How to Write a Football Match Report

One of the functions of a center referee after the end of any game of football is the writing of the match report. This is a document that is so important to both the football authority and the referee association, because of its importance. The ability to write a good and accurate report is the hallmarks of a competent match official.

What constitutes a standard match report?

Time of kick-off

The actual time of kick-off must be clearly stated including the duration of the match. Extra time given at the end of each halves including the date of the match must also be included in the match report.

Name of both teams

Football is usually played between two teams with their own sets of players and officials. The match report usually contains the name of both the home team and the away team. The name of the home team usually comes first.

Name of venue of match

The name of the venue where the game was played must be written in the report. Matches are usually played in stadium except in cases where other facilities like school fields and training pitches of hotels and organizations are used. In any case, the name of the venue is very essential. The behavior of the fans and officials at the match venues is also included in the write-up.

Name and position of match officials

There are usually four match officials in a standard game of football. They include- the center referee, the assistant referee 1, the assistant referee 2 and the fourth official. Each of these officials has a column where their names, association, designation and signature are appended. The name of the match commissioner must be inserted in your write-up.

Substitutions, cautions and sending off

All substitutions made by both teams must be recorded on the match report. Cautions and sending off issued to either team must also be recorded. Remember to state clearly the offense committed by the player for which he was cautioned or sent off as listed in the Laws of the game.

The difference between the later and the former lies in the recording of the incident that led to the caution and sending off issued out. In documenting these incidents, consultations are made with the other match officials to ensure that reports are as accurate as possible.

Weather condition and condition of pitch

Climatic conditions can result to the cancellation of a match especially when the weather is inclement. A vivid description of the condition of the pitch and the weather condition must be included in the report.

Goals scored

The number of goals scored and the name and jersey numbers of the player who scored the goal must be well-documented. The final score between both teams and the eventual winner will also be included in the write-up.

The full report is usually submitted to the football authority responsible for organizing the game either through post or email. The standard duration for submitting such write-up is usually 48 hours after the match. It is important to note that all incidents that occurred outside the field of play must also be recorded, especially in the event of intimidation by team officials against match officials. At the end of the report, your name, referee association and signature must be appended to the report.

How to Catch a Football As a Wide Receiver

The most important skill for wide receivers to possess aside from confidence is knowing how to catch a football. Don’t not be mistaken, catching a football is not as easy as it may seem. If it were, there would be less defensive backs out there in the world of football – trust me.

Imagine, a bullet pass being thrown to you by Michael Vick at just a few yards out; Something «simple» suddenly becomes a bit more challenging and requires ample focus. If you aim to be an electrifying wide receivers with the ability to snag any ball out of the air on command, here are the fundamentals to catching a football you must first learn:

  1. Hand eye coordination
  2. Hand strength
  3. Focus
  4. Proper hand placement
  5. Tuck the ball in and protect it

Hand eye coordination is the foundation to learning how to catch a football and is simply the coordinated control of eye movement with hand movement, and the processing of visual input to guide reaching and grasping. In this case we’re working on hand eye coordination to reach and successfully catch a football. The better a wide receiver is at looking-in the football with hand eye coordination, the better their chances are to catch a football thrown to them.

Improving your hand eye coordination isn’t a complex task to conquer, but it does require ample focus which is the second key component to catching footballs. As we look back at the example of the bullet pass being thrown to you from a few yards out by Michael Vick, you should consider how focus will allow you to control your body and mind to focus on the football and see it into your hands. Your objective as a top wide receiver is to focus and lock your eyes on the football, take a deep breath and see the football into your hands. This step should be a constant with every ball thrown your way. Keep in mind you don’t want to attack the football. You want to absorb the football into your hands and away from your body followed by a tight squeeze, which leads me to the next important aspect of a wide receivers ability to catch a football; hand strength.

In organized football the velocity on the ball is much more intense than it would be as you play catch with friends. Moreover, defenses are much more aggressive. In order to compensate for this, you need strong hands. This can be the difference between catching a football to make an important completion and not. You won’t always be wide open on a route and you’ll rarely ever have a ball thrown to you half speed so you need to be prepared to squeeze the football after any and all passes you catch. This will increase your stats and avoid big drops when a defender lays a hit on you or swipes at your arms and hands after a catch.

Proper hand placement is another important factor in knowing how to catch a football. Luckily this is one of the easiest aspects to adapt to due to natural limb positioning. When a football is thrown directly at you at or above your chest, you want to form your hands into a diamond. When a ball is thrown directly at you anywhere below your chest, you want to position your hands with your thumbs facing up and your fingers angled low towards the ground. Another important hand positioning for a wide receiver where you’ll make the big game changing catches is when you’re catching the deep ball.

You’ll definitely want to incorporate every aspect of how to catch a football when the deep ball is thrown. When a deep ball is thrown over your shoulders you want to position your hands with your fingers spread wide open and the tips of your pinky-fingers overlapping. For the best grip on the ball when catching, aim to grab the end of the ball before the laces. This type of catch requires, strong hands, focus, and proper hand positioning even more so. Big plays equal big focus.

The last key to successfully catching a football is to tuck the football and protect it. After you have completed the steps mentioned above, the final step is to reel in the football and protect it. You don’t want to take all of the proper steps and forget this one. This step is the difference between a thirty yard gain and a fumble. So ALWAYS, always, always, tuck and protect the football after every football catch.

To get you started at improving your football catching ability, I’ve listed a couple good exercises for hand eye coordination and hand strength below. Once you have mastered all of the key components mentioned above, you are sure to be on your way to being a top wide receiver.

Tennis Ball Drill For Hand Eye Coordination:

With a tennis ball you can do several wide receiver drills to improve your hand eye coordination as a wide receiver. This is a great drill that has helped me improve my hand eye coordination substantially.

For beginners, lightly bounce the ball on the ground. As the ball bounces up, look the ball into your hands and squeeze it. Make sure to focus on the ball all the way from its decent to its rise into your hands. Make sure to practice this drill with both hands. One you’ve gotten the hang of this exercise, increase the level of difficulty by bounce the ball harder and at different angles. Also, try throwing the ball off of a wall, challenging yourself to catch the ball at different points in the air and before it hits the ground all while focusing on the ball from the time of your release all the way back into your hands. After successfully mastering this drill alone, I’m certain that you will have more than 80% of what it takes to know how to catch a football.

Tennis Ball Drill For Hand Strength:

The Tennis Ball Squeeze – Using a tennis ball, simply squeeze and hold for up to 90-seconds. Train both hands with three sets each. This movement heavily targets the forearms. This drill is important because after you catch a football you will be squeezing it so it doesn’t get away from you.

A Medaieval Football match

Ever thought of football as an extreme sport?

Welcome to the world of Royal Ashbourne Shrovetide Football (Shrovetide)!

I was introduced to Shrovetide when I met my then-to-be husband, a determined Shrovetider, and asked him how he’d broken his nose!

Shrovetide football is played in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England, on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday every year, as it has done annually from at least the 12th Century (not even the world wars stopped play.)

Both the inventors of Rugby, and Association football, had strong Ashbourne, and Shrovetide connections.

The goal posts are 3 miles apart, there is no pitch, just the streets of the town, the surrounding fields, and of course, the river Henmore, which is perhaps the most important area of play. This is because the goal posts are at the site of the old mill wheels of the two mediaeval water mills, upstream and downstream from the town, respectively.

The ball (brightly painted leather, about the size of a medicine ball) is ritually thrown to the mob (known as «The Hug») at 2 p.m. each day, and is then fought over by two teams, the «Uppards», who try to score it at the upstream goal, and «Downards», who try to score it at the downstream goal, until 10 p.m.

As the ball is made of leather, with a stuffing of sawdust, as it gets wetter, it gets heavier. It also swells. Thus, by the time it has reached one or other of the goals, most of its paint has been rubbed off, and it is a sorry sight as it is victoriously carried aloft back to The Green Man, to mark the end of play.

(If the ball is goaled before 5 p.m., a second ball is turned up, but normally the ball is not goaled until well after 5 p.m., if at all.)

Loyalties are decided by birth, if you’re born upstream, or from an upstream family you’re an Uppard, and vice versa. (This differs from most ball games, in that the aim is to score an «own goal»)

There is no limit to the number of players on each side, and very few rules, so the game is very rough and tumble. It is all played in good humour, so deaths are infrequent, but it is a great spectacle to watch.

As the field of play is the whole town, spectators get caught up in events, but it’s quite safe – there are refuges in enclosed areas to ensure only players have any chance of injury.

It can be quite disconcerting, however, to see 4 to 5 hundred men in rags and hobnail boots rampaging towards you!

The river banks form a fantastic viewing platform for watching river play, and cheers go up from the crowd whenever the ball is seen.

It can be cold, but luckily Ashbourne has many historic pubs, cafes and restaurants to get you warm, and the pubs open each day before the game starts, and do not shut until well after the game finishes.

The locals are very welcoming, and someone in the crowd will always explain the finer points of play, as they’re intensely proud of their unique heritage.

Colt McCoy & Jordan Shipley University of Texas (UT) Football Teammates, Roommates, & Family Friends

Colt McCoy is best known for his success at playing the quarterback position for the University of Texas (UT) Longhorns based in Austin, Texas. In fact, his success as a college passer was so prolific that he attained benchmarks never before accomplished by anyone including setting the all-time record for most wins by a quarterback with a grand total of 45 over a four year career.

Chief amongst the numerous reasons for the success Colt experienced are his father Brad McCoy who played at UT in his youth and coached Colt in high school and Jordan Shipley who in addition to being a good friend and former roommate to Colt was also his favorite receiver during the four years that the two played together in college. Interestingly there is a link between Brad McCoy and Jordan Shipley that circumvents Colt altogether.

Jordan Shipley has a father named Bob Shipley who served as the high school football coach for his son, the record breaking wide receiver from a small town in central Texas with a population of 1,600 people. Bob Shipley played football at the University of Texas when he was a younger man and during that time he was teammates, friends, and even roommates with Brad McCoy, the man who would eventually become the father of Colt McCoy.

Jordan Shipley and Colt McCoy were born less than a year apart in the mid-1980s and grew up in tiny central Texas cities that are located about an hour and a half apart on opposite sides of the small Texas city of Abilene. Jordan was raised in Rotan, TX (population 1,611) while Colt grew up in Tuscola, TX (population 714) 80 miles south of Rotan.

Interestingly both Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley had fathers that served as their high school football coaches at their respective schools and the two standout players played complimentary offensive positions with Colt being a quarterback and Shipley a wide receiver. Both players went onto become nationally renowned football stars while playing college football together in Austin, Texas which is only a bit more than 200 miles south of where the two boys grew up.

The relationship that Bob Shipley and Brad McCoy formed decades earlier came full circle when their two boys followed in their footsteps and became not only contributing players to the University of Texas Longhorns football program but more importantly good friends. The bond between the McCoy and Shipley families is a unique one that is filled with shared experiences that will likely continue for lifetimes and possibly into future generations.

The History of World Cup Football

The FIFA World Cup (often called the Football World Cup or simply the World Cup) is the most important competition in international football (soccer), and the world’s most representative team sport event. Organised by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s governing body, the World Cup is contested by the men’s national football teams of FIFA member nations. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II), however it is more of an ongoing event as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years preceding the final rounds. The final tournament phase (often called the «Finals») involves 32 national teams competing over a four-week period in a previously nominated host nation, with these games making it the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.[1] In the 17 tournaments held, only seven nations have ever won the World Cup Finals. Brazil are the current holders, as well as the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times, while Germany and Italy follow with three titles each. The next football World Cup Finals will be held in Germany.

The first international football match was played in 1872 between England and Scotland, although at this stage the sport was rarely played outside Great Britain. As football began to increase in popularity, it was held as a demonstration sport (with no medals awarded) at the 1900, 1904 and 1906 Summer Olympics before football became an official competition at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Organised by England’s Football Association, the event was for amateur players only and was regarded suspiciously as a show rather than a competition. The England national amateur football team won the event in both 1908 and 1912.

With the Olympic event continuing to be contested only between amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organised the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The competition is often described as The First World Cup,and featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. The first tournament was won by West Auckland, an amateur side from north-east England that was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the competition. West Auckland returned in 1911 to successfully defend their title, and were given the trophy to keep forever, as per the rules of the competition.

In 1914, FIFA agreed to recognise the Olympic tournament as a «world football championship for amateurs», and took responsibility for organising the event. This led the way for the world’s first intercontinental football competition, at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament, before winning the gold medal again in 1928, with another South American team, Argentina, taking silver. In 1928 FIFA made the decision to stage their own international tournament. With Uruguay now two-time official football world champions and due to celebrate their centenary of independence in 1930, FIFA named Uruguay as the host country.

The 1932 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, did not plan to include football as part of the programme due to the low popularity of football in the United States. FIFA and the IOC also disagreed over the status of amateur players, and so football was dropped from the Games.FIFA president Jules Rimet thus set about organising the inaugural World Cup tournament to be held in Uruguay in 1930. The national associations of selected nations were invited to send a team, but the choice of Uruguay as a venue for the competition meant a long and costly trip across the Atlantic Ocean for European sides. Indeed, no European country pledged to send a team until two months before the start of the competition.Rimet eventually persuaded teams from Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia to make the trip. In total 13 nations took part — seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America.

A spin-off tournament, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, was first held in 1991. It is similar to the men’s tournament in format, but so far has not generated the same level of interest.

How to Win At Table Football – A Beginners Guide

Table football may be considered by some to be a fun gimmick, however many players play the game in a very competitive nature. This article will attempt to provide you with some tips and information in order to beat your mates and become king of table football. Generally there are three simple rules to follow in order to have success; finesse, positioning, and control. Understanding these three skill areas will hopefully lead to you beating your mates on a regular basis.

First of all when it comes to table football many people make the mistake of trying to hit the ball as hard as possible, with no regard for direction and finesse. This is a common mistake among players, and you can see dramatic improvements in your play by simply taking your time and picking out the shots to take. Aim your shots on goal by positioning the ball to either side of the striking player when shooting. Try to find gaps in the opposition’s defence line and then exploit them to create goal scoring chances.

The second skill to focus on is the positioning of your own players. This has an increasing importance on the defensive side of the game. Try to align your players to match the opposition’s player position, this will allow you to get good blocks in and hit them on the counter attack. When defending its vital to always have control of the midfield and the goalkeeper rather than your attacking players. This is so you can adjust quickly and clear the ball up the pitch to your attackers to create chances for yourself.

The third area to spend time practising is that of ball control. Being able to keep control of the ball and work shooting opportunities often makes the difference between winning and losing the game. Side passes provide an excellent chance to switch the ball quickly from the flank to the centre and get a potentially lethal shot on goal with.

Practice these three key skill areas and you’ll be beating your mates in no time, it really is as simple as that!
