Football Training for Agility

There is no argument that football players need to be quick and agile. Agility training for football players in a must and needs to be addressed in every teams training program. In this article, we will discuss how the development of motor skills will help improve agility.

You have to get scientific about your approach. It is not good enough to simply engage in a bunch of cardiovascular exercises that do nothing to develop the specific motor skills necessary to best perform your given position. You have to know what has been proven to work to increase agility. You first need to define exactly what motor skills that you are attempting to enhance. Only then can you devise an efficient program to hone in on them with agility exercises.

Motor Learning Science Background

Motor movements have two classifications: open and closed. Each type demands specific functioning from the central nervous system (CNS). Each also requires very distinct interpretations of receptor information, efficient response mechanisms, memory recall and neuromuscular stimuli.

Low level motor movement, closed motor skills, in this situation of execution, is pretty much static. In other words, they remain constant and predictable.

* They have definitive starting and stopping points.

* Neuromuscular feedback to the CNS has a very small role in the execution of the movement. That means that there is very little involvement from the muscular proprioceptors for correction once the movement is set into play.

* A muscular proprioceptor is a signaling mechanism in a muscle or a joint that provides information to the CNS concerning the appropriateness of a given movement.

* The movement is self-directed and initiated from the intention of the athlete.

Some examples of closed motor skills are golf strokes, track and field events, archery and weightlifting. You see, these actions are stable and predictable – not a lot of variance involved.

At the other extreme of motor movement are the open skills. * These are more complex and require more feedback from the proprioceptors because they occur in non-static situations. * Split-second adjustments are commonly needed to successfully execute these movements. Incorrect bodily positioning, harm-announcing pressure and of course sharp pains are some of the possible feedback scenarios for incorrect motions.

* There can also be instantaneous reactions in movement from visual and auditory stimuli. For instance, a third baseman may immediately go into motion upon a split-second projection of a batter’s contact with a pitched ball. Also, a basketball player may immediately respond to a vocal signal from a point guard.

* Open motor skills are called «forced pace» skills because of the ever-evolving conditions in which they occur. Instantaneously precise actions and reactions are required for optimal success.

Obviously, open motor skills require a different and more advanced type of conditioning for their development. It can be a complex science just to discern the sport-specific motor skills to develop. Agility training for football varies with the position played and the natural abilities of the players. Also, it follows that there are an infinite number of possible scenarios that could or could not be task-specific enough to be beneficial when performing agility training for football.

In essence, agility is the ability to change your direction. This doesn’t simply apply to your entire bodily direction, but also to specific areas or parts of your body. An example would be a wide receiver jumping through the air, looking back over his own shoulders, sighting the ball sailing towards him, sustaining his altitude maximally, extending his hands high around his right side all while anticipating and preparing for an eminent collision with an oncoming opponent. This is a constant event.

Agility training for football is considered to be the most important overall element of a player’s training regimen. Agility training must be varied from position to position as well. For example, a defensive back may cover 10 to 15 yards every play of the game while an offensive lineman may never move more than 5 to 10 yards in any given play. There are skill positions and power positions in the game and each type must train for agility differently.

Here are some basic agility training exercises for football:

W – Pattern Cones are placed in the form of an elongated W (about 10 or 12 yards apart). The players run in straight lines from cone to cone. Focus is concentrated on rapid starts and stops.

Lateral Shuffle Take a dozen cones and place them roughly 5 yards apart, 1 yard in front of each other. Perform a lateral shuffle through the cones with optimal speed. No crossing feet. Stay low to the ground.

Figure 8 Shuffle 2 cones are placed roughly 2 yards apart. Moving around the cones, your football athlete makes 6 shuffle movements, in a figure 8 pattern. The direction of the shuffle is then reversed and the shuffles repeated.

These are just a few of the unlimited varieties of agility training exercises for football. Many other exercises and movement patterns can be used. The important thing to remember is that you are preparing yourself to respond instantaneously to any number of unpredictable external stimuli. You have to keep your mind open to visual stimuli and auditory commands as well as physical pressures and signals. Agility training for football is some of the most important training that players do. it needs to be practiced year round.

Football Games For Bachelor Parties

Thankfully, the bride and groom planned their wedding for a time of year when the weather was still nice. That gives you guys an opportunity to throw a bachelor party for your buddy at football game. You guys are going to have a blast. What could be more fun right?

Not so fast guys. NFL and college teams are cracking down on the heavy drinking leading up to game time. Drunken fans are no longer welcome in stadiums across the United States. They are checking people at the entrance more thoroughly than they have in the past. At some stadiums there are even sheriffs stationed near the men’s room. They know that if you’ve been drinking too much beer, you are going to be going to the bathroom a lot. These guys are too smart.

Being the wise guys that you are, some of you will still try to pull it off. You’ll get past the main entrance and find your seats alright. Heck, one of you might even sneak in a little flask of some decent whisky. You will get caught though. You’ll get caught because drunken Bob decides to light up a cigarette while sitting at his seat even though the stadium prohibits it. Some people really hate smokers.

Some fan who is sitting behind you guys will make a big deal out of it. He will start complaining to you guys or maybe even flag down a security guard. Then of course Bob won’t be so cordial. Bob is going to be wearing his biggest beer muscles from all the beer funnels you guys did in the parking lot. One thing leads to another and wham. You guys get ejected from the stadium. Drunken Bob gets a free trip to the jail cell they have at the stadium just for guys like him.

Instead of heading to the club afterward to watch the ladies dance, you guys will be trying to figure out how to get Bob out of the clink. Then you’ll be trying to figure out how to help him avoid a divorce once his wife finds out. Good luck with that.

Now instead of having a happy memory you guys can joke around about for many years to come, you’ll be talking about how much you hate the NFL and how bad it stinks that Bob’s life has gone straight downhill since his wife left him.

The days of NFL football being a weekly Octoberfest are over. Maybe that is why they charge ten bucks a beer now. Better think again before having your buddy’s bachelor party at a football game, especially if you guys are drinkers.

The New Wembley Stadium – Home to English Football

For any soccer fan, a visit to the new Wembley Stadium is a must. Not only is it one of the world’s most outstanding modern stadiums, but is host to the best of English football and features a veritable ‘footie-fest’ of the nation’s leading cup finals and Football League play-offs every season.

The Football Association – the sport’s governing body – is planning a £12million move of its administrative headquarters from Soho Square to the new Stadium during July 2009. As Wembley is also the home venue for all of England’s international fixtures – including the qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup Finals – the move will firmly establish the stadium as the ‘home of English football’.

As the English football season progresses towards its climax in May, Wembley hosts a number of prestigious finals including the traditional finale to the football season – the FA Cup Final. But, before that the cup final season begins in either late February or early March with the staging of the Carling Cup Final. This show piece cup competition of the Football League will celebrate its 50th anniversary at Wembley in 2010.

Next up is the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final played at Wembley in early April. This competition is exclusively for clubs that compete in League One and League Two of the Football League. The 2009 final was an absolute thriller with Luton beating Scunthorpe 3-2 after extra time in front of a substantial lower league football crowd of 53,378.

In May the games come thick and fast at the Stadium, starting with the FA Trophy Final and FA Vase Final, played on successive days on the second weekend of the month.

Next, and still in May, the Football League hosts the Play-off finals when the last promotion spots for The Championship, League One and League Two are decided. Indeed, The Football League Championship play-off final – normally played on late May Bank Holiday Monday – is billed as football’s most lucrative ‘one-off’ game. The winners will be promoted to the Barclays Premier League and with that comes access to lucrative TV money.

Finally, the last weekend in May sees the traditional season finale; the FA Cup final. This is one of the few ‘protected’ games to be televised live on terrestrial channels and is the daddy of all football competition finals. As you can see, May is also the month when the owners of London hotels – particularly those situated around Wembley – rub their hands in glee at the glut of ‘no vacancies’ signs, as they accommodate the thousands of football fans travelling to the capital to watch their teams in action.

But, fans of football that can’t get a ticket to a game at Wembley needn’t despair. They can still access the stadium and sample its marvellous features at first-hand by buying a Stadium tour ticket.

To improve stride speed, spend some time working your thigh flexor muscles during your weight training sessions. Find a resistance band and fix one end to a stationary object about ankle height from the ground. Fix the other end of the resistance band to your ankle. Standing with your feet about hip’s width apart, move your foot with the band attached about 12 inches off the ground in front of you while slightly bending the knee. Hold this position approximately 15 seconds and then return to the original position. How to Turnaround Consistent Loser Programs in Youth Football

There is a tiny niche of football coaches at the High School level that thrive on going into downtrodden programs and turning them completely around in short time frames. These are a rare breed of coach who welcome the daunting challenge to help improve the fortunes of long suffering players and fans. Donnie Kiefer is one of these guys that I have admired from afar for years, he was kind enough to agree to do an interview with me. His stated goal for the interview is to help both youth and High School coaches to understand that their situations aren’t impossible and give them some ideas that they might apply to their own situations. Donnie is currently head coach at Tuscola High School near Asheville, North Carolina. Tuscola has 1,038 students.

Dave- Coach Kiefer, how long have you been coaching High School football?

Coach- For 29 years, 25 as a head coach, primarily in the Carolinas.

Dave- How many different schools did you coach at?

Coach- 7 Different High Schools as head coach.

Dave- Tell us about some of the turnarounds from a numbers perspective.

Coach- I’ve been in some rough spots, places where the kids were embarrassed to be part of the football team, embarrassed to wear the team gear. At one inner city school the 3 years prior to me arriving, the team went 0-30. In my first year there we played for the first ever East Region Championship game.

At the next school the team had won just 4 games total in the 5 years before I got there. In the first year there we played for the East Region Championship. We went 35-7 while I was there and went 12-2 in my last season.

Next I went to a well off suburban school they had won just 1 game in the previous 4 years before I coached there. We won 15 games in the 2 years there and lost both years to the eventual State Champions.

At another school we put together the first back to back winning season that the school had had in over 20 years.

I was a head coach at a school where we won 9 games 3 seasons in a row going 27-9, inheriting a program that was considered by many to be unsalvageable.

Where I’m at now we took a team that was 2-9 to 5-7 in the first year, losing 2 games in overtime. The last 2 years we went 11-1 and 12-2-1 and made the playoffs this year in an injury riddled season.

Dave- That is amazing, why do you take on these rebuilding projects instead of staying where you have built a winner?

Coach- Probably ADD (laughs). I like the challenge but I try to just stay open to be obedient to what God wants me to do. I think this is what He wants me to be doing instead of maintaining what someone else has built.

Dave- What are the things you have to do to turn a failing program around?

Coach- First is faith in God, to give you the wisdom to succeed in your task. The number two thing is to change the mentality of the kids. I don’t talk about improving I talk about winning championships and setting that as the standard they embrace. I like to talk about why we are going to win, how we are going to get there and do it with extreme enthusiasm. I set the bar very high and get them to believe in not accepting mediocrity or small improvements like winning seasons. I’m a big believer in a competitive strength and conditioning- we get results there and the way we do it gives us an advantage over our competition. X’s and O’s and strategy are important as well as being a master at making adjustments, if for anything so the kids believe in the coaching staff. Being able to motivate and develop players. Teaching players to be smart football players and intelligent about the game. Treat the players like your own children, love them and let them know it, but be firm. They don’t need another buddy, they need someone to show them how to be a man. Teach great fundamentals, our schemes may change but our emphasis and how we teach fundamentals do not change. Strive for perfection in everything down to how you do cals, demand it from your coaches and players. Put the kids into a system they can realistically execute.

Dave- What must a school have in the way of facilities, administration, players and community wise for you to take on a rebuilding project?

Coach- I don’t really look at everything. We can get the facilities improved when we start winning, there are some things we can improve on our own. I don’t worry myself with what we don’t have and what I can’t control, I worry about the things I have control over. I don’t look at the players, we don’t have a lot of control there. We haven’t needed great players to turn these places around I’ve been at. I just look for an AD that wants to win, that has a passion for winning and believes that I’m the one that can do it.

Dave- How important are schemes?

Coach- They are important in that they need to be well thought out, but I think the schemes ought to fit your personnel. A scheme should put the kids in a position where they can have success. I don’t force kids into an offense or defense that I want to run, I run a scheme that fits my kids. We have run Wing T, Single Wing, Spread, I Formation, Power I, Run and Shoot and Triple Option. Heck with one team we ran a different offense 2 years in a row and we were winning big in both seasons. You always have kids graduating and new kids coming up, those new kids may do something a lot better or worse than the previous group, so changing makes sense. If you teach great fundamentals and teach kids how to be smart football players, you aren’t going to hurt yourself, you aren’t going to be out of position and give yourself a chance to compete.

Dave- What did you do to get players, coaches, administration and stake holders to trust you and buy into your approach to doing things?

Coach- You just have to be genuine and confident. People see through bluffing and bravado right away. I let people know I’m there for two purposes, develop young men and win championships. They all know I’ve never used any job as a stepping stone to get another job.

Dave- Was there much «dead wood» that you had to cut loose at the places you went to?

Coach- Some, unfortunately you do have to hold kids and coaches accountable and sometimes they will not meet expectations. The kids have to know you are serious and you have to be able to have the courage to lose your best player. I’m a big fan of second chances and we give kids plenty of time to make things up, but in the end they have to be held accountable. Most of our kids see that the enthusiasm we have is genuine and they see results pretty quick. The kids are getting stronger, getting faster, jumping higher that gets us some nearly instant credibility, we don’t have as many problems there as you might expect from schools that are used to losing.

Dave- Are you a my way or the highway type communicator? What is your communication style?

Coach- I’m more of a lets do it the Right Way type of guy. We try and model high character, high effort, high accountability and build an environment where we don’t tolerate those how don’t.

Dave- Do you take your coaching staff with you or do you hire new coaches?

Coach- I’ve never been able to take my staff with me, I usually inherit a staff that I have to sell on my approach and retrain.

Dave- What do you look for in an assistant coach?

Coach- Willingness to learn, Loyalty, ability to relate to kids, knowledgeable and ability to work with staff. My best assistant coach ever was a kid fresh out of school whose goal was to be a Varsity Baseball coach. He didn’t know much about football. He is now a head coach, his teams have played for the State Title 2 times in the last 4 years and was named as an assistant coach of the Shrine Bowl. He just had an appetite for learning and knew how to work with kids.

Dave- So many people out there today say the game is all about the Jimmys and the Joes, whoever has the best talent is going to win the game. Do you believe that? Why do you think that premise is so prevalent today?

Coach- Obviously I don’t believe that. It’s a cop out, a convenient crutch. Many coaches are just plain jealous of coaches who work hard and coach well. They tell everyone that will listen that with the talent levels they have, they can’t be expected to win. It’s an easy way out.

Dave- How have the teams fared after you have left?

Coach- Some have maintained, some not. It’s heartbreaking to see it when they don’t. One season coming off an 11 win year I left for another program. We had all but 3 starters returning, left them in a situation where the table was set, they ended up winning 3 games that year and won just 2-3 games combined the next couple of seasons.

I’ve never left the cupboard bear at any of the places I’ve coached at, that wouldn’t be right. If anything if I see there is going to be a dip, I stay just to make sure I’m leaving them on high ground. In the end all glory is to God, I’m giving Him credit for everything, I’m just trying to do what He wants me to do and go where He wants me to go.

Dave- I might add coach Kiefer needed some coaxing to tell much of his story. If you know Donnie, you know he is a humble guy who loves his kids and wants the very best for them. He is selfless to a fault a truly great coach, the kind of guy you would love your kids to play for. What an encouragement it is to those of us stuck coaching in a program that is a perennial loser or for those considering taking over a program that has been down in the dumper for a long time. There is hope, it is doable, it has been done. For those of you coaching youth football the path out of the cellar is not as hopeless as you think.

The 3-4 Defense For Pee Wee Football

The 3-4 defense has been used with great success, especially with the Steelers in the NFL. I have used the 3-4 with 5 year-old flag players and 14 year-old travel tackle players as long as it has been modified for the level you are coaching.

Looking like the 5-4 defense, the 3-4 will confuse many coaches at the youth football level. A crucial component when installing a difficult defensive system, like the 3-4 defense, is making certain it has been adjusted to the level you are coaching. If you are coaching a young team you will not need any of the fancy blitz packages in the 3-4. The stunts, slants, blitzes and corner back schemes come in many varieties in the 3-4 defense. Many of these will have to be left out or tweaked in a big way if you want to use them at the pop warner level.The younger your players are in age, the less complicated you need to make it.

The slant used by the defensive line needs to be used at every age level. This devastating technique will have your defensive line messing up your opponent’s blocking schemes and they will not even realize you are doing it to them.

With the proper preparation, including a complete scouting report of your upcoming opponent, you should be able to use the slant to confuse the blocking schemes of your opponent. The beauty of the 3-4 defense is that you should be able to mess up your opponents entire offensive line using only three players. Hopefully you have scouted your opponent and have a good idea of the blocking styles he will attempt to use against your team. Using defensive line slants, you will be able to occupy all five of his offensive linemen with just your nose guard and two defensive tackles. You will be able to play most of the game with a two man advantage. We show all the modifications for the defensive line slants and stunts in our youth 3-4 Defense Playbook.

For over 20 years the 3-4 defense has been my base defense. I have installed it with 14 year-old travel level teams as well as 5 year-old flag teams and have enjoyed tremendous success. I have coached in the smallest city in my conference and have rarely allowed greater than two scores in any game. In nearly half my games we have shut out our opposition and I have a winning percentage of over 80%. I believe in minimal, if any, blitzing and like to use the defensive line slant to keep the opponent’s offensive linemen away from my line backers. Unblocked line backers run free to make plays and I want my best athletes running free.

In conclusion, the 3-4 makes a wonderful defense to use at all levels of football as long as the coaches use a modified version applicable to the level they are coaching.

The Balanced Line Single Wing Offense for Youth Football

Most youth football teams that run the Single Wing Offense run it out of the traditional unbalanced line set.

Many coaches have asked me about using the Balanced Line Single Wing Offense in youth football. For most coaches, they ask because they have «Special Rules» in their Youth Football Leagues that require them to use balanced line formations. From 2-3% of youth football leagues have rules like this.

It is very simple to modify the Unbalanced Line Single Wing Offense to a balanced line set. While most High Schools that run the Single Wing Offense do stick to the unbalanced set, a number of them do have a balanced line set or two as well.

Menominee Michigan High School runs nearly its entire Single Wing Offense out of a balanced line set. Menominee won yet another State Title last year as well as blew out the Defending Largest Class State Champion (Wayzata- 3,400 students) of Minnesota. Menominee as most of you know, has just 550 students. It’s hard to argue with Menominee head coach Ken Hofer, who has over 250 wins running this offense from a balanced line set. Hofer is a legend in Single Wing circles and is an excellent clinic speaker.

Some modifications required if you run the Single Wing Offense from a Balanced Line Set:

The midpoint of the offensive line is the center, you now wedge on the center. Pull the Left Guard on off-tackle runs to the right. Pull just the Right Guard (not the power tackle also) on reverse runs to the left. The Left Tackle Blocks GD, Gap-Down on traps to the left.

As you can see, moving to the balanced line is no big deal if you are required to do so. If I was forced to run this offense, those would be the changes I would make. I would make my power tackle the left guard, as he would be my second most athletic lineman.

We must all play by whatever rules the leagues think makes sense, no matter how silly they may be. Don’t dwell or whine about it, just make the adjustments and make it work.
