Growing Up Together at the Soccer Store

As I have grown older being efficient has become a greater priority to me. While the priority that I do things in a logical order without wasting time is great on paper, having children makes it extremely difficult. Have you ever «helped» your kids get ready for the school year to start in August? How many times did you go to the same stores because they «forgot» they needed pencils, a new backpack, folders, binders, pens, paper, or some other supply. I thought the week leading up to school was the worst. Then came soccer season. The soccer store now welcome’s me personally when I walk in.

Gavin decided to make soccer his first sport at the ripe young age of seven. I grew up on other sports, but it seemed that there was less violence in soccer than football, and keeping a giant metal bat away from kids wasn’t an awful idea either, so the prospect of Saturday mornings at the local pitch seemed pretty good at the start.

When we registered him for our local league at the community center, we were given a list of things to buy at the soccer store. A jersey, some pads, a few items that would help if he wanted to practice on his own, a mouth guard, all of the things you might expect.

It started on our way to his first practice, «dad, I forgot my cleats.» No problem, quick stop back at home, pick them up, and off to practice we’d go. Upon arrival at our home, no cleats where to be found. Off to the soccer store, one pair of cleats please.

On the way home from the first practice we talked about how it went. I was looking for fun, challenging, maybe if I was really lucky tiring. Gavin’s assessment, «Timmy had really cool sweat bands.» Off to the soccer store we went to become proud owners of neon green sweatbands with black stripes

By this point you know where the story is going. Every practice, game, and tournament that followed required a stop for something. Who knew that soccer jersey’s came in so many different «cool» colors?

I never had a problem with any of the equipment that was protective or helped teach the sport. I even enjoyed buying things like whistles, and rulebooks for the time Gavin thought being a referee might be fun.

In a lot of ways, we bonded around that soccer store. As he grew up, sizes increased. We moved from one part of the store to the next. I wish I had taken a picture of my son and I in the mirror the first time we ever strolled into the store. We could have told the story of our lives through that one business.

It was never efficient, either when we «had» to go, or what we «had» to buy, but it was a great place to bond and grow. I have no idea how much money I spent throughout all of the years, but it was worth every penny for the time with my kid and seeing the smile on his face.

Rugby Jerseys Aren’t As "Protective"As They Should Be?

Rugby ranks among the most popular team games in the world today. The raw vitality associated with this particular game makes for a rare attribute as far as sports is concerned. Hardly any other game (including the most popular games like cricket and football) can actually match up to the physical aggression that rugby entails.

A Bit About The Demands Of This Game

One can easily imagine the kind of thought that goes into the manufacturing of the rugby jerseys. Even with all the polyester stitched jerseys around (with little or no grip as against the cotton uniforms), experts believe that the sport is yet to achieve the kind of protective gear it deserves—– of course, given the kind of physicality it involves.

As has already been mentioned above, rugby jerseys are rendered in polyester today. The fabric has immediate benefits. Not only does it facilitate greater mobility on the field but it’s also lightweight and strong at the same time. It’s very easy to maintain polyester as well.

The earlier versions of these uniforms were primarily made of cotton which made it easier for opponents to get a grip and put a halt to your mobility. The modern polyester jerseys are not so easy to get a grip of. Manufacturers today render jerseys in sublimated designs, geared to stay forever (almost) on the base.

There are a few factors that you need to consider while you’re actually in the process of selecting these uniforms. The first thing that coaches usually tend to check is the diversity of the catalog. An experienced sportswear manufacturer should ideally be ready to provide both standard and custom designs. Each and every team – regardless of whether it is playing at the national or international level is ideally driven by different attitudes and outlook – much of which is represented by the team uniform itself. Needless to say, every team is on the lookout for different designs leaving them with a unique identity – on and off the field.

Should Price Be The Only Determinant?

Price is another important factor which is considered as well. You can compare the price brackets online in order to be duly guided in this regard. Besides price, you need to be duly aware of the quality of the products as well. Looking at the online catalogs will not really help you secure an idea about the quality that you would want to access. Please make sure that you are duly enlightening yourself in this regard by seeking recommendations and reading reviews. You should not really go on to settle for choice arbitrarily. Do not really go on to access the products of a company just because they are cheap. The manufacturer should be known for offering high-quality durable rugby uniforms within market-competitive price brackets.

Conducting your research should not really be a problem given the fact that you have the internet at your disposal. There is a world of information out there to be availed. So, avail it in order to make the most of your investment.

The Rolling History of the Soccer Ball

The phrase ‘play ball’ has most probably emerged from our natural instinct to kick at anything we find lying on the ground, be it paper, plastic or a rubber ball. In the olden days, people even kicked heads for fun. The Chinese in the Ts’in and the Dan dynasties invented animal skin balls between 255BC -220 AD, which they dribbled between two poles through gaps in nets. The ancient Egyptians conducted rituals which resembled a football and the Greeks and Romans also played similar games.

Even the South Americans Indians knew the use of a light elasticized ball. During the pre – medieval times, people of an entire village took to kicking a skull into the square of another village, as a favorite past time. The bladder of pigs was inflated and used for playing. Hence the shape and size of the ball depended on the pig’s bladder, so the trajectory of the ball when kicked could not be predicted. This habit of kicking slowly saw the evolution of the first ever rubber ball in 1855, when Charles Goodyear, after patenting vulcanized rubber, made the first ever rubber ball, which now stands displayed at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, NY, USA.

In 1862, H. J. Lindon, invented the first inflatable rubber bladders for balls. The next year, the newly created football association chalked out the rules of the game. By 1872, it was agreed that the ball would be ‘spherical with a circumference of 27 or 28 inches’ and would weigh 13 to 15 oz, which exists even today in the FIFA rule book. In 1937, the weight was increased to 14 to 16 oz. According to the Encyclopedia of Association Football which was first published in 1956, the ball has to be spherical with and outer casing of leather or other approved materials, while the size and weight has remained constant till date.

The founding of the English Football League in 1888 gave a fillip to the mass production of soccer balls, with Mitre and Thomlinson of Glasgow being the first two companies to begin manufacturing. Retaining the shape of the ball was imperative, so good quality leather covers were made from the rump of the cow. The 20th Century brought changes in the design as interlocking panels replaced the large leather sections that met at the north and south of the ball.

The color of the soccer ball in the 1950s used to be orange so as to make it visible while playing on snow. In 1951, the first white ball was played with using floodlights. By 1980s, leather was totally replaced by synthetic material. The present 32 panel soccer ball in white and black is the invention of Richard Buckminster Fuller, consisting of 20 hexagonal and 12 pentagonal surfaces. This soccer ball was first marketed by Select in Denmark in the 1950s and the first official FIFA world cup soccer ball – the Adidas Telstar was used in the World Cup at Mexico in 1970.

Performance Based Contracts For Football Players

Many of us are left with a bitter taste in the aftermath of a jaded world cup campaign, we were promised so much but nothing was delivered. Our taste bitters even further at the fact that each of the players and our manager have come home wrapped comfortably in their oversized paycheques and premiership status.

Something that seems worse than our abysmal performance and the ignorance of our players is the fact that, after aggressive re-negotiations over his contract, Fabio Capello will remain as the England manager for two more years. The contract now states that regardless of performance he will stay in his multi million pound job for the remainder of the contract or until he chooses to resign. Now he can relax, safe with the knowledge that he will not realistically have to deliver anything again before the next tournament and even then expectations won’t be high. In order to expel him from his contract the FA would have to pay out a figure in the region of 12 million pounds as well as the rest of his salary payments for the remainder of his contract.

This raises the question yet again of the ridiculous salaries of today’s footballers and the management staff. They might well be worth the money when they are scoring goals and lifting trophies but otherwise they are undeniably overpaid. Many have argued that the introduction of performance based contracts would act as the best possible incentive to any player or manager as their ‘hard earned’ cash would indeed need to be ‘hard earned’.

Most football players and managers would not go hungry should they miss a couple of paycheques, in fact many would never have an empty fridge due to lucrative endorsements so why not give them a ‘no win no fee’ contract. Although the possibility of no paycheque is not realistic, the clubs could offer a base rate of pay for every team member with an attractive bonus scheme for good performance, this would make sure every player on the pitch gave it their all and those on the bench would train even harder to get the chance to have a shot. A contract could even state that if a player or manager was simply not performing they could face the sack or get sold to another club.

The reality is that today’s football is plagued by a generation of who are more eager to chase gold rather than lift it. Contracts and salaries based on performance would have to be introduced across a whole league rather than one team and even that could see many players jumping ship to warmer shores and deeper pockets.

Marching Band Uniforms for Places With Hot Weather

Many southern states have been experiencing extremely hot summers lately with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees in many places. In order to stay cool in this hot weather when you go outside, it is important to dress cool. However, this can be quite difficult to do if you are a member of the marching band and are required to perform at your school’s football game in your uniform. Marching band uniforms are traditionally very heavy and hot. The good news though, is that there is now a new uniform available for bands that is great for battling these scorching hot temperatures.

Traditionally, these uniforms were always made of a heavy wool fabric. The wool fabric was used because it is a strong fabric that could last for many years. It was also a great fabric to use for color-dying, as it retained a nice bright color. Technology and times have changed now though, and with it many of the standards in the marching band uniforms industry are changing too. Aware of the fact that these uniforms are extremely hot to wear in the summer and early fall months, band uniforms manufacturers have started creating uniforms using 100% woven poly gaberdine fabrics. These fabrics are just as durable as the wool fabrics, but they are not nearly as heavy as them. Uniforms made of this fabric have a 10 year life guarantee through most manufacturers. They also retain color just as well as the wool uniforms and are much less expensive.

For schools that are situated in warm climates, many of the bands would wear alternative uniforms, which generally consisted of pants and a t-shirt for the hotter months, and then switch to their marching band uniforms around the middle of September. Requiring alternative uniforms is a negative for two main reasons. Firstly, it is expensive to have to buy the entire band a second uniform. Secondly, the marching band uniforms are much more eloquent than the alternative uniforms and give your team a better sense of pride as they show off your school’s colors.

So, for schools that are located in warmer climates and are looking to purchase new uniforms for their band, the band directors in charge of ordering the new uniforms should consider buying uniforms made of 100% woven poly gaberdine fabric. They are extremely durable and much lighter weight, and they will surely make the band members much happier and more comfortable during their performances.

Basic Introduction To The Game Of Rugby

Rugby is considered one of the most exciting contact sports today. This is a perfect mixture of the hard-hitting physical nature of football and the speed and movement of soccer.

A rugby ball is somewhat similar to a football in shape and size; however, it is larger. Also, most modern versions have no laces already. In terms of personal equipment, a mouthpiece is mandatory while a soft-padded head gear (scrum cap) is optional.

Be aware that the playing field in this kind of sport is called the «pitch». It is a large grassy surface which is 100m long and 70m wide with uprights on every end. Behind the uprights is the goal area, which must be 10m deep at minimum. Also, this is often 22m in depth.

Players And Their Positions

Two teams will be represented on the pitch, with 15 players each. Each team will be broken into 2 separate groupings – the pack and the backs. The pack (represented by Jersey numbers 1-8) will consists of larger, more physical players while the backs (represented by Jersey numbers 9-15) are composed of the faster players.

The Game’s Objective

To score goals, known as a «try», is the objective of this sport. This can be achieved by touching down the ball inside the opposing team’s end zone. Know that any player can carry the ball and can score. A try is equivalent to 5 points. After which, a conversion kick will be awarded, allowing for a chance to add 2 more score points when successful.

Another way of scoring is through a «drop goal», which is equivalent to 3 points. This happens during play when a player kicks the ball through the uprights of the opposing team. Be reminded though that for a drop goal to be counted, the ball must make contact with the ground prior to being kicked.

Penalty kicks can likewise be granted for several penalties. This is also worth 3 points. This is a free kick from the site of the infraction or behind the 22m line.

Today, there are several professional levels of rugby. In some countries, there are different city teams, which are similar with pro football teams in different states. There is also the international level, which is regarded as the «big show». International teams will be composed of representatives from city teams in different countries. They are often the most watched rugby events these days.

10 University of Georgia Quirks, Facts and Traditions

o «The Arch,» an iron gate found on everything from the UGA logo to t-shirts is representative of the Arch on campus which was an original gateway to the school. Legend has it that if a freshman walks under The Arch during his first year, he will never graduate.

o When the UGA Bulldogs have won a home football game, the school’s Chapel Bell traditionally rings until midnight. Except when Georgia beats Georgia Tech, one of their biggest rivals- then the bell rings the entire night! In the old days, it was the job of freshmen to do the hard work of ringing the bell- today, fans, students, and alumni all take turns.

o During the 2007 Season, the bell was ringing after UGA’s defeat over the University of Florida, when the 877 pound bell fell. It has since been returned to the platform.

o The Bulldogs like to get their opponents ‘Between the Hedges.’ This is a reference to the hedges that grow all the way around the playing field of Sanford Stadium, and dates back to the 30’s, when a sports writer made the reference.

o In 1939, Coach Wally Butts decided silver pants would pair well with red jerseys- thus began the start of the Bulldog’s ‘silver britches.’ Although Coach Vince Dooley changed the pants to white for several years, the silver britches were brought back in 1980, and were worn during the school’s National Championship season.

o UGA has a student ID card and travels in his own dog house- with air conditioning! Because bulldogs are susceptible to heat stroke, he spends football games perched on bags of ice. If opposing teams get to close to his precious ice, he growls ferociously. He’s a tough pup, who wears a jersey with a Varsity letter and a spiked collar.

o The costumed bulldog mascot is called ‘Hairy Dawg.’

o Football players go through the ‘Dog Walk,’ which features players walking through crowds of fans on their way into Stanford Stadium, led by the Redcoat Band.

o Georgia’s original colors included ‘old gold,’ until the intense rivalry between Georgia Tech and Georgia resulted in a skirmish over colors- Georgia students declared yellow an unfit color for the Georgia Bulldogs, deeming it a cowardly color, and yellow was removed- and Crimson (also referred to as ‘Good old Georgia Red) and black have been the official colors ever since.

o College Football was nearly outlawed in 1987, after UGA Quarterback Richard Gammon was injured so severely in a game against the University of Virginia, he died as a result. In those days, players did not wear helmets. Football was immediately disbanded in schools across Georgia, and just as the Georgia Legislature was gearing up to formally outlaw college football, Richard’s mother wrote a letter, published in newspapers, asking the legislature to save football, saying it was her son’s most cherished object.» The ban was defeated, and college football in Georgia survived! Today, visitors to Rome, Georgia, Gammon’s hometown, can stop and pay tribute at the family graves, complete with plaques detailing the sad death and a mother’s great plea to rescue the sport so beloved by her son.

What’s The Significance Of A Varsity Letterman Jacket?

As I began my research of this very important topic «what’s the significance of a varsity letterman jacket.» I was amazed at how many people knew nothing about this prestigious part of our American culture. I will be covering various tidbits of information today dealing with the varsity letterman jacket. I will examine the birth of the letterman jacket as well as the appearance, style, decorations, history, & the traditions of the letterman jacket. The birth of the letterman jacket came with the advent of organized sports which created a need for uniforms. There was an additional need for identifications which was satisfied by the use of emblems or letters. In 1865, the Harvard baseball team added Olde English ‘H’ as their first varsity letter. The ‘H’ was embroidered on the gray flannel shirt. The football team started to use the ‘H’ in 1875. It is interesting to note that for 25 years following the introduction in 1865 of the letter, it was the practice for the team captain to allow certain players who played in the most important games (Yale or Princeton) to keep the ‘H’ jerseys as an award. If a player did not play in an important game, the player had to return the jersey at the end of the season. Awarding the ‘H’ jersey may have been the birth of the varsity letter as an award.

A letterman, in U.S. sports, performing arts or academics, is a high school or college student who has met a specified level of participation and/or performance on a varsity athletic team, marching band, or in other performance school-sponsored activities. The term comes from the practice of awarding each such participant a cloth «letter», which is usually the school’s initial or initials, for placement on a «letter sweater» or «letter jacket» intended for the display of such an award. In some instances, the sweater or jacket itself may also be awarded, especially for the initial award to a given individual.

Traditionally the athletic letter is associated with elite athletes, though in the last few decades there has been movement to make the letter award more accessible to all students by removing performance requirements. In the case of a marching band, drumline, or colorguard member, usually a letterman is awarded to an upperclassmen or section leader. Today, in order to distinguish «lettermen» from other team participants, schools often establish a minimum level of participation in a team’s events and/or a minimum level of performance in order for a letter to be awarded. A common threshold in American football and basketball is participation in a set level, often half, of all quarters in a season. (To meet this standard in a ten game season, one would have to have participated in at least twenty of the forty quarters played.)

In individual sports such as tennis and golf, the threshold for lettering is generally participation in one half or sometimes two-thirds of all matches contested. Frequently, other members of the team who fail to meet requirements for a letter are awarded a certificate of participation or other award considered to be of lesser value than a letter. Some schools continue to base the awarding of letters according to performance, in team sports requiring a certain number of scores, steals, baskets or tackles, according to position and sport. In individual sports letters are often determined according to qualification for state meets or tournaments. In the performing arts letters are awarded according to performance. Students who are selected for state choir or receive high scores at major instrumental competition may receive letters, or musicians who achieve first or second seat in their instrumental section. Students participating in academic clubs can also be given this award if the requirements are met, which academic clubs this award can be given to is at the discretion of the school. In some schools general «academic letters» are awarded on the basis of GPA, usually students with a GPA at or above 3.8.This term is not gender-specific; a qualifying participant in women’s basketball or other women’s sports is properly referred to as a letterman, as would be a qualifying female participant on a co-educational sports team.

A letterman jacket is a jacket traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United States to represent school and team pride as well as to display personal awards earned in athletics, academics or activities. Letterman jackets are also known as «Varsity Jackets» in some places. The body (i.e., torso) is usually of boiled wool and the sleeves of leather with banded wrists and waistband. Letter jackets are usually produced in the school colors with the body of the jacket in the school’s primary color and sleeves in the secondary color. They usually feature a banded collar for men or a hood for women. The letter jacket derives its name from the varsity letter chenille patch on its left breast, which is almost always the first letter or initials of the high school or college the jacket came from. Because the jacket is meant as a display for the letter award the jacket’s colors match those of the letter, rather than the other way around. The name of the owner usually appears either in chenille (matching the letter) or is embroidered on the jacket itself. The owner’s graduation year usually appears in matching chenille, Placement of the name and year of graduation depends on school tradition. The year is most often sewn on the right sleeve or just above the right pocket. Lettermen who play on a championship team often receive a large patch commemorating their championship that is worn on the back of the jacket.

The letterman sweater was first regularly used by the 1891 «Nine» (baseball) and was black with a small Crimson ‘H’ on the left breast. Letter sweaters were a predecessor to letter jackets. The letter was usually quite large and centered (if the sweater was a pullover); stripes on one sleeve designated the number of letters won, with a star indicating a team captain. Letterman jackets are almost never purchased before a student has earned a letter. In schools where only varsity letters are awarded this is usually in a students’ junior or senior year. In schools where junior varsity letters are awarded, the jacket may also be purchased by junior varsity letter recipients, though the letter is placed just above the left pocket, leaving space for a (hopefully) future varsity letter.

Some schools may award letterman jackets to letter winners at the award ceremony, but more often the school only provides the letter.

In America and Canada a male athlete might give his girlfriend the letter as a token of his love, this is considered a sign of a truly intimate relationship as the Jacket is an honor. In the event of a breakup it is customary for the girl to return the jacket as a sign of rejection.

Rugby League Shirts – Their History and Design

Rugby League Shirts have changed greatly since the sport was first introduced in 1895. In the past full sleeve shirts were worn made of cotton which became very heavy when wet and were traditionally designed with a v shape or printing on them to distinguish them from their Rugby Union counterparts.

Today Rugby League Shirts are made of synthetic materials such as polyester. This makes them far lighter, and less absorbent meaning they will not become heavy when wet. Rugby League shirts today are also very tight fitting and slippery due to their synthetic material. This is to make them less easy to grab making it easier for players to break tackles.

Rugby League is often considered to be more of a working class sport. Played in over 30 countries it is only played professionally in the UK, France, Australia and New Zealand. This is somewhat ironic as although other countries have the sport at a semi-professional level the sport is routed in it’s allowance of the professional game.

After the first divergence of football codes the Rugby Football Union was formed. This organization had a very strong amateur policy not allowing players to be compensated for time off work while playing or training and also disallowing entrance fees to matches being charged.

This lead to the Northern Rugby Football Union being formed as many of the teams in the North were made up of working class people who couldn’t afford to take time off of work to play. Later the Northern Rugby Football League was formed with play rules being a modification of the Northern Rugby Football League’s.

In summary the Rugby League shirts of today are as different to their historical counterparts as the game is.
