The NFL and Domestic Violence

Violence is a trait of many NFL players. Let’s face it, football is a violent sport and it encourages violent behavior. Unfortunately, what football does not do is teach players how to behave non-violently to problems off the field, particularly when it comes to relationship problems.

This violent behavior begins when boys start playing football as children. The boys are taught to behave tough and aggressive by their coaches, teammates, and even their parents. Boys are taught to use their body and strength to tackle competing players. Making a good «hit» is encouraged. This positively reinforces boys to behave aggressively. The boys are taught to be strong, to be unafraid, and to be a man. The name of the game is to be tough, dominant and show no weaknesses.

Unfortunately, the boys playing football are not taught that this behavior is acceptable only on the field. As boys who play football reach adolescence and adulthood, they have learned how to use aggressive and dominant behavior to win. It is this behavior that can lead to domestic violence against women.

Football never teaches players how to communicate with a woman. Is this the fault of football coaches or should parents take responsibility? The correct answer is that both should take responsibility. If you are going to reward a child for behaving violently while playing football, you must teach that child how to control their behavior when not playing football. I believe that from childhood all the way through the NFL, football players must be taught how to control aggressive and violent behavior. They need to be taught that violence off the field is unacceptable, especially towards women.

The divorce rate among NFL players is very high. Players bring the violence and aggressive energy they have on the field home. After practice or a game, a player’s adrenaline is flowing and they may have a lot of extra energy. If the player was in a big game that his team lost, this can increase the likelihood of violence at home. When you take the environment of football where problems between players are sometimes solved in scuffles and pushing each other around, this behavior becomes second nature to players. In football, if somebody gets in your face, you push them away. However, there is a huge difference between pushing a strong 275 lb player out of your face and pushing a 130 lb woman out of your face. What seems like nothing between players can be deadly when used toward a woman, and much of the time, it is done as a reflex from years of being physical with other players. That is why it is so important that from childhood on, football players are taught how to control their behavior off the field.

The NFL does have programs to teach players how to behave off the field. The problem is that by the time a player reaches the NFL, it is almost too late to teach behavior control. By this time the player has spent more than half of his life being taught to be physical and aggressive. This behavior is now so deeply embedded in the player’s mind that it is very difficult to change. That is why it is so important that football coaches and parents teach these young boys how to behave off the field and to be gentle with women.

If you are a parent reading this article, please talk to your son about violence and that violent behavior towards other people, especially women, is wrong. Yes, physical and aggressive behavior is OK on the football field with other players, but that is the only place it is acceptable. Off the field, players must be taught to control their aggressive behavior and use their mind to solve problems, not their body.

Brett Favre’s Backups – Through The Years

Often times when a great player plays quarterback for one franchise for a very long time it is interesting to look at who played backup for him. Who developed into a starting quarterback of their own? Who had started at other places but was winding their career down here? Here we look at Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre’s backups through the years.

1992: Brett Comes To The Green Bay Packers

Backup: Don Majkowski (University of Virginia)

Majkowski had started for the Packers earlier in his career and later on would start games for the Indianapolis Colts, he would also appear in a few games for the Detroit Lions.

1993: Brett’s 2nd Year

Backup: Ty Detmer (Brigham Young University)

Detmer won the Heisman Trophy playing QB for the BYU Cougars and after backing up in Green Bay in 1993 and 1995 he would go on to start games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996 and 1997. He would also see playing time with San Francisco, Cleveland, and Detroit.

1994: Brett’s 3rd Year

Backup: Mark Brunell (University of Washington)

Probably the quarterback that played behind Favre and went on to the most success (so far), Mark Brunell would later start games for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Redskins. Brunell made numerous Pro Bowl appearances, and in 1996 he led the league in total passing yards. Brunell also currently ranks in the all-time top 25 in the following categories: Passing attempts, passing completions, and passing yards.

1995: Brett’s 4th Year

Backup: Ty Detmer – See Above

Backup: Jim McMahon (Brigham Young University)

McMahon had already been a starting quarterback for most of his career and had won a Super Bowl with the 1985 Chicago Bears. He would also be a sometime starter with San Diego, Philadelphia, and Minnesota. He also spent time with the Arizona Cardinals briefly before spending his last two years in the league backing up in Green Bay.

Backup: T.J. Rubley (University of Tulsa)

Rubley had starting experience with the Los Angeles Rams in 1993 but his time with the 1995 Packers would be his last in the NFL.

1996: Brett and the Packers win the Super Bowl

Backup: Jim McMahon – See Above

Backup: Doug Pederson (NE Louisiana)

Pederson would go on to see time as the starting quarterback with Philadelphia and Cleveland in 1999 and 2000 respectively before returning to be the backup in Green Bay again for the 2001 through 2004 seasons.

1997: A Super Bowl Loss

Backup: Doug Pederson – See Above

Backup: Steve Bono (UCLA)

Bono had prior starting quarterback experience for both San Francisco and Kansas City. Earlier in his career he had backup experience with both Minnesota and Pittsburgh, and after this one season in Green Bay he would spend two more years in the league (backing up for the Rams and the Carolina Panthers) before retiring.

1998: Brett’s 7th Year and Mike Holmgren’s last year as the Packers head coach.

Backup: Doug Pederson – See Above

1999: Brett’s 8th Year and the one and only season Ray Rhodes was the head coach.

Backup: Matt Hasselbeck (Boston College)

Hasselbeck would go on to play for Holmgren in Seattle and lead the Seahawks to the Super Bowl, only to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

2000: Brett’s 9th Year and Mike Sherman’s first year as head coach.

Backup: Matt Hasselbeck – See Above

2001: Brett’s 10th Year

Backup: Doug Pederson – See Above

2002: Brett’s 11th Year

Backup: Doug Pederson – See Above

2003: Brett’s 12th Year

Backup: Doug Pederson – See Above

2004: Brett’s 13th Year

Backup: Doug Pederson – See Above

Backup: Craig Nall (Northwestern State)

Nall would throw for four touchdowns in his only action in the NFL during this season. He would go on to backup Favre in 2005 before spending one final year as a backup in Buffalo.

Backup: J.T. O’Sullivan (University of California-Davis)

O’Sullivan saw no action for Green Bay other than two late game kneel downs, he didn’t see any playing action at all in 2005 or 2006, but has gotten on the field for the Detroit Lions during the 2007 season.

2005: Brett’s 14th Year

Backup: Craig Nall – See Above

Backup: Aaron Rodgers (University of California)

Rodgers is the current backup for Brett Favre and has been labeled the heir-apparent to take over after he retires ever since the Packers drafted him.

2006: Brett’s 15th Year and Mike McCarthy’s first season as head coach of the Packers.

Backup: Aaron Rodgers – See Above

Backup: Ingle Martin

Martin made it into the game for the final game of the year and handed the ball off one time and took two kneel downs.

2007: Brett’s 16th Year

Backup: Aaron Rodgers – See Above

There you have it, Brett Favre’s backups through the years. This is by no means definitive and focuses primarily on the quarterbacks who not only were on the roster but made it into the game at some point during the season.

A few observations:

Twice Favre had backups from small colleges in Louisiana (Favre’s home state), with Doug Pederson being from Northeast Louisiana and Craig Nall being from Northwestern State.

The Packers have had two different ex-BYU quarterbacks backup Brett (Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer). The quarterback who spent the most years as Brett Favre’s backup was Doug Pederson and he did it in two separate stints with the team (1996-1998 and 2001-2004).

Brett Favre himself was drafted by the Falcons, only to play sparingly and then be traded to the Packers in 1992. In 1993 the Packers drafted Mark Brunell who played sparingly for them and was then traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars where he went on to star for many years. He is one of the most durable quarterbacks the league will ever see, and these were the guys who backed him up.

The Favorite Receivers of Dallas Cowboys Great Troy Aikman

Troy Aikman is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and is also one of the most popular quarterbacks ever to play the position for the Dallas Cowboys, and that is saying something. During his 12 year career in the National Football League, all of it spent with the Cowboys, he played in a number of big games and put up some great performances. Who were this great quarterback’s favorite receivers though during that time?

The player to catch the most touchdown passes from Troy Aikman was Michael Irvin who hauled in 49 touchdown receptions from him during his career.

Second on the list is popular tight end Jay Novacek who caught 20 of Troy Aikman’s touchdown passes.

Alvin Harper joined the Dallas Cowboys two seasons after Aikman came to the team and he ranks third on this list of the quarterback’s favorite receivers with 16 touchdown catches.

Fullback Daryl «Moose» Johnston sits in fourth place with the 13 career touchdown receptions thrown to him by Troy Aikman.

The fifth most touchdown passes thrown by Aikman went to legendary running back Emmitt Smith who caught 11 of them during the time they were teammates.

It goes without saying that Troy Aikman had a great career. You can’t get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame without putting together a career that stands among the best of all time. It is interesting though that of the top five touchdown receivers that he threw to, only two of them were wide receivers. He played in some memorable games, including Super Bowls, and was a truly great quarterback. Anyone who doesn’t think so just needs to ask Michael Irvin, Jay Novacek, Alvin Harper, Daryl Johnston, and Emmitt Smith.

The Great World Cup Germany 2006

The 2006 FIFA World Cup (officially titled 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, sometimes referred to as the Football World Cup) finals are scheduled to take place in Germany between 9 June and 9 July 2006. Qualification for the tournament is now complete, with all 32 competing teams confirmed. The 2006 finals are the 18th to be contested.

A total of 12 German cities have been selected to host the World Cup final tournament. The stadium capacities shown are all seated capacities. Many of the stadiums have higher capacities for German domestic football matches as some of the seats are replaced with terraces.Starting from Germany 2006, the winner of the past World Cup had to qualify for the Finals. Only the host nation qualifies automatically from 2006 on.

In the qualification process for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the six FIFA confederations were allocated a share of the 32 spots available on the basis of the strength of their teams. The final distribution was as follows:Europe – represented by UEFA : 51 teams competing for 13 places (Germany qualified automatically as host nation for a total of 14 places) ;Africa – 51 teams;South America -10 teams;Asia – 39 teams;North, Central American and Caribbean -34 teams;Oceania – 12 teams.

For the first time ever, the defending champion (Brazil) does not qualify automatically. The hosts (Germany) will retain their automatic spot. In 1934, the defending champions (Uruguay) declined to participate and the hosts (Italy) had to qualify, but in the tournaments between 1938 and 2002 (inclusive), the hosts and the defending champions had automatic berths.

The original distribution of places between the six confederations called for Oceania to be given one full spot in the final 32; however, this idea was seen as giving Australia a virtually certain place in the finals, being by far the strongest footballing nation in their region. This decision was reconsidered in June 2003 and the previous distribution of places between Oceania and South America was restored.

The main surprises in European qualification at World Cup Germany were the absences of 2002 third-place finishers Turkey (eliminated by Switzerland after a momentous playoff), 2004 European Champions Greece (eliminated by the Ukraine), and established sides Denmark (eliminated by the Ukraine as well), Russia (eliminated by Portugal), and Belgium (eliminated by Serbia-Montenegro and Spain). In Africa, 2002 quarter-finalists Senegal (eliminated by Togo) and established sides South Africa, Cameroon, and Nigeria (eliminated, respectively, by Ghana, C?te d’Ivoire, and Angola) unexpectedly missed the trip to the Finals. The other zones saw no major upsets. While representing Oceania, from the beginning of 2006 Australia is part of the Asian Confederation, and will represent Asia in following World Cups.

If teams are even on points at the end of group play, the tied teams will be ranked as follows:greater number of points obtained in matches between the tied teams, goal difference in matches between the tied teams, greater number of goals scored in matches between the tied teams, goal difference in all group matches, greater number of goals scored in all group matches,a play-off on neutral ground, with extra time and penalties if necessary (in qualifying),drawing of lots (at the final event). This is a change from the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where total goal differential was the first tiebreaker.

Thirty-two years after the last football World Cup in Germany, the 2006 FIFA World Cup will again take place in Germany. For the first time after the reunification of both German states, the entire world will look to the New Germany, situated at the heart of Europe.

Specializing at a Young Age Will Stunt Your Growth, Not Improve It

According to USA Hockey, colleges and universities all across the nation are recruiting talented and skilled ice hockey players before they are even starting high school.  Verbal commitments are being made between prospects and perennial powerhouses like University of Wisconsin.  Talented players who do not want to take the college route are opting for the major junior system in Canada and then going pro at the young age of 18 or 19.  There is an increasing number of very young players in the National Hockey League, with a handful of them being made captain of their professional squads like Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby.  The emergence of young athletes assuming key roles in the elite circles of Division 1 and professional sports makes it appear to younger players that specializing is the way to go.  Ice Hockey is not the only sport identifying talent at unusually young ages.  Major football universities are finding players just beginning high school.  A lot can be said about the physical and mental development of an athlete in high school and college.  Schools like Yale University will not consider a young recruit for their varsity sports because they realize how much can change mentally for a teenager between the ages of 14 and 18.  For them, academic integrity is as important as athletic performance.  Therefore, making a guarantee four years early is not appealing to them.  They want to see where that candidate will be down the road before they make any commitments.  What happened to waiting around and shopping for the best?  We don’t elect Presidents 4 years before they are to take the oath, why should we choose what jersey an athlete will wear before they get there?  If you keep the competition to play close to the actual time they will be doing so, the road to get there will be more about the process and development.

Ten years ago, it was thought that athletes needed more time to develop and gain the competitive edge.  In ice hockey, post graduate programs (PG years) at prep schools and junior teams were common staples to get noticed by competitive college hockey programs.  It was thought that in order to have the edge, you needed the time to develop physically and mentally as well as gain the experience of playing with other like-minded athletes.  When you knew you had a long road ahead of you to make the college and professional ranks, specializing in your sport at 12 was not the smartest thing.  Parents, coaches, and experts worried that applying too much pressure at a young age to perform and excel would cause players to burn out prematurely.

Performance development coaches like myself believe that while players should focus primarily on two sports, that their programs should incorporate skills and abilities required to perform well in as many as 10 other sports or activities.  Even if you do not play baseball, ice hockey players who have the ability to go to a batting cage and hit a high percentage of the pitches.  Hockey players who can play baseball well will have better reaction times on the ice and will be better able to react to pucks in flight from a high shot or at fielding a bad pass.  Likewise, playing soccer is great developmentally for a budding ice hockey player because a lot of very skilled players are very good at carrying and handling the puck with their feet.  Whether your main sport is baseball or ice hockey, you can learn a lot from playing other sports like tennis, soccer, football, etc.

The spectrum is vast regarding what parents think their children should do.  Some want their children to be like Sidney Crosby and will force them to specialize at 8 years old and others want their kids to just have fun and will them do anything they want for however long they want.  Both approaches are bad.  Specializing or being aloof is bad.  The key is to keep the intensity, attention, encouragement, and vigor high with the expectation and pressure low.  Young athletes should be taught discipline, passion, a love for training and the sport, and heart.  The road to intercollegiate and professional sports is long.  The people who make it and stay there are the ones who love the unglamorous aspects, the long road trips, the sweat, the low pay (the pay for most professional athletes is not like ARod), the unforgiving schedule, and the inherent uncertainty that comes from a profession that is so fluid – where one day the best team wants you and the day the other team that will look at you is the farm club of the worst team.

Success comes from a love in what you do, whatever it is.  The day it becomes work is the day you know it might be time to consider a new path.  Athletes who play for the glory will be in store for a rude awakening.  The athletes who can weather adversity and overcome it through hard work and staying focused are the ones you know really love what they do.  The turnaround for the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball team shows outstanding determination, will, and passion for improving and bettering themselves.  They did not worry about playing as well as the perennial powerhouse teams like the Boston Red Sox.  They played the game the way they knew best and defined their run to the World Series their way and on their terms.  The way they went from the worst team in professional major league baseball to the World Series runner-up is an example of how individual athletes should approach their development.  You cannot go out there and just be in it for the win.  Unfortunately, the raw desire is not enough to get you there.  You need to be willing and able to put in the unappreciated and under valued hard work.  By doing so, you put yourself in a better position to start doing well.

As a sports development coach, I am useless to the person who just wants to play in a recreational league and get the fanfare when they score.  When someone is ready to work hard, put in long hours, and sweat – I am the perfect person for them.  I will help them get to where they want.  What I do has no glamour, other than the satisfaction in myself, knowing that I had a role in helping an athlete demonstrate their capabilities to an audience.  I do what I do because I have a love and passion for sports.

The key to professional bliss is to specialize in a commitment to working hard.  Whatever else you do to get ahead will come after.  Do not worry about what nods you are getting at 14 to play college sports.  Keep your head down and stay focused on getting better.  A lot can happen in high school.  If you keep your options open at 14, you will have more to fall back on when you are 18.

If you specialize at 14 in football and it does not work out for you, there will be nothing else for you to fall back on.  If you play several sports and perform well in a couple of them, if one doesn’t lead to a paycheck or fame, maybe the other will.  The more options you have the less pressure you will feel on you to excel on at one, thereby making it more enjoyable.  Nobody wants to think that everything hinges on how you do in one thing.

Keep your options open and have fun, but remember you will not improve without putting in hard work.  So decide what your priorities are and then go from there.  If you don’t want to sweat or do the necessary things to improve your game, then don’t expect to play at the next level.  There is nothing wrong with playing pick-up games.  You have to be honest with yourself regarding your skill level and desire to put in the time required to make it.  Sidney Crosby, Eli Manning, Tom, Brady, Michael Jordan, and like company did not get to where they did just by coasting through life.  They assessed their abilities and accordingly set their mind on where they wanted to go.  Once they did that, they worked tirelessly to make sure they got there.  That due diligence is why they all became standouts in the professional arena.

The key thing to take away from this article is that you need more determination than skill.  And more importantly, you need more love than determination.  Therefore, you need more love than skill.  If you do not enjoy what you do, it will not matter how much skill you have because you will not want to do it anymore.  Being focused is different than specializing.  Play a lot of sports.  Stay active in many different things.  Do it because you love it.  You can decide later which one will let you do it in college or professionally.  You will benefit more from playing other sports and training for those sports than you will spending all that time training for one sport.  My program is so effective because despite your focus, I expose you to movements and drills common to other activities, thereby making you a more complete and well rounded athlete.

Stay tuned for more articles by DSWAthletes, owned and managed by Derrick Wong.  We write about all things sports.  We want to help you get to wherever you want to go and enjoy both the process and the outcome.  We will help you stay focused and in great shape.

Quarterback Training DVDs

I am a former NFL Quarterback that played for the Buffalo Bills and today I want to talk about Quarterback training. Specificially about Quarterback DVDs.

One DVD that quarterbacks and parents seem to forget when looking for quarterback training dvds is the mental aspect. Especially How to read pass coverage defenses!

Football is a violent game that can result in injury, if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s why the game is as much mental as it is physical, and that’s especially true in the case of quarterbacks.

NFL quarterbacks and high level college quarterbacks have gotten to where they are by practicing fundamental methods and techniques over and over.

They have also reached the professional level because they have good heads on their shoulders and know the plays inside and out. If you listen to some of the plays called at the NFL level they are almost a short sentence.

Hear is an example.

Gun Right, trips right, train, z-mo zigzag, fly corner, y post, x yo-yo, max protection.

Why are we telling you this? Because the work ethic and dedication and mental skills that all good quarterbacks possess were learned at a young age.

That’s why when you look to buy your next Quarterback Training DVD make sure you consider some on how to read defenses. For more information on where to get a QB How To Read Defense DVD go to the website information below.

We don’t promise any instructional products will result in an NFL quarterback, but we can promise that they will teach what it takes to start on that path.

Types of Garden Gnomes and Their Advantages

Garden gnomes have been around for over 2 centuries now. They began to appear as garden decorations in European countries in the early 1800’s. They were first introduced in Germany. People would decorate their gardens with these gnomes and they were thought to tend to the garden during the night. Since then these dwarf like statues have gained much popularity. They come in various designs and styles and are perfect for decorating your garden.

These statues are made of different materials and come in a number a number of colors adding life and a little amusement to your garden. Earlier these gnomes were made of materials like terra cotta and clay but recently have started being made of plastic. People believe that these statues take care of their garden and the earth. This is why they have gained so much popularity. These are also far cheaper than other garden statues and decorations. The fact that they are made of plastic makes them very durable. Earlier clay and terra cotta gnomes took much longer to manufacture as the paint and clay required a long time to mold. Plastic statues are far cheaper and much more durable than clay counterparts. They are mass produced in factories and most manufacturers are now shifting to plastic instead of clay and terra cotta.

They main advantage of plastic over clay is that these statues can be molded into to any shape with ease. You would find designs of simple gnomes where as some manufacturers have gone as far as making rappers out of these cute dwarfs. You could buy them in cute gardening positions or just buy the traditional dwarf which is starring back at you. Manufacturers have even started making all sorts of sporting gnomes. You could buy dwarfs with the theme of your favorite football team. You could even buy gnomes wear your favorite baseball players jersey. This has made a number of sports enthusiasts buy these for their gardens. You would even find these gnomes in bars where people would go to watch a football game.

Though there are a number of collectors that buy these products in clay, I personally suggest you buy a plastic one. A clay statue would probably cost anywhere between twenty to a hundred dollars. Most plastic gnomes usually cost anywhere between five to twenty dollars. You would find a number of websites that sell these products online. You would find plenty of designs to choose from. So make sure you go online today and buy one of these for your home.

How to Be an NFL Lineman

I am a retired NFL player and I was a lineman. In this article I am going to explain what you need to do to become a lineman in the NFL.

First of all, to be an NFL a lineman you must have heart and passion as this is the most important part of being a NFL lineman. Heart and passion for the game and winning is more important than size and strength. Good looks will not help you but looking mean will help (that’s a joke).

The average lineman is 6’0″ to 6’8″ tall and weighs 290 to 350 lbs and all NFL lineman fall into this range. If you are 5’8″ and 165 lbs, being an NFL lineman is not in your genes or your future. I have always felt that linemen are football’s blue collar workers. We perform the hard dirty work that must be done for the team to be successful but we almost never receive any glory. While quarterbacks and wide receivers get all the attention, we do all the hard hitting and our bodies take the most physical stress and damage.

To be an NFL lineman, you absolutely must work on your strength. While you are in high school and college, it is essential that you work continuously with strength coaches. There are three cores areas of the body that you must work on. These are your upper body, your midsection and your lower body. You should work very hard on these three core areas if you want to make it to the NFL. You also must work harder than everybody else. Getting into the NFL is extremely competitive. To make it to the NFL, you must work harder than everyone else. While natural talent is helpful, I have found that the players who make it to the NFL are almost always the players that work the hardest on and off the field to be the absolute best at their position.

Here are the field techniques you must master to be a successful lineman:

1. Work on and perfect your stance. You need to have a stance that gives you the most power and gives you the most speed at the point of attack.

2. Work on the speed of your take-off. Take-off speed for a lineman is extremely important because it is almost always the lineman that strikes first that has the advantage.

3. Work on staying low to the ground in your stance and take-off because the lower you are the more power and leverage you will generate. Also, when your center of gravity is low, it makes it easier for you to keep your balance and not be knocked over. Remember, the lowest player always wins.

4. Hand placement is extremely important and you should always focus on getting your hands on the breast plate of your opponent as this gives you more control and power over your opponent. You will find that the best linemen are the ones that have the best hand placement on their opponent.

5. You must work on your first step as a lineman. Your first step should always be only 6 inches because if your first step is too long, the advantage goes to your opponent and you don’t want that. So remember, keep the first step of your take-off short.

6. Learn to finish every play and never give up on a play until you hear the whistle blow. The best NFL players NEVER stop playing until the whistle blows.

And remember, it does not matter if you play defense or offense, lineman are all a part of the same family. Work hard and I hope to see you playing in the NFL.

What Is Finding Your Butkus And How Taking Action Is The Key Ingredient To Achieving Success

Have you ever had a feeling that became a thought, then, the thought became an obsession? Ever fallen in love, done something on a whim, or followed your gut?

Have you ever wondered what would you do, – who would you meet, where would you go, if you knew you could not fail? Napoleon Hill, in 1937 wrote, «thoughts are things,»- powerful things, when mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire; translate into riches and other material objects.»

Combine that thought, with the old adage «The person thinking about something is usually passed by someone doing something!» and you’ll begin to find your butkus – your true passion in life.

I had done something and now, almost by accident, I was in the middle of a whirlwind. The dream-like funnel dropped me in the corner office at One NFL Way, Mt. Laurel, New Jersey – it was NFL Films.

«Is this real? Why am I here?»

«Is that who I think it is?»

«Is that, what I think it is?»

Surely I would wake up from this dream. I had to! This couldn’t really be happening.

The corner office was Steve Sabol’s, the NFL legend. And no, it wasn’t a dream. We were arm and arm, as his staff took the celebratory picture.

Years before, many decades actually, I had been a football loving kid in British Columbia, Canada. I loved playing football and watching the NFL on TV, especially the highlight films. That’s where I first heard the voice and the felt presence of Steve Sabol. His films stirred my imagination. I loved the poetic slow motion images, thundering music and captivating story lines. As a fan, everything about NFL Films was bigger than life.

Being a fan of something is one thing, but how on earth did I get here in this office, with this man? Luck perhaps, heaven sent for certain, but it sure as hell wasn’t by accident!

During a moment of unplanned frustration I wrote a letter on a whim, then thought about it for a day and didn’t send it. In my life I have rarely vacillated on anything, but I sat on my letter for a week as I debated the pros and cons of sending it. Then one day I read a familiar statement again: «When you have a good idea – do it immediately!» I went to the post office and promptly mailed my letter.

A few weeks later a return post card showed up with a Bruno Nagurski stamp on it from NFL Films. The plain white, card stock paper had the NFL Films logo and a hand-written note:

BOB –

THANKS FOR THE DVD AND YOUR KIND WORDS ABOUT NFL FILMS!

IF WE HAVE ANOTHER TV SPECIAL ON DICK BUTKUS, AND ONE IS IN THE PLANNING STAGES RIGHT NOW, WE WILL DEFINITELY INCLUDE YOUR WORK AND YOUR STORY.

BEST STEVE

Eleven months later, almost to the day, my story won the 2008 Emmy Award for Outstanding Long Feature. With only desire and self-belief I had unconsciously followed Napoleon Hill’s teachings «thoughts are things,»- powerful things.

Learn to follow your dreams, be persistent with purposeful desire. Take action. When you do, you will find the thing, the part inside that is uniquely you. What you already know, right now, is the key that will unlock your dreams and desires.

Your dreams my not win you an Emmy Award, an Academy Award or any kind of an award, but when you take action, they will be answered. Stop thinking and start doing; become your own fan and you’ll find your unstoppable self!
