A True NFL Legend In Sport and Spirit: Curtis Martin

NFL football enthusiasts around the globe pride themselves in their team affinity, player statistics and championship aptitude each year. Most begin by proclaiming to their friends and family that their team is certain to make it to the post-season in brash fashion at the start of every season. It is something that most football fans have in common, even if the Super Bowl isn’t their goal, but being a.500 team is. Football fans love to discuss their teams and the players that march onto the field each week on their behalf. When player comparisons start flurrying amongst a crowd, especially where running backs are concerned, no smack talking session would be complete without mentioning the football legend that is Curtis Martin.

Curtis James Martin, Jr. was born and raised on the rough and tumble lower income streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was raised predominantly by a single mother who suffered unspeakable abuse at the hands of his father before he abandoned them both around the time Curtis reached an age of double digits. Despite the odds that faced her family, his hard-working mother saw to it that her son’s infectious smile, and friendly unassuming personality was not wasted on the streets. She transferred him to a high school where education was not only a priority, but an exact focus. Curtis Martin never touched a football, at least not in the form of organized play, until he was a senior in high school, which makes his story all that more remarkable to NFL football fans across the nation.

Football was a mere extra-curricular outlet for Curtis, at the urging of his mother. She knew that the less time he had to spend immersed in the horrific violence that befell him, the better off he would be. Football became that outlet, thanks to his tremendous natural abilities and talent that were not overlooked by his high school coach. After a single year playing practically every position on the squad, including quarterback, colleges were regaling him with offers from across the country.

In an effort to stay close to home, Curtis chose the University of Pittsburgh. With a lackluster college career plagued by various injuries, Curtis opted out of his red shirt availability and forewent what could have been a final year to entertain the NFL football scouts as an amateur. He declared his eligibility for the NFL draft in 1995 and slid into the very late third round before being chosen by New England. The Patriots would be the first to use Curtis’s speed, style and stamina to impress the NFL football world at large, and because of his success, Curtis would finally be able to get his mother into a comfortable living position going forward. The latter, he always explained, was his only determined success, which made him immediately likable to anyone who met him.

Curtis was a workhorse, winning his first rushing title in 1995, the same year he was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. One year later he joined his Patriot teammates in Super Bowl XXXI, losing to the Green Bay Packers by two touchdowns. In 1997 he became a free agent, and was traded to the New York Jets where he spent the balance of his career. His hard-working demeanor and exceptional aptitude for the game allowed him to play seven complete seasons for the Jets while only missing one game.

Curtis cemented his toughness into the history books after adding another rushing title to his dossier, complementing the five Pro Bowl selections, and All Pro assignments to match. Loved by many, and respected by all, Curtis never wavered in his smash mouth football skills, even late in his career. Nearly ten years after the start of what would become any illustrious existence in an NFL uniform, Curtis became the oldest player to win a rushing title at the age of 31. His reputation for excelling in a sport he never cared about as a kid landed him at fourth all-time in rushing yards in the NFL history books. It is certainly argued by many that if his knees were not chronically injured, he could have jumped to first on that esteemed list.

He is forever enshrined as a New York Jet, having his #28 jersey retired by the team in 2012, and enshrined to the rest of the leagues and its fans that same year when he was admitted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His induction speech served as a vivid reminder to everyone who loves football, and the man who ran the ball with such precision and expertise for all those years, that life, love and family are more important than anything else.

In pure Curtis Martin fashion, after describing his life in horrific detail, thanked the sport of football for making him the person he is today. Who he is today serves as a beacon of hope for youngsters around the country, thanks to the Curtis Martin Job Foundation that provides support and financial aid to single mothers, and a bevy of under-privileged individuals through numerous charities. Where there is heart, there is soul, and Curtis Martin developed both in extraordinary fashion.

Lance Franklin

Introduction and Early Life

Lance Franklin is a professional Australian Rules football player that currently plays for the Hawthorn Hawks Football Club. He was born on January 30, 1987 in Perth, West Australia; and is of indigenous Australian descent. Lance is about 1.96 meters tall, has a large frame and weighs about 101 kilograms. He is a very versatile utility player that plays in the centre half-forward positions as well as the midfield position too. He wears the jersey number 23 and is fondly called «Buddy». He used to play for Perth in Western Australia in his early football days from where he was drafted with the number 4 pick into the Australian Football League (AFL) by the Hawthorn Hawks F.C in the 2004 national AFL draft.

Early Professional Career

Before beginning his professional football career, Lance had played his early days representing Western Australia at the National Under 18 Carnival. Lance made his debut appearance in the first round of the 2005 season. He played extremely well that year especially considering the fact that this was his first season in the AFL. He finished the season playing 20 games out of the total 22 games and contributing 27 goals. This can be considered as a good performance for his first season. He had a serious setback to his performance the following season as a result of injuries he sustained on his ankle and hand early in the 2006 season. he made it back during the 9th round. During the 12th round, Lance displayed a great performance that saw him kick 6 goals in the match against Richmond.

Before the end of the 2006 season, Lance renewed his contract and extended his stay at Hawthorn Hawks by another two years. Prior to this, he was widely speculated to be a subject of attraction by clubs like Essendon, West Coast, and Fremantle. The 2007 season was a great one for Lance. He finished the season with 63 goals placing him third in the Coleman Medal in the entire AFL that season. He also finished the season in the number three position in the club’s Best and Fairest Awards, as well as the leading goal kicker for Hawthorn Hawks.

Professional Career Achievements

Lance Franklin kept improving consistently and in 2008 he won the Coleman Medal for kicking a total of 102 goals during the season. He also featured in the Dream Team where he kicked four goals during the AFL Hall of Fame Tribute Match. He was the first Aboriginal player to reach this feat in the AFL. He won the AFL premiership this year with Hawthorn Hawks and also won the Peter Cummins Medal which is the Best and Fairest Award in the club. The 2009 season was not particularly a good one for him as he had to undergo surgery for injury on his thumb and shoulder, as a fall out of the previous season. After returning to play, his performances were not the same as that of the previous season. he lost one of his teeth during a ball contest in a match and was also suspended for two games as a result of rough play against a Richmond player in a match.

He had a good season in 2010 but cannot be said to be exceptional. His performance in some matches was extremely brilliant but not in all the matches and he has continued in a similar manner in the current season. He is said to be dating an Australian model and is quite glad about his heritage.

4 Tips to Choose the Right Soccer Footwear

So, you are going to buy a sturdy and comfortable pair of football boots. However, the problem is that you have no idea how to choose from so many options available to you. And you can’t afford to opt for the wrong pair.

That’s the reason we are going to help you opt for the right pair based on a lot of important factors like the surface type you are going to play on. Without further ado, let’s check out some helpful buying tips. Read on to know more.

1. Look for the Right Sports Store

Buying the right boots is paramount. Your nearby shop may not have a large variety of brands. So, what you should do is visit bigger stores to make sure you can check out a big collection to make the right choice.

There are many benefits of opting for the best store. For instance, these stores offer discounts on their products. Plus, they are more reliable and trustworthy than smaller shops.

2. Consider a Good Brand

Secondly, it’s important that you don’t choose just any brand you find at the shop. Just like you can’t buy any smartphone you find at a smartphone shop, you can’t just buy any regular brand. Therefore, you may want to do your homework first to know the product specifications.

You don’t need to make your decision based on Adidas or Nike commercials. In fact, you can choose from a lot of reliable and affordable brands. Your goal should be to choose an item that is worth the money you want to spend.

3. Try the Soccer Boots On

Although it’s obvious that you should try the boots on before making the payment, some people just don’t do it. It’s not a good idea to buy soccer boots based on their looks or design. If they don’t fit you, they will be useless for you.

You should buy a pair only if you know that the pair is comfortable enough. If the boots are too tight, you should try a different pair. You may not want to compromise on the comfort level of the shoes you are going to pay for.

Tips to opt for the right size

As a general rule, there should be a ½ or ¼ inch gap between the top of the shoes and your toes. If there is more space than that, the boots are too big. Ideally, there should be a small space for the best fit.

Your toes shouldn’t press against the top of the shoes or they may feel too tight. In this case, you should opt for a bigger size.

4. Consider your Playing Style

All of us have our own playing styles as far as playing football is concerned. So, you should determine your position and style before you settle on your favorite pair of boots. This is quite important if you buy everything based on your personal preferences.

In short, you may want to follow these 4 tips when looking for the best pair of football boots to meet your playing needs.

The Way Forward For Nigerian Football – Part 1

Recently Nigeria participated in the African Soccer Nations’ Cup Tournament in Angola and ended up maintaining it regular Bronze medal (third place) which she just won for the 7th time making her the highest winner of bronze medal in the history of the tournament. We actually got to the semi finals by miracle. I am sure anybody who knew Nigerian football far back in 1994 would agree with me on this, especially those who actually watched the matches in the just concluded tournament.

In 1994 we were 5th on the FIFA ranking and best in Africa, but when Berti Vogts came he took us to 47th position and for the first time we failed to win at least a medal at the biennial event since 1988. Coach Shuaibu Amodu inherited a disjointed, emotionally traumatized and sick team. He managed the team, playing about 23 matches and losing only 3. He did not achieve that feat; his effort has brought Nigeria back to 15th position in the world and 2nd in Africa. That of course is no mean achievement. But Amodu has remained under intense criticism from Nigerians who knew what their football used to be. The coached may have gotten a seemingly great result be not convincingly though.

The only area I am not too comfortable with Coach Shuiba Amodu is in the area of invitation of players for competitions or tournament as the case may be. While on earth would he invite half fit players to camp when there are so many of them to choose from? Did people Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Joseph Yobo, Taye Taiwo and few others deserve to be in that team? Aside those who now have a guaranteed regular jersey are there no more players Nigeria could make do with? You saw what happened to Ghana national team: they went with half of the U-20 team that won the world cup in Egypt and defeated us with that team. That to me was a total humiliation to our Super Eagles. Where are the boys who won the U-16 world cup for us in Korea in 1997? Has none of them matured? The same thing that has happened to their predecessors has also happened to them. The cabals have held tenaciously to the team’s jerseys with no place left for the up coming players.

Egypt won the tournament 3 consecutive times with over 80% of the players based in their local league. Two Nigerian teams (Kano Pillars and Heartland FC) played in the semi finals of the CAF champions’ league in 2009, with Heartland losing narrowly to TP Mazembe of DRC in the finals, but funny enough no home based player was qualified enough to be in our team.

The Favorite Receivers of the Miami Dolphins Bob Griese

Bob Griese was a very successful quarterback in the National Football League. He was the quarterback for the team dating back to the late 1960’s, including shouldering some of the responsibility for the team that went undefeated in 1972, right up until the early 1980’s. Over the years, Griese played in some of the biggest games in team history. Thankfully, for Dolphins fans, he was more often than not successful in those big moments too.

There were a lot of great players on both sides of the ball that helped Griese and the Dolphins achieve some of their great heights. The Miami Dolphins of the 1970’s really epitomized the team football concept. Griese was a huge part of that team and his passing made the difference in many games. At a time when many teams were just discovering the concept of a wide open passing game, Bob Griese and the Dolphins were using a great running game to set up a deep throwing game plan that other teams would eventually emulate. Who though were Bob Griese’s favorite receivers during his career?

Here are the top five favorite touchdown pass targets for Bob Griese.

#1 – Nat Moore (33)

#2 – Paul Warfield (29)

#3 – Jim Mandich (21)

#4 – Howard Twilley (17)

#5 – Karl Noonan (16)

It’s true that Bob Griese had an excellent career, but a lot of his accolades are also due to the fact that he had some great players catching passes from him too.

Umtiti Heads France Into Final

Samuel Umtiti’s 51st-minute header sent an impressive France into the World Cup final with a 1-0 win over Belgium in an absorbing first semi-final on Tuesday.

Didier Deschamps’ side will face England or Croatia in Moscow on Sunday as the French look to lift the trophy for the second time following their triumph on home soil in 1998.

In an enthralling tactical match, it was once again a set-piece that proved decisive with Umtiti’s near-post header from an Antoine Griezmann corner settling matters.

Belgium took early control of midfield with France content to sit deep and eliminate the threat of counter-attacks from Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne.

But it was by no means a purely negative approach as the French offered their own danger on the break, perfectly illustrated when Paul Pogba’s delivery sent Kylian Mbappe racing towards goal and Belgium were thankful their keeper Thibaut Courtois was alert to snuff out the danger.

The first real opening came in the 16th minute when De Bruyne hooked the ball into the path of Hazard whose shot was just wide of Huge Lloris’s far post.

Hazard was dangerous again moments later when he cut in from the left and unleashed a rasping drive which clipped off the back of Raphael Varane and just over the bar.

From a Belgium corner, Toby Alderweireld tested Lloris with a smart shot on the turn but as the half progressed France began to create more.

Olivier Giroud flashed a header just wide and Mbappe set up Benjamin Pavard whose low shot was kept out by the outstretched leg of Courtois.

It was a fascinating first half and all that was missing was a goal but one came soon after the break.

From Griezmann’s corner, Umtiti beat Marouane Fellaini at the near post and powered a header home to put France ahead.

Fellaini flashed a header just wide and Axel Witsel forced a good save out of Lloris as Belgium pushed forward for an equaliser and France hung on in six minutes of stoppage time to book their place in the final.

France coach Didier Deschamps hailed the character of his young team after they beat Belgium 1-0 on Tuesday to set up a World Cup final against either England or Croatia in Moscow.

Samuel Umtiti’s 51st-minute header at St Petersburg Stadium sent the French into the final, where they will be seeking their second win since 1998 – when Deschamps captained them on home soil.

«It was exceptional,» Deschamps said in a pitchside interview.

«I’m very happy for my players, we showed character and the right mentality, it was very hard for us tonight. We worked hard defensively.

«We had to take advantage a bit more in the counter attacks, but congratulations to my players and my staff. I feel very proud for my group,» said Deschamps, who is aiming to join Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer and Brazil’s Mario Zagallo as the only men to have won the World Cup as both a player and a manager.

Hockey Uniforms: Manufactured in Impeccable Designs

Sports play an important role in our life. They help us to keep ourselves fit and healthy. There are different types of sports like cricket, football, volleyball, etc. Each sport requires skill and technique along with its prescribed uniform. Hockey is a sport played with great intensity between two teams of usually 11 players each. It is played with curved (j-shaped) sticks and a ball (or puck).

Games played with curved sticks and ball can be found in the pages of history but the word ‘hockey’ has no origin indeed. However it is said that the word hockey was extracted from a French word ‘houquet’ which means shepherd’s stave The first use of this word was made in a book ‘Juvenile Sports and Pastimes’ in 1773.

Field hockey, one of the subtypes, is played using sticks made of wood or fiber glass and a hard rubber ball. Length of stick varies according to the height of the player. The stick of a goalie is different from other players because it has another curve at the end. Jerseys, shin-guards, shorts or kilts, mouth guard and cleats are worn by players. Goalies can touch the ball with any part of the body whereas the field players use the flat side of their stick to play. The team scoring more goals by the end of the match wins.

Ice hockey is also one of the types. It is played on an ice-court where two teams of skaters play using their sticks to shoot a rubber (vulcanized) puck into the opponent’s goal post. There are six players in each team including the goalie. This game requires specialized equipments in order to prevent injury. Helmets, neck-guards, elbow pads, shoulder pads, jersey, gloves, pants, shin guards, mouth guard, ice skates, puck, stick and socks.

In both the game types, uniforms and accessories are too much important to play safe. The hockey uniforms suppliers are offering their collection in a wide array of designs & specifications. Jerseys are made of tough synthetic material, polyester generally, to reduce moisture and keep the player dry. In case of field hockey, jerseys are sleeveless and comfort-fit whereas in case of ice hockey, jerseys are full sleeves. All these jerseys are available at the stores of different hockey uniform manufacturers.

Hockey socks are not to be confused with regular socks. They are made from strong fabric and have openings at two ends, one is stretched up to the thighs and the other is at the ankle. They provide more protection than regular socks.

Hockey cannot be played using just a stick and a ball. It needs a genuine uniform and accessories. If you think you have that zeal for hockey you should always go for a proper uniform before playing. Jerseys, shorts, socks and other items can be purchased from various hockey uniforms suppliers at a very reasonable price. You will get assured quality of print and fabric. Try the original hockey gear and you will definitely feel the difference in your game play.

Custom Athletic Uniform

An athletic uniform is to an athlete what a logo or a trademark is to a business. It not only gives him his unique identity but also makes him feel confident, comfortable and smart. Athletic uniforms are so designed that they enhance the performance of the athletes. A custom athletic uniform is tailored according to the nature of the game and season also.

The uniform bears the name and sports number of the athlete wearing it. Athletic uniforms come in several shapes, sizes styles, colors and designs. There are shorts, jerseys, tee shirts, skirts, long sleeve tee shirts, fleece, workout wear and so on. However each uniform is custom made according to the measurements of each athlete and his taste, budget and fashion. An out-of-fashion and ill-fitting uniform, whether too loose or tight, small or large can make the athlete look ludicrous and adversely affect his performance.

Fabric-lightweight and comfortable

The fabric of the uniform should be made of lightweight, breathable and comfortable material. It should not be heavy and weigh down the athlete. It should not cause any adverse skin problems or allergies.

Not only the fabric, but the lettering, numbering and graphics on the uniform should also be made of light material and should not wear out quickly by cracking or peeling. They should be dyed directly into the fabric. The fabric of the uniform should be made of strong material that can withstand the sudden stretches, swings and unexpected physical movements in course of games such as football, cricket, tennis etc. The seams on the uniforms are the particularly vulnerable areas, as they tend to tear and wear out soon.

The style and fashionable design of the custom athletic uniform enhances the personal effect of the athlete. It makes him look more sexy and attractive. Sometimes the uniform can be so designed that the athlete looks awesome, formidable and indomitable to the competitor. It creates a deep psychological impact, a kind of fear psychosis on the opponents.

This, however, is not to suggest that the athletes win or lose on the basis of the uniforms that they wear. But we can see how we feel overawed by the persons who wear immaculately styled uniforms. The uniforms of various professionals such as air hostesses, diplomats, high flying sales executives and key defense and police personnel etc can be cited as examples.

You can buy the best uniforms from Victory. Since 1988, Victory Custom Athletic, Inc. has specialized in custom baseball uniforms and softball uniforms through our Los Angeles based factory direct manufacturing operation. FC Barcelona – The Cruyff Years

Johan Cruyff is a legendary football player known the world over for his aggressive and intelligent style of play. Though he had success in his earlier years, it is when he joined FC Barcelona in 1973 that his star really began to shine.

Cruyff began his career in his home country of the Netherlands playing for AFC Ajax. There he led the team to many victories and memorable performances, but was eventually sold to FC Barcelona for a hefty sum. Cruyff wasted no time winning over the Barcelona fans, stating to the press that he chose Barcelona over their rivals Real Madrid because he didn’t want to play for a team associated with former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. He even named his son Jordi, a traditional Catalan (the region of Spain in which Barcelona is found) name.

Cruyff’s years playing for FC Barcelona were truly memorable and made him an icon. In his first year with the team, he helped them win La Liga for the first time in fourteen years (beating Real Madrid on their own turf along the way) and was also named European Footballer of the Year. It was during this time that he also scored one of his most memorable goals, called «The Phantom Goal» or «Le but d’imposible de Cruyff» (The Impossible Goal of Cruyff). In a match against Atlético Madrid, the football was already past the far goal post and was at about neck height when Cruyff leapt into the air, twisting so that he was facing away from the goal and kicked the ball into the goal with his right heel. This move among others propelled him to godlike status in the eyes of football fans.

Cruyff then spent many years away from FC Barcelona as a player and manager, until finally returning to the club as manager in 1988. When he returned to Barcelona, Cruyff brought with him the so-called «Dream Team». This elite squad was composed of Spaniards Jon Andoni Goikoetxea, Jose Mari Bakero, Josep Guardiola, Txiki Beguiristain, along with international stars Romanian Gheorghe Hagi, Bulgarian Hristo Stoichkov, Dane Michael Laudrup, Brazilian Romario, and Dutchman Ronald Koeman.

Under Cruyff’s direction, the Dream Team went on to win four consecutive La Liga titles from 1991 to 1994. They won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1989 and the European Cup in 1992 at Wembley Stadium with a famous free kick goal courtesy of Ronald Koeman. In 1990, the Dream Team won a Copa del Rey, the European Super Cup in ’92, and three Supercopa de Espana.

Cruyff remains FC Barcelona’s most successful manager to date, with eleven trophies to his name. He also has the distinction of being the club’s longest serving manager. He continues to be an advisor for FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, whom he openly endorsed during the elections. To this day, he is still revered by FC Barcelona fans, who call him «El Salvador» (The Saviour) for his successful run as both player and coach at the club.
