Football Safety Tips For Kids

Let’s face it: in America, football is king. It is the social glue that holds together countless communities, groups of friends, and even entire families, with millions gathering in the stands and around TV screens annually to share in the thrill of a big game. In some towns, it would not be a surprise for a child to make his first pass before learning to walk. On the field, in the home or bar, football reigns supreme.

Every year, thousands of kids gear up for a first-hand taste of this national pastime. However, as a full-contact sport, there is no avoiding the fact that football can be dangerous at any level, amateur and professional alike. With this in mind, here are a few ways in which you can best ensure your child’s experience on a school or club football team is as positive and character-building as it should be.

Proper Gear

The first step to take in keeping your child safe regardless of position he or she will play  is an investment in the right protective gear. The following list covers all the equipment with which any football player should be outfitted:

Helmet with face mask and a mouth guard – A proper fit in this department is crucial, as oversized helmets and mouth guards can easily be knocked off during rougher moments.

Protective padding for thighs, shoulders and around the hips

Cleats – Football is traditionally an all-weather sport, so having a shoes that can grip the turf well in every condition is important in preventing twisted ankles and other foot-related injuries.

Leg and ankle braces – Related to the point about, these minimize the severity of the slips, trips, and falls that occur in virtually every play.

Preparation

As with any sport, proper stretches and warm-up exercises are vital to preventing strains and maximizing athleticism. A thorough routine can be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes long, and will raise body temperature, heart and respiratory rates, and increase metabolic Stretches should be comprehensive, covering not only limbs and joints but also the torso. Remember, always include at least a short run before stretching out to avoid pulling a muscle, and stretch just to the point of discomfort – not beyond.

Last but not least, always make sure your child understands the rules of the game before taking the field. This is one of the simplest to avoid an injury, and yet it is too often overlooked. Good communication between coaches, players, and referees is one of the best guarantees for safe game.

Football and Violence – Football Or Fireball?

Recently concluded Euro 2008 was widely covered in the international media, but there was another news that attracted lesser coverage and readers. Spain’s Euro 2008 football victory party turned sour when one fan died and nearly 100 suffered injuries during wild celebrations in Madrid.

The victim, a 40-year-old man, was found lying in a pool of blood by street cleaners in the centre of the capital. The initial media reports suggested that he probably suffered a head wound.

After the national team had broken a 44-year spell, Spaniards took to the streets in wild celebrations that lasted well into the following day. Wrapped in Spanish flags fans let off fireworks and honked car horns.

Police tried to stop fans from jumping into the Cibeles fountain, the traditional way to celebrate a football victory and made baton charges to break up isolated rioting in the capital. More than 50 supporters were arrested for acts of vandalism and public disorder. Luckily there was only one reported death.

The game of football has been closely associated with hundreds of death. Many times it was a result of hooliganism or football riots and many times it was an out come of accidents or stampedes or fights among the fans.

Football and violence have been moving closely since many years. In 1314 King Edward II of UK banned football to prevent football related violence. Most of the football playing nations, have witnessed football related deaths from time to time.

In 1968, over 70 people died when crowds attending a football match in Argentina, stampeded after some youths threw burning papers on each others. In 1971, a fight broke out at a match in Brazil, killing four and injuring 1,500.

In 1964, in another football accident more than 300 football fans died and another 500 were injured in Peru in a riot during an Olympic qualifying match between Argentina and Peru.

In June 2006, Germany beat Poland in a world cup finals match, a result that meant Germany qualified for the second round in the finals. The match was marred by violent clashes between German and Polish fans. The police detained over 300 people in Dortmund after clashes broke out. German fans threw chairs, bottles and fireworks at the police. Various groups of German and Polish fans fought with each other in separate clashes. In February 2007 in Saxony, all German lower league matches were cancelled after about 800 fans attacked 300 police officers after a match.

In Turkey, before Galatasaray’s semifinal UEFA cup match with Leeds United A.F.C. in 2000, many fans were stabbed to death following street fights between Turkish and British hooligans.

At the 2006 FIFA world cup in Germany, there were limited incidences of violence, with over 200 preventative arrests. During that time, Police believe that on average each rioter consumed or threw 17 litres of beer.

In more serious situation, police had to protect Libyan fans in the Egypt from missiles being thrown at them by Egypt fans in the tier above them during a match between Egypt and Morocco.

In another football accident 125 people died and hundreds were injured when football fans stampeded at a match in Ghana in 2001. In Johannesburg, South Africa, on 14 January 1991 forty people died when fans surged toward a jammed exit to escape rival brawling fans at a match south west of Johannesburg.

On April 15, 1989 in England, Ninety-five people are killed and at least 200 injured in Britain’s worst sports disaster after a crowd surge crushed packed fans against barriers at the English F.A. Cup semifinal match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at the Hillsborough stadium.

In thousands of other cases hundreds of fans were stabbed at various places world wide. Many matches faced cancellation and many clubs paid hefty fines. Public property faced destruction in countless events. All these incidents leave the game with a tarnished image. Now most of the football playing nations, are taking extra security measures for various tournaments. Along with the governments, a lot depends on the fans as well. Only they can help curb such violence. A broader and more liberal outlook among fans is needed to make the sport a sporty affair!

International Football (Soccer) Academy Tips – Achieving Your Soccer Fitness Goals

When you set out to train at an elite football (soccer) academy, or work out your own football training in advance at home, it can be difficult to stay on target. But if you have a goal in mind, and specific steps to achieve that goal, you’re miles ahead of other people who do nothing but dream.

This kind of preparation makes all the difference in the world. Our international football academy coaches can always tell the difference between players who work to prepare, and those who just show up at our football academies. For you, it could be the difference between watching from the sidelines and actually achieving your football goals.

International football academy training and conditioning

The first step is setting targets and goals you want to reach in football. You can do that on a per-month basis. For example, if you’re arriving at your football academy in September, set yourself a 6-month program to decide where you want to be in terms of physical condition.

The idea is to set realistic, measurable targets. Set your targets based on an assessment of yourself, not your peers. You know where you’re at right now, and you know you want to be in the best possible shape when you arrive at an international football academy to begin your soccer training.

Look to make that improvement every week, every month. Month one can have a number of fitness elements: pushups, 50-yard sprint, 400-yard at half-pace, etc. Bear in mind that in football one must be match fit. You’ll need a lot of strength in both your upper and lower bodies, and the endurance to run for 90 minutes with little rest, in order to achieve success at the highest level.

You’ll be better off making goals you know you can meet to improve yourself little by little. And you’ll be more likely to stay on target. You can count the number of reps you do, and increase by 15 percent by the end of the month. That’s realistic. Increasing it by 75 percent? That’s probably not realistic.

International football academy language and culture

For international football academies that have an associated educational curriculum, you need to consider the language component also. If you’re going into another country with a different language, you need to work towards a basic understanding of that language.

Traveling to another country to study football, language, and culture will make for a well-rounded experience and will increase your professional marketability. Being bilingual is an obvious advantage in any business.

Set targets for both academics (linguistics) and football. If you’re continuing high school academics and you’re going into an environment where you haven’t spent time speaking the language, your goal should be arriving day one with basic communication skills. Get acclimated to the language as much as possible, studying, listening, and speaking beforehand.

And above all, show commitment, respect, and effort while studying abroad. Sometimes those extra efforts make the difference in receiving a passing grade or not!

Determination and perseverance

The NIKE slogan, «Just do it,» applies nicely here. Daily individual training discipline is the most obvious key to success. It’s about what you do when no one else is around. Sticking to your plan is the most important part of your preparation.

When you put a training program into place for yourself, it’s easy to let it slip when you don’t feel like training. It’s easy to say things like «I’m too tired, so I think I’ll skip that two hours I set aside for language or academics.» Or let yourself get distracted by friends or going to the movies instead of training.

This is where 95 percent of people don’t succeed: they don’t stick with the plan they put into place. One difference between the pros and those who don’t make it: pros stick with the program. Only the athletes with true grit and determination make it to the highest level.

Ask yourself to be that special athlete (and student) by showing extreme commitment and determination. You can do it if you are mentally disciplined enough to commit fully!

It’s easier to achieve training targets or goals when you’re in an international football academy program. Players have less trouble sticking with the football training schedule because someone else (the football coach or manager) is setting up the training program for you. Everyone around you is pushing you to perform. You have teammates doing the same thing.

Attending an international football academy is much more demanding than any other academic or cultural exchange program abroad. You’re committing yourself to being ready, mentally and physically, to participate as a footballer in the football development academy. You will be training daily over a nine-month period.

Put it in your mind that the work starts the day you commit to register to get the maximum benefit. This means you should arrive ready and prepared to get the most out of your international football academy experience.

Online football is a hugely popular internet phenomenon. Unlike the actual game of football, it is played with the fingers using keyboard and mouse. But it has all the thrills and spirit of the actual game of football. Normally, one needs to download a game software application for playing football on the internet. There are specific websites for providing a platform for playing the game. Also, most of the popular football game software packages available on computer shops provide facility of playing on the internet also.

How To Play Online Football

The first thing one has to learn is the specific keyboard and mouse controls of the game software. There will be specific keys for various actions on the football field such as passing, throwing, tackling, and shooting. Once you become familiar, or rather your fingers become familiar with the keys, you can move into the multi-player domain on the internet. In the online football games one can either select an existing team or make a new team using the existing players.

All the major game software packages simulate the exact match settings. The appearance of players, stadium settings, and commentary are nearly the same as what we see on television screens. Do’s and Don’ts of Buying Football Shoes

With a number of international football leagues in full swing, the craze for football stays to be as prominent as it could be. Do you want to learn the moves you’ve seen your favorite footballers perform this season? You will need the correct shoes for that. In this article, we are going to discuss the do’s and don’ts of buying football shoes.

The Do’s

1. Surface type

When selecting football boots, it’s important that you consider the surface you’ll be playing on. Various kinds of boots are made for various purposes. The last thing you want to do is pick ones that aren’t appropriate for the pitch you’ll play on. Doing so can affect your game and result in you being not able to play at your top level.

2. Picking Shoes That Match Your Feet Shape

You can’t shoot the ball if the shoes you’re wearing don’t complement your feet shape! If you do get that ideal fit, ensure that the shoes you select suit the shape of your feet.

Many times, the correct football shoes are not the same as the shoe size we wear due to the style in which it’s made. Make sure that the ones you get line up with both your feet even if it implies getting a size you haven’t previously purchased.

3. Picking Comfort Over Style

Regardless of what type of shoes you’re getting, comfort is an absolute necessity in all shoes and that holds for football boots too. After all, how will you manage to play the game if you’re not comfortable? When choosing footwear, comfort is paramount.

The Don’ts

1. Gambling on the Size

Do not buy a couple of shoes that are only a little too large for you in the expectations that you’ll grow into it. Moreover, don’t buy a pair of shoes that are excessively tight either.

Try to get a size that fits you perfectly. The same as you have to pick a pair that matches your feet shape. You also need the correct size to be able to kick and run with them on without any problem.

2. Purchasing a Pair of Shoes Because of Celebrity Status

Regardless of whether your preferred football player wears a specific brand of football boots, don’t let that alone be the main reason you end up purchasing those shoes.

It’s alright to idealize successful footballers, but that doesn’t mean you should purchase a pair designed by Ronaldinho or worn by Messi even if it’s not an ideal choice for you. Go for shoes you can comfortably wear and play in.

3. Being Afraid to Buy Online

Finally, don’t fear purchasing football boots online. Not only do you get more economical deals and discounts, but at the same time it’s convenient to buy online.

If you know your size for the specific kind of shoes you need, simply order them online, or visit your closest sports store to try them and afterwards place your order.

The Takeaway

In short, buying the best football shoes is difficult task as there are different styles and designs. However, getting the perfect comfortable pair of shoes is now much easier and hassle free if you consider these do’s and don’ts.

In-Season Strength Training for Football

Over the course of a football season, players will experience a decline in strength and power without continued strength training. This obviously will affect performance on the field so continuation of the strength program throughout the season is crucial for success.

Ten years ago, in-season weight lifting programs were mostly non-existent at the high school level. Strength training at the college level was done only one to two times a week, and usually after practice. Traditional programs emphasized higher reps with less weight because the players were already exhausted from practice by the time they hit the weight room. With what we know now about periodization and hitting your peak prior to the start of the season, why go back to light weight and high reps?

Many high school and college football programs are now using a system that keeps the weight and intensity level high, and the reps low to maintain strength and power throughout the season. High intensity, lower volume workouts are the best way to maintain what the athletes worked so hard for over the summer. Many schools have added strength training classes during the school day, or athletes have access to the weight room prior to school allowing for training without practice fatigue.

Here is a sample program:

Day 1: (3×4)

Squats

Explosive deadlift with a shrug

Military Press

Day 2: (3×4)

Power Clean

Bench Press

Glute/Ham or RDL (3×8)

Day 3: (3×8)

Power Squat

Power Bench

Core work

This is what a typical in-season program would look like with lower volume because time is limited, but with high intensity for optimum strength and power. If your schedule will allow for a third day of training, use lighter weights but perform the exercises explosively. Note also that this schedule includes mostly compound movements to work multiple muscle groups in a minimal amount of time.

Be sure to alter the program for a week or two during the season to prevent plateaus, and to make the program more exciting for your athletes. For example, weeks three and six use plyometric training or explosive medicine ball drills in place of weight training. Combination lifts are another excellent option. Examples would include a front squat into an overhead press, hang clean into a front squat, and a dumbbell deadlift into a bent row. Be creative during these weeks because any change in the stimulus to the muscles will help prevent plateaus and complacency.

During the season, safety in the weight room also needs to be stressed with the athletes. When lifting with heavier weights and low reps, a spotter is required. Athletes also need to understand the importance of hitting the proper number of repetitions to maintain their strength levels. Using too much weight, relying on the spotter to complete the reps, and using poor technique could all lead to injury. Nor will it produce the desired results.

With more time allotted to strength training during the school day, be sure to take advantage of these advanced training techniques to keep your strength and power levels up throughout the season. You’ll see a difference in your performance especially at the end of the season.

8 Things Football Officials Should Do to Move Up the Officiating Ranks

Many officials, especially younger officials, start officiating football and want to someday make it to a power 5 college conference or the NFL to officiate. However, when they are starting, they are most likely officiating pee-wee or high school football and have many years and promotions until they get a chance to be on a big stage like that. Here are 8 things football officials can do to help move up the officiating ranks.

1. Prepare for everything well.

If you want to move up, you need to show fellow officials you care about what you are doing. If other officials see the work you are putting in, they are more likely to speak highly of you to supervisors, opening up new doors for you.

2. Perform well.

This should be somewhat obvious, but officials need to do their job well. Every football official will make mistakes, but try to make sure you are getting the easy calls. Missing a judgment call is one thing, but missing a simple call is harder for supervisors to look beyond to see your positives.

3. Get to know others and network.

Networking isn’t just for the business world! If you are a football official looking to move up, the more people who know you, and think highly of you, the better. Many officials who have been officiating for longer times may have relationships with supervisors where they will recommend you for a promotion.

4. Get in contact with supervisors.

If you ever want to move up to a higher level of officiating, Supervisors are who will give you that opportunity. Make sure to introduce yourself and try to let them get to know you.

5. Go to clinics.

Not only are clinics great places to learn new skills to help you become a better official, they are also prime networking spots. Use these clinics as places to show your skill and introduce yourself to supervisors in person.

6. Practice and Improve.

Listen to what other officials tell you and what you are learning at clinics. This is how you improve. After you take that new knowledge in, practice it. Then it will come naturally for you on the field.

7. Take as many opportunities as you can.

There are times you may get offered to work a game at a higher level, even on the day of the game. Capitalize on that opportunity and accept it and perform well. This will impress crew mates and supervisors letting them know you are ready for that level of football.

8. Keep track of what you do.

Keep a list of the games you officiate. Sometimes supervisors want to see what you have officiated and it is easiest to give them a list. It also shows you were prepared for this and want to move up.

JT Thomas Inducted Into Minor League Football News Hall of Fame

James «JT» Thomas, former linebacker of the West Virginia Mountaineers, will be inducted into the Minor League Football News Hall of Fame on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Oasis Resort Hotel & Casino in Mesquite, Nevada.

Thomas’ nomination was reviewed by the MLFN’s Board of Directors, and he received notification of his acceptance on July 30.

«It is truly an honor to be receiving this award,» said Thomas. «I owe a big thank you to everyone for supporting me through the years.»

Thomas has used strong leadership skills, tireless work ethic, and passion for the game to become a driving force in the development and promotion of minor league and semi-professional football across the Midwest.

The story of JT Thomas’ football career can be broken into three distinct chapters: player, coach, and executive. Thomas’ collegiate career started at Fort Scott Community College (Kansas) in 1992. Following his sophomore season, Thomas transferred to West Virginia University (WVU).

In two seasons at Fort Scott – both as team captain – Thomas earned two All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference honors at outside linebacker and Defensive Player of the Game in 1992’s Valley of the Sun Bowl. At inside linebacker for WVU, Thomas received two Mountaineer Club Awards for on-field excellence, earned two All-Big East team honors, and won Defensive Player of the Game in the 1994 CarQuest Bowl. He also led both teams in tackles each season.

A successful college career led Thomas to the semi-pro football circuit in 1996 with the Charleston Rockets, where he was able to play with former WVU great Major Harris. Returning to outside linebacker, Thomas led the team in tackles and became a league All-Star as the Rockets finished their 11-game regular season 10-1. Thomas attempted to carry his success from semi-pro ball to the Arena Football League in 1997 with the Albany Firebirds, but sustained a career ending leg injury on the third day of training camp.

Instead of a helmet and pads, the next step of Thomas’ football career featured a headset and clipboard. After a stint as Defensive Coordinator for a championship team of 13-16 year olds, Thomas returned to semi-pro football in 2000 as Head Coach of the West Virginia WHAM! Located in Morgantown, WV, Thomas compiled a .695 winning percentage (41 wins, 18 losses), won three Coach of the Year awards, and coached three league All-Star games in six seasons as WHAM! head coach.

In 2001, Thomas also led the WHAM! to the Mid-Ohio Football League (MOFL) Championship.

During the 2003 season, Thomas took over full ownership of the WHAM! When he stepped off the WHAM! sideline in 2005, he decided to shift his focus full-time towards developing the success of semi-professional football and the WHAM! franchise. In the two years since he has stopped coaching, Thomas has held executive positions within the Ohio Valley Football League and the MOFL. In January of 2007, Thomas was promoted to MOFL Commissioner.

Currently, Thomas oversees the day-to-day operations of the MOFL – an expanding, 10-team semi-pro league across Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. His love for semi-professional football is matched only by his desire to see the MOFL – and every minor league football organization – produce a football product that is competitive, organized, developed, and entertaining for the players in the game and the fans in the stands.

Thomas also serves as a Semi-Professional Sports Consultant with League Level, LLC, a company that provides marketing and promotional strategies for organizations with an emphasis in amateur and semi-professional athletics.

He currently resides in Morgantown, WV, with his wife Rochelle and two children, Jared, 3, and AJ, 10 months. Thomas also has son, JT Thomas III, from a previous relationship.

How Taekwondo Can Help Football and Ice Hockey Players

Team sports are extremely popular worldwide because of their dynamic game play. But few other team sports are as popular as football and ice hockey. To clarify a common source of confusion by ‘football’ I mean soccer, and I am using the world football simply because the entire world excepting the USA refers to soccer as football. Some have called football the king sport because of the fact that it is simple to understand, it’s great fun and people know about it anywhere you go.

Ice hockey also has great popularity in many nations and it would probably be popular worldwide if it was easier to find ice in the hotter regions of the planet. All jokes aside, ice hockey is a serious team sport loved both by players and fans for its exciting style, elaborated tactics and the great skills needed to be a good hockey player.

As a Taekwondo instructor I have worked a lot with football and ice hockey players. The reason why such professional players would choose also to train in martial arts and especially taekwondo is that it helps their performance in their own sport. Taekwondo (TKD) is a famous type of martial arts mostly dominated by fast and explosive kicking techniques. For this reason, taekwondo training will help footwork, quickness and balance all very important both for football and ice hockey players.

The most important thing that a player can get with TKD training is flexibility and that helps prevent injuries especially knee and foot injuries. Feet and knees are essential for football and hockey alike. Both sports demand agility and often strain the athletes causing terrible injuries. Unfortunately it is common for football players and hockey players to suffer accidents during the game which sometimes prevent them from playing long periods losing time, training and money.

Not all the taekwondo styles are equal; my personal opinion is that a school that focuses on the Olympic style of sparring is the best choice for football players because training is focused on using legs, hips and the whole mid section.

If you are thinking of complementing your football or ice hockey training with taekwondo martial arts training the best thing is to find a good taekwondo school and talk with an instructor.

Because different players have different needs you should ask the instructor two basic questions:

1 How will taekwondo training help me?

2 What kind of taekwondo training do you provide?

For any questions or comments about finding good taekwondo schools don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yours,

Markku Parviainen
