you should never do it as it may cause some serious damage.

Never use a wire brush on your boots as it is too harsh. Instead, you should use a brush made from a natural, soft material.

For cleaning your cleats, don’t use a cleaning agent that contains harsh chemicals. The best idea is to use lukewarm water and a clean piece of clothing.

Putting your cleats near the radiator for faster drying is not recommended either. Doing so will stiffen your cleats making them weaker.

Overuse of jelly on the studs is not a good idea either as it may loosen the studs or cut down on the friction.

After each use, you should wash your cleats. This is a good habit. Besides, don’t discard your old toothbrushes. Instead, keep them somewhere in your home and then use them for cleaning your football cleats.

So, if you have got a pair of football cleats, you should use these tips to maintain them. Keep in mind that replacing your shoes is not a piece of cake. You have to spend a good deal of money on each replacement. So, take care of your shoes so that they can last longer. Hope it will help.

How Do I Stop the Speed Running Back in Youth Football?

Speed is king in all sports, but especially in Pop Warner football. If you have a player that cannot be caught, you will have a great season without having to do much coaching. If you are facing a team with great speed then you need a game plan.

How your speed matches up versus their speed will dictate how you design your defensive game plan. You have to devise a scheme to contain, or at the minimum harness, the quickest player in the opposing team.

I have become a big believer in no surprises as a coach. I believe using intense scouting, with complete reports so you have an idea of what you will be facing. A complete scouting report is your most valuable tool.

As a coach preparing the game plan for the upcoming opponent, the first inquiry a defensive coordinator must ask himself is who is the fastest player on the other team? You will set up your defensive backs and ends based on this guide. There goal is to get their speed back outside your containment defender so he can run free down the sidelines.

Your primary defensive strategy must be not to allow this to happen. You must convey to your players that they need to contain the speed running back. By using team defense, you will have your containment players force their fast running back towards the middle of field and back to where you other defenders are. You can minimize the speed advantage by forcing him to run to the middle of your defense. It sound easy, but trust me it isn’t. It is not impossible and with the right preparation you should be able to harness the speed back.

When designing your defensive scheme, line up your defensive ends and corner backs at a minimum of 4-5 yards closer to the sidelines than you would in your base set. This will make it hard to run around the ends and get to the outside freely. This helps the ends see the play as it develops. When a running back sees a defender, his instinct is to run the other way, even if it is back in traffic.

The opposing offensive coordinator rapidly gets frustrated and has to make over his game plan live while the game is in progress. Even if you have a back up plan in place, it is hard to adjust on the fly.

I have witnessed quite a few opposing coaches enter half time, yelling at his speed back, blaming the kid when he, as the coach, has no idea what is happening.

In conclusion the best way to negate speed is to make your opposition run to the middle. The other reward is you are making the speed back go where you have more defenders to help make the tackle.

George Steinbrenner Coached Ohio State Football With Woody Hayes & Won a National Championship

George Steinbrenner is famously known the world over as the owner of the New York Yankees but very few people realize that in the 1950s George Steinbrenner actually served as an assistant coach under legendary Buckeye icon Woody Hayes at Ohio State University (OSU for short). In fact, George was even part of the 1954 Ohio State national championship team that went undefeated.

The New York Yankees organization that Steinbrenner has owned for decades has been valued by Forbes magazine as a $1.5 billion organization which makes it one of the five most valuable sports teams in the world across all sports. Before making his fortune in the family shipping business he lived a somewhat pedestrian life that included college, a stint in the Air Force, marriage, and a brief spell as an assistant football coach at Ohio State. In some regards George Steinbrenner has had an almost Forest Gump type life that has involved playing on his college football team, joining the armed forces, falling in love, making a fortune, numerous chance encounters with historically iconic figures, and a variety of unique business ventures.

Born in Rocky River, Ohio on the northern edge of the state the area that is now an affluent suburb of Cleveland is the area where George grew up before attending a military school in northern Indiana. After graduating from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1952 and spending a couple of years in the Air Force based in Columbus, Ohio at Lockbourne Air Force Base the Ohio native decided to stay in the area following his honorable discharge in 1954. Over the next two years Steinbrenner earned a master’s degree in physical education from nearby Ohio State University.

While doing graduate work at Ohio State George Steinbrenner signed on to help the football team as a graduate assistant where he happened to coach under legendary college football coach Woody Hayes. During the one season that George was with the Buckeyes the team went undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record that included a 20-7 Rose Bowl victory over the University of Southern California (USC) on January 1, 1955.

By capping off a perfect season with a sound Rose Bowl victory Woody Hayes, George Steinbrenner, and the rest of the Ohio State Buckeyes edged out number two ranked UCLA to capture the second football national championship for the Buckeyes ever. In addition to the seven World Series victories (1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) that George Steinbrenner has been a part of as an owner of the New York Yankees since January 3, 1973 the man who was born back on July 4, 1930 can also claim a college football national championship from the 1954 season with iconic College Football Hall of Fame coach Woody Hayes.

Muscles Used in Throwing a Football – Lower Body More Important Than Upper Body

There is a myth in football training, especially among younger athletes, in regards to where the power comes from when throwing a football. Many mistakenly believe that the upper body muscles, those of the shoulders and arm, are the primary muscles used in making a deep, powerful, accurate throw. However, nothing could be further from the truth, as the most powerful quarterbacks in the NFL and college football utilize their lower bodies to become stronger when throwing.

The first muscle group that young players need to be aware of is their thigh muscles. These include the quadriceps, hamstrings, adductors, and abductors, among many others. The calves should not be ignored, either, but the upper thigh muscles are the most important. These muscles are used to plant the foot in the ground and establish a strong base of support for the throw. Force is typically put into the ground to generate a throw, and the leg muscles are what put that force into the ground to begin with. Without strong leg muscles, that force can not be generated.

Once the front foot is planted, the next muscle group involved is the hips. The glutes, primarily the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medius, are used to generate the twisting motion that creates the power to throw the football. The hips are the most dense area of muscle in the body, and can generate tremendous amounts of force, as can easily be seen with world-class sprinters who have extremely developed hip muscles. Football quarterbacks also need that development in order to make a long, powerful throw.

The final area of musculature that young football players must take into consideration is the abdominals. The abdominal muscles are made up primarily of the rectus abdominis, which are located on the front of the body; the obliques, which are located on the sides of the torso; and the transversus abdominis, which crisscross the torso in a diagonal fashion. These muscles are not used to generate force so much as to transfer it, and transfer it mostly in a diagonal manner. This can be seen when a quarterback puts his left foot forward before throwing with his right hand. The legs and hips generate the force, which is transferred through the abdomen and into the chest, shoulder, and arm.

It is the abs that complete the chain from the lower to upper body and make for a powerful throw of the football. Unfortunately, many football strength and conditioning programs spend far too much time focusing on the chest and triceps, in particular. While these muscles are important when throwing, they are used mostly for stability and accuracy, rather than power and speed. A throw that is accurate, stable, and slow is more likely to be intercepted than one that is powerful, accurate, stable, and fast.

How Do I Stop My Flag Football Quarterback From Throwing Interceptions?

We received a recent question from a fellow youth football coach.  He coaches the older level players in the 6th through 8th grade level and is having problems with his quarterback turning the ball over via the interception.  The question is copied below as we received it and our response will follow below the question.

I’m the coach of a youth flag football team (11-14 year old’s)…our quarterback has a great arm, but he always finds a way to throw an interception. Are there any drills or tips that would help/prevent him from throwing so many interceptions??  The basic rules of our league state the defense is allowed to rush our quarterback from 7 yards away, and we play with no offensive line.

Our first question would be what kind of an offense are you running?  All passing offenses need multiple options to be successful.  That is the main reason having a passing game at the youth football level is so difficult.  You need to be running a scheme with hot reads (meaning if there is a blitz the receiver runs a certain route, like a slant) and check-down receivers as a safety valve in case all of the primary receivers are covered.

You need to have set routes as well as timing routes.  If the quarterback is throwing too many interceptions, and there is no offensive line, then the problem is the quarterback and receiver are not on the same page.  Video tape your games and show both players the reads you want them to make based on how the defense is playing them.  Maybe your offense is not reading the coverage right.  Some man under, zone deep coverages can be tricky for the young players to read correctly.

Review the tape and I’m sure you’ll be able to pinpoint the problem.
